HERMIT CRABS!

You should have seen how proud I looked just now when I finally remembered what they were called.

Isn't that Marcel guy a Hermit Crab wearing shoes? Or is it literally just a small empty shell with shoes sticking out and nothing inside?
Its an empty shell with shoes stuck on, nothing more. No animal inside the shell, nothing.

In honor of the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi they need to announce the Endor Speeder Bike coaster is coming to DLR. Something to compete with Hagrids.
There is a rumor that Return of the Jedi will be re-released to theaters April 28th. I'd like to see it again on the big screen. My son and I had a great time watching The Empire Strikes Back in an empty theater during Covid.

Nice!! I’ll be taking my son to see it if true.

I’ve never really understood what they were going for with the ghost host’s spiel about how “this chamber has no windows and no doors.” Like dude there’s obviously a door, how else did I get in?

You know, when I was little... Like toddler aged... I remember looking around seeing there's no doors and being a bit disturbed.

As an adult it's neat how they conceal the door, and honestly if someone isn't paying attention to where they came in it could be disorienting.

Well after it closes it disappeared and doesn’t exist anymore That’s what I think is happening subconsciously and why people never really question it.

I guess that makes sense story-wise… of course every theme park attraction takes some imagination to enjoy, but that one’s just a little over the top for me I guess. @SuddenStorm I wonder how I felt about that when I was little, but my memory of back then kinda sucks.

Also when the room starts stretching technically there isn’t a door anymore right? And at the point in the story you don’t know there will be another one.

Yeah technically that is true (for Disneyland only). I just always thought the whole thing was so corny. “There’s no doors” and then oop actually there’s another one! I guess that’s the charm of it.

Definitely gets a pass at DL. Not so much at WDW. Although we’re not supposed to know the walls are going up vs the elevator going down. That’s not part of the story.

There are no obvious doors when the line is said. It sets up the "chilling challenge...to find your way out!"

Both WDW and DL have multiple doors in their stretching rooms (one you enter through and one you exit through), so I'm unsure why it's being said that either one does or doesn't have multiple doors, or that one way is ok but the other is not?

Is Crump the guy who was responsible for Mansion's more ghoulish and gruesome aspects?

It depends. He was responsible for some of the more zany elements- many of Davis's early concepts were more gruesome.

Of course, Haunted Mansion's development is often simplified among Disney fan circles as It started as a walkthrough with a museum of the weird at the end, then Walt died, and it became an omnimover and since Walt wasn't there to play peacekeepr different factions developed in WED with Coates taking over one half of the attraction (the first) and Davis taking over the second more character driven half, with some of Rolly's concepts scattered throughout.

This is a vast oversimplification of the ride's development and not entirely accurate. Ken Anderson played a huge role in the first run of the attraction's story (which was revised multiple times prior to the ride's open), and Crump and Gracey spent some time developing concepts and illusions. Not to mention the vast amount of external influences that WED pulled from- so many of the gags and visuals have a rich backstory and with the wide amount of concept art that's been made available, it's often possible to see how the ride progressed creatively.

Check out this blog for more on the Mansion's development- https://longforgottenhauntedmansion.blogspot.com/

Of course, it's also fascinating to learn just how versed the first generation of WDI/WED was in the arts and pop culture in general. It's a stark contrast to the WDI that exists today. And it's why we will never get a ride with the sheer depth of the Mansion, and Pirates, again.

Here's one Long Forgotten post on some of Crump's influence on the final product- https://longforgottenhauntedmansion.blogspot.com/2011/07/weirder-haunted-mansion.html

The house itself is haunted and changes its form. You entered this room, it’s now distorting itself by stretching and the door is gone too. The house just Cask of Amontillado’ed you.
