The Miscellaneous Thought Thread

I found this one much better than previous versions. You should give it a try.

It may have helped that I watched in the comfort of my home, with subtitles. And I'd refreshed myself with Cliff Notes. And that I have a friend who's an avid fan who could explain any questions I had.

ETA I believe I last read it in the '70s. In discussions we did decide that if you don't know the books you will be lost but if you do you will appreciate what was included.

Okay. I need to stay in my home, activate the subtitles, purchase a copy of the Cliff Notes to keep on my cocktail table throughout, and make a new and as yet unknown friend who is a subject matter expert on the literature and film versions. Check. :D

Maybe it's best if I just keep my memories of Dune to sitting in a theater very confused 40 years ago, but at least with a cute date?

Just got out of seeing Dial of Destiny. Woah, that was terrible. Newfound appreciation for Crystal Skull.

Even at his worst, Spielberg is the master. The opening scene of Crystal Skull, with the teenagers racing the soldiers, is more dynamic than any action sequence in Dial of Destiny. And Crystal Skull is mostly a really sloppy, unnecessary film.

All I could think watching Dial of Destiny was how sad and depressing it was, then comparing it to how respectable and fun Crystal Skull is by comparison.

I'm conflicted, but I need to make a decision and hit "Add To Cart" and "Proceed To Checkout" soon before they are all sold out.

Do I go with this version of Rollerblade Ken for Halloween?

Or should I go with my first instinct and do Cowboy Ken for Halloween? Remembering, of course, that I have aged out of the Ken role by many decades. Which only makes it funnier for either one. 🤣

Or... Do I humiliate my entire living family and pay for fast shipping so I can show up at the theater to see Barbie wearing Cowboy Ken?

Either way, I'm just Ken. 🙄

I love your Ken-rgy! You absolutely must get the rollerblade costume to wear to the film showing and then the cowboy outfit for Halloween.

Here's a link for Succession x Barbie fans

Dune is the easy book to understand. Wait until they make Dune Messiah and Children of Dune where it starts to get really confusing. By God Emperor of Dune, you have Jabba the Hutt ruling the Universe.

Wait, you're not prepping for "Barbie"?

Theater!

Part of me really wants to be at the screening that your family attends. But another part of me is wary of Greta Gerwig. I may be the only person who actively disliked "Lady Bird."

I honestly don't know if I have the guts to go through with it in public (sober), but I can't wait to come out into the living room dressed as Ken as the family begins to collect purses/phones and moves to the car to head to the theater. For a $40 cheapo polyester costume, it will at least be a thousand dollar laugh. 🤣

I have no idea who Greta Gerwig is, so I'm going in blind. But then, as you and I spoke about weeks ago now, the moment I saw the first Barbie trailer after hearing neighbor kids talk about it at a barbecue a month ago, I was instantly 110% in on this movie. No going back.

Just because, why not, I am very excited for them to get to work on this redevelopment of the current ampitheatre. Really giving Vancouver a unique, and beautiful new venue.

Oh, thank you, but I got that from the trailers with her name lit up in that fabulous Barbie font.

I just don't know her background personally. Is she "problematic", as the kids now say very seriously? 🤣
No, but a few film people I follow have had strong reactions against her previous work for whatever reason.

Nothing I've seen or read to indicate that it's anything more than personal taste.

Her two most significant works have been Lady Bird and Little Women, both stories about girls coming of age. Can’t say I loved Lady Bird, but Little Women I enjoyed despite a few lines of awkward dialogue.
