The Miscellaneous Thought Thread

The development I'm moving to in Utah already has a complete set of SoCal expats welcoming me with open arms. 🤣

Super off topic but this is the misc thought thread so who cares-

While walking through a neighborhood in Utah County a few weeks ago I noticed a car with a bumper sticker that says 'Utah Sucks! Don't Move here!"

It's associated with this satirical website- https://www.utahsucksdontmovehere.com/

The sentiment that too many Californians are moving to the state is shared among many of the older generation.

I can think of a dozen family friends from Southern California who have left in the last 7 years- many of whom to Utah. Heck, my parents are scoping out properties out here to rent and eventually retire in.

But there's some amazing communities being built in Daybreak, Eagle Mountain, and some other areas so who can blame them?

I love that!

Good news is that the vast majority of Californians evacuating the state now and in the past few years are of the basic same mindset of the new states they are moving to. While the property values might go up in those states, the vast majority of California evacuee's will be fine neighbors in their new states. Which is why they are there in the first place.

No one can blame them. It's a process. You have to start it by simply thinking about leaving. Then you do some research. Then you talk to your tax man. Then you open a bottle of Malbec and spend way too much time on Zillow.com...

Then you sell your house fast for a ridiculous amount and you leave.

We're having a fabulous SoCal summer. It's been cooler than normal all over California this summer,

I was thinking the same thing recently except for those really nasty couple weeks towards the end of June/ early July. Here in the valley at least.

I just hope you're prepared for Utah's far more stringent alcohol laws!

Trust me, I researched. 🤣 And things have apparently changed since The Donny & Marie Show went off the air.

Since my days of leaving the Disco at Last Call (and always being amongst the first to leave the dancefloor) and moving on to the underground nightclub have long since ended, I'm going to be fine.

For Chrissakes, look at that post I just made below. I'm so old I'm now talking about the weather!

Here in coastal San Diego, we're still getting clammy June Gloom every morning here in late July.

That said, I'm sure in September it will be 104 with 8% humidity and gusty winds, so I should just shut up. 🧐

My friend got maybe two hours into our first day before declaring DL superior to WDW.

For someone who goes to Disneyland 25x a year and is planning a $10,000 Disney World trip this statement is a bit concerning and gives me cold feet. Not that I needed much outside help. I'm noticing a pattern here...

I get an itch to go to WDW > Start planning WDW trip > Hit a wall during planning trying to get everything to align> Realize that for our party with young kids + everything we're trying to accomplish it needs to be a long trip at Moderate to Deluxe Hotels> Realize that the way we want/need to do WDW will cost a lot of $$$ > start comparing to other vacations you can do for 10k

I mean for 10k I can go to Italy for two weeks. We have a lot of family in Sicily and I've been dreaming of the Mediterranean Sea and the street food in Palermo since the last time I was there in 2001.

So yeah it kind of makes me want to scale back the WDW trip or just go to Italy. Lol. Think my soul could use that before being stressed out and exhausted just to be able to compare different versions of POTC. Hahah

For the first two decades of the 21st century, if it weren't for Epcot Center, or whatever fumes it was still coasting on during that time, I wouldn't have thought about going back to WDW. But it was always Epcot that caused me to pull the trigger.

No longer. Whatever remains of 20th century Epcot is weak and watered down. What replaced the removed parts of 20th century Epcot or has been added to it is vapid and underwhelming. Or just tacky.

I may never return to WDW again in my lifetime at this point, and I will focus on Tokyo Disneyland instead. And I'm pretty darn sure I'm going to be okay with that. 🧐

I hear you. If I didn’t live “down the street” from Disneyland and we were some family from the Mid West, I probably would have pulled the trigger a while ago. We don’t travel out of state/ internationally that much so it gets hard to justify the price tag for a proper WDW trip. Especially for someone who visits Disneyland 2x a month +. With that said, I currently have rooms booked at WDW for next March. We’ll see. March is far away and they don’t need the balance until January. Haha

I’ve come to the realization that I don’t want a WDW “vacation.” I want to Solo rip (or preferably with one adult) all the best rides at WDW and Universal. Of course I say that now. I would inevitably feel like a jack@$$ when I’m next in line to ride Frozen Ever After while my 2 year old daughter is at home. Lol

Since your trip is already booked, I say just stick with it, and I’m saying that as someone who just came back from WDW property a few months ago and have no immediate desire to return, and as someone who spent a month in Italy a few years ago and wished I was there every single day. Complete the trip, and who knows? You may actually really, really enjoy yourselves and find the trip to be worth the money. You won’t know unless you try.

@PiratesMansion what did you think of ROTR?
I absolutely loved it!

Everything for at least the last decade has branded itself as "immersive" and ROTR is the ONLY ride built recently where that feels like it genuinely applies. My jaw was on the floor from "revolving room" onward. It's the first attraction in a long time anywhere to truly wow me.

And I'm NOT a Star Wars fan. I haven't seen a minute of the Disney Star Wars movies. I had done Smugglers Run and left very underwhelmed. But Rise was so good it got me out of my morning funk almost singlehandedly. The imagineers can still knock it out of the park when they want to.

My one concern is that I thought both GE attractions had some redundancy with Star Tours.

In non-Star Wars news, I was very unimpressed with Webslingers. Why are we building worse versions of rides that already exist in the same park?

In terms of Italy I think the kids would come to appreciate Italy more if you go later. Honestly with the age your kids are you are probably making the right choice. Keep in mind once they’re teenagers they can partake in Vino in Tuscany or really appreciate the art in Florence or historic sites in Rome and you can take them on a full tour starting with Sicily and then up the coast from Naples.

While I haven’t been to WDW in some time from what I recall there are some things the family will likely enjoy, including Epcot which was the highlight of my trip. But if you really aren’t sold on WDW and are traveling with the family while looking for that “touch of Disney”, Aulani is great if you still want to fly somewhere and partake on a Hawaiian vacation. Plus you’ll still have the other excursions on Oahu like the Waikiki, Polynesian cultural center, Pearl Harbor, etc.

To put things in context, she has been to WDW two different times, both recent-ish but several years apart. She's very 'general public' when it comes to Disney.

Here's the thing with WDW: the trip where everything aligns simply will never happen unless Disney suddenly decides to drop a lot of its policies/requirements. Is it overpriced and overcomplicated? Absolutely! But I get the feeling that you're going to be curious about WDW until you go and experience it yourself, and since you're booked you may as well make this your time. It won't be perfect, but you'll get at least a sample of it. From there you can decide if you'd like to come back and hit the things you missed or if you're better off going to Italy instead.

I'd 100% go to Italy before WDW, especially since you go to Disneyland so often. But also, it might be worth hitting WDW sooner than later since the place will probably be very different in a decade- like Disneyland.

I was planning a big 50th WDW trip after Tron opened. Stay on property and really go all out. An opportunity came to go on Oct 1st and 2nd of last year on the true 50th and I took it. Reservations for the MK weren't available so we went to Epcot and AK. I had a great time but the lackluster approach to the 50th made me rethink my original planned trip and I'm not sure when I'll go back.

Remember how some people would complain that Fastpass at Disneyland was badly designed because they were set up to rush you through the themed parts of the queue?

Well those people had some good points, but they were also wrong.

Waiting through those Space Mountain hallways that you used to breeze through before they reconfigured the line isn't fun.
