I looked up the rider capacity and I was shocked to see that FoP has around 1,300-1,440pph and under ideal circumstances RotR has 1,700pph. I know that both rides have unreliability issues, and I didn't follow theme park numbers as much as I do now back when Pandora opened, so I never noticed if it had reliability issues at first. I know all rides do at first, they have to basically practice operating the ride in the real circumstances of being in an operating theme park instead of all the test rides they did before it was open to the public. That said, if Pandora had reliability issues and such poor capacity, why has RotR been so heavily criticized for being unreliable and why has it seemed to have had less riders than FoP? Is it because the boarding groups basically tell you you're out of luck for the day so early on, rather than having the option to go brave a huge 4 hour+ wait?
Again I haven't been to GE so I haven't had the chance to ride Smuggler's Run, but I enjoyed the Na'vi River Journey, at least more than I have seen people online have. It was a different ride experience for sure, there isn't really a story like in PoTC, it was just a quiet, peaceful boat ride through a really pretty artificial jungle. I would have preferred more animatronics and less screens, but I think it gets more hate than it deserves. The food was also fantastic at Pandora from my experience, and I have seen more praise for Pandora's food online than I have for GE's food.
And yes I know GE had more draw before the parks closed, but how much of that is due to the fact that the E-Ticket had just opened up? It's really hard to compare the two because of the boarding group process, when Pandora opened you had to brave the line in order to ride, so the land / area around it seemed more busy because of all the people in line. For RotR people don't have to physically be there while they wait, they could be in an entire other park. Because of this I think it's kind of hard to just compare the demand, would we have seen boarding groups run out for FoP when it opened the same way they were for RotR? Probably. Would we see huge standby lines for RotR if there were no boarding groups? Definitely. But I just don't remember seeing FoP getting as harshly criticized for reliability as RotR has, and thus I could never see Disney opening RotR with just a standby line because when the ride would break down and possibly remain down for extended periods of time, everyone in line is just stuck there.
I don't really know, I am honestly just stating my observations, even searching the web for articles around Pandora's opening I don't find any articles talking about how unreliable the ride was and how difficult it was to even ride the ride if you wanted to. It definitely helps that it is separated into multiple theaters so even if you did happen to have 3 of the 4 theaters down you could at least cycle a small portion of guests so the line was not stagnant until everything was back up like with RotR like you said. I wish we didn't have the parks close so close to the opening of RotR, I know the ride will remain busy for years to come, I was just curious to see how capacity and reliability were going to hopefully improve as even more time went on. I know we were seeing better days as time went on but there were still some hiccups some days as you would expect for any ride. The one thing I always found so peculiar about RotR is how early it would close in the park. I know that it was operating closer to closing than most people thought, but it was still so weird to me that the ride would need to go down early every night and some days we saw it didn't open until a little after opening after the other rides. It's just interesting to me how the whole opening of GE and specifically RotR have gone.
