I don't blame US visitors for their behavior. Disney themselves started this by having dedicated character meeting lines and locations. It changed the whole dynamic of how guests view characters.

Valid point. They over-manage many characters with dedicated queues, and then they'll just release some of them into the wild and demand that we interact with them naturally as they run around.

Pick one of those options and stick with it, but don't expect your customers to know which character is appearing in which format.

Now that I think about it, can any member on this site pinpoint which year Disney begun the "Meeting Characters in Line" at the Disney Theme Parks? I swear there was a period when both used to coexist without any guards. I'm going to speculate sometime in the mid to late 1990s.

So far the only Disney Characters that are still allowed to wander around the park (at least for Disneyland pre-pandemic at Fantasyland and Main Street) was The Mad Hatter, Alice, The Queen of Hearts, Peter Pan, Wendy, Pinocchio, and Geppetto (to a lesser degree Mary Poppins, Bert, Aladdin, and Jasmine. But that's only on special occasions).

My favorite is this video with the old Disneyland Band featuring The Hatter, Alice, and Queen of Hearts not only joining in. But marched and performed on the Carousel in Fantasyland.

The waterskiing videos for those curious.

I believe WDW started phasing this out sometime in the 1990s. Around the same period Disney retried Disney Characters (notably Pinocchio, Smee, and Goofy) water skiing across Seven Seas Lagoon which entertained guests on Fairy Boats heading to the Magic Kingdom. Especially since those occurrences happened at random (since they happened at certain parts of the day).

Mickey’s Birthdayland had a dedicated Mickey Mouse meet and greet.

Reminds me of the story Jim Hill discussed in an older episode of The Disney Dish Podcast (or an older article from Jil Hill Media) years back where he discussed Mickey's Birthdayland/Mickey's Startland/Mickey's ToonTown Fair. It's been a while, but I remember he mentioned that one of the reasons that Birthdayland was created was because a lot of park guests wouldn't stop asking the Cast Members where to meet Mickey Mouse. Since Mickey used to appear randomly at Magic Kingdom and used to mainly hang around the park entrance and inside Main Street.

Pre-pandemic I've seen Honest John, Gideon, Belle, and the Beast all free roam around Fantasyland. Coincidentally both pairs (on different visits) decided to go on the carousel.

If only Pinocchio was out that day when you spotted Honest John and Gideon riding the carousel. Then again, Geppetto would put a stop to that.

Posted this over at WDW General Discussion, but DIS has been on a downward trend since February of 2021. If DIS continues to fall, will this negatively effect Disneyland and future projects in the Disneyland area? Could it effect things like the PATF Mountain retheme?

I immediately recall the new DTD being scrapped due to missteps. And today there's been talk thrown around of "Disney can't afford this or that", but everyday the bears win, I imagine it further proves that as correct.

Yes. Stock price determines everything.

You can't go to your board and say you're getting a good ROI by spending 200 million to redo an already popular ride, especially when prices are down.

Two Things:
  • I just heard on the radio this morning that Governor DeSantis and the Florida legislature are holding meetings this week to rescind the Reedy Creek Improvement District authorization from 1967 and return the jurisdiction of Walt Disney World to the state and county levels of government. Direct fallout from how poorly Bob Chapek and Disney as a whole handled their corporate messaging around the Parental Rights in Education bill. 🤣

It was rescinded today and if it stands, Orange and Osceola counties are on the hook for a billion in bonds. I can't imagine a local government taking on an extra billion out of the blue.

I'd hate to be a tax payer in those counties if it goes through, they'll see all their taxes skyrocket into the heavens. Which is something that I'm sure the Gov and other hacks in FL didn't think of, I'm sure this isn't going to blow up in their face.....

But this isn't done yet, expect a few lawsuits real quick....

I also wonder how this plays into it. I found it posted Twitter.

I've also seen 2 billion as the total thrown around, $2200 per family.

If true, well there is your lawsuit.

The landowner in this case is Disney, as are the voting members of the district. That would mean Disney would have to vote to dissolve its own district, which we know they aren't going to do.

Sounds like the Gov and other hacks that went down this road might be up a creek without a paddle.
