The Miscellaneous Thought Thread

A few pages back, someone mentioned that the photo owl at the end of Splash Mountain- the one that previously talked about how great your ride photo was as it was projected at the end of the ride- was turned back on, vocals and all. It definitely looks like a mistake, here's a video I took on one of my ride throughs, since I'm not sure if there's video of it online yet. (sorry guys, it's painfully obvious I don't have a career in cinematography)

C'mon Disney- this is just bad show. I get it if maintenance can't afford to fix the figures and keep em fixed, but shouldn't this literally just require turning off the audio track? It was off for years...

You know what really grinds my gears? When people take a picture at DCA and tag Disneyland.

"What's your favorite Disneyland ride?" "Soarin' Over California"

Makes me irritated too.... but admittedly, this is Disney's fault more than anyone. Naming the whole thing the Disneyland Resort kind of means DCA is a part of Disneyland... from a certain point of view. Especially now that there are 20 years of visitors who have no memory of when Disneyland was simply "Disneyland"

I hate Disneyland RESORT. Sounds so tacky, inaccurate and forced. I get that they “have” to market it that way but could they keep it off the merch?

The fan community: Disneyland is too crowded, and DCA doesn't have enough to do to justify spending a full day there. Also, the parks are getting expensive, but since Disneyland is such a charming, delightful place- we'll pay it.

Disney: Disneyland needs a new land so more people visit? We agree. And you want us to remove curbs and planters throughout the park so we can cram more of you in? Got it.

And yet you and the rest of the fan community will keep coming back...

Jokes on you, I guess!

Exactly! I've never seen such a group that outright hates a place but is willing to spend thousands of dollars a year to keep visiting it.

When you renew an annual pass, you wave all your rights to complain about the place. You also are part of the problem.

Things can also be fluid and happen gradually though right? You don’t wake up one day and find out you’re not in love with your wife anymore. It happens over time.

I mean, its like one day you sit in your Jetta finishing your third can of Chef Boyardee ravioli and you think to yourself, "Is this even real food? What have I been doing to myself?" And you check yourself into rehab.

^ Not my own personal experience, but you know, you hear things in board meetings...

I think the problem is that many of us aren't willing to spend thousands a year to keep visiting.

I try to keep my complaints limited to maintenance and future management decisions (like Galaxy's Edge and this Project Curb Removal). I keep my complaints on crowding to a minimum, since I agree- it's incredibly disingenuous to complain about overcrowding while still attending.

My complaints with crowds don't stem from the crowds themselves- but instead how Disney has been handling the crowds. Project Stardust is an ill conceived band aid attempt to correct management and creative mistakes from the last few decades.

I've noticed on my last couple visits that the park didn't have the same feel. For me, this likely has to do with seeing my favorite two attractions- Splash Mountain and Haunted Mansion rot. And the closure of the original Fantasmic!- which I consider to be one of Disney's crowning achievements, and the new version to be a soulless mess by comparison. Or having Mickey's Mix Magic playing instead of an actual fireworks show that attempts to act as an emotional climax for the day at Disneyland. Or the construction walls everywhere throughout the park, though that's more of a temporary issue.

I've also noticed a decline in Cast Member quality. Perhaps I was more oblivious before- but the quality of service received, in many cases, was what I'd expect from Taco Bell, not Disney. I appreciate the higher wage initiatives since Disney does typically expect higher levels of service from their cast members, I just hope that the higher wages actually correlates to higher quality cast members.

I think the next couple years will act as a sort of test for myself personally- seeing if Splash Mountain gets the maintenance it deserves, if Galaxy's Edge ends up being a net positive for the resort, if Marvel Land is better than what we're seeing so far. If not, I could very easily see myself drastically cutting back on the amount I visit- instead of a couple times a year, maybe a couple times every few years, or only for special occasions. I could also see my self drastically cutting back on the merchandise I purchase, which has already been happening since most of what Disneyana is selling isn't super great.
