PLUS it was the rare adventure movie that had a capable woman who the female audience could identify with.

Then we got the idiot screamer in the next movie, sigh. Such a letdown.
I don't care enough to make this a debate but the idea that women can only relate to "girlbosses" like Marion but not to "idiot screamers" like Willie is a broad generalization regarding half of the human population. There are some women who want to go on adventures, some who want to stay home and paint their nails, and plenty in between. None are wrong, weak, or less of a woman because they prefer one over the other.

I actually like the idea of going in the complete opposite direction for Temple of Doom and showcasing a female adventure companion/love interest who is more explicitly proudly into girly things and simply uninterested in roughing it in the jungle with Indy. I'll give George/the screenwriters the benefit of the doubt and assume that's what they were going for -- they just really, really botched the execution.

I have had to spend most of my life identifying with the male protagonist because the women were ninnies. You have no idea how refreshing it was to root for Marion. Willie was a retreat to the bad old "helpless hysterical woman" days and an embarrassment. Too many of those throughout the years and not near enough Marions.

Nothing wrong with a woman who wants to stay home but I don't want to see her in an adventure movie unless she rises to the occasion.

To be honest, I was a little drunk when I wrote that comment. I haven't even seen Inside Out. But the premise oh no... here comes a teenager's anxiety! just feels dumb and obvious (much like how Elemental looked) in a way Pixar's earlier films never were. It certainly doesn't indicate the downfall of Disney animation/Pixar. But I feel like Disney/Pixar used to aspire for more (?).
Yeah, something definitely was lost at Pixar over the years.

That said, while the jury's out on this sequel, I do encourage you to see the original Inside Out. It's one of the last truly great Pixar movies.

Pixar movies used to be a must see event. For me, Inside Out was the beginning of the end. It seemed to me at least that Pixar began taking itself too seriously and lost its sense of fun. Much like Disney animation and the Pocahontas / Hunchback era. I tuned out then, and I'm largely tuned out now.

I will take you up on that recommendation. I’ve heard good things for years; I just happened to tap out on Pixar during the mid-2010s (from Monsters University through Cars 3) and never got around to seeing those films.

Will do my best not to hold Emotional Whirlwind against it lol.

So, how was it?

Just watched if last night. Here’s my hot take… I think it might be my second favorite Indy movie. Did a double header last night and watched Raiders of the lost Ark right after in its entirety for the first time ever. I’m probably the only person in the world to watch the Indy movies in this order (in their entirety)….

The Last Crusade
Temple of Doom
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Dial of Destiny
Raiders of the Lost Ark

Of the movies listed above only Last Crusade and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull were viewed in theaters.

I feel that I’m able to provide a unique perspective due to the order I viewed these movies in as well as the ages that they were viewed for the first time. I think that Raiders is a tad overrated and I think Kingdom is underrated. I think Dial is way underrated. Kingdom and Dial I think suffer from huge gaps between releases creating unrealistic expectations from audiences that changed after 15-20 years.

Here’s how I’d rank them right now…

1. Last Crusade
2. Dial of Destiny
3. Raiders of the Lost Ark
4. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
5. Temple of Doom

Dial was a good time. I really enjoyed it actually and that’s with the kids doing their thing and me having to pause it 87 times to get through the movie. It might be a slot too high on my list due to recency bias but I’m pretty sure that’s where it will land. He didn’t come across to me a grumpy old man like Luke did in Force Awakens. It may have also been assisted by my super low expectations.

Raiders obviously gets everyone’s respect because it’s the original and it has all the nostalgia for people that saw it in 1981. It also has the best soundtrack and is pretty much nearly the entire inspiration behind Temple of the Forbidden eye attraction/queue outside of Mara and the lava room which is more Temple of Doom. As someone seeing it for the first time as an adult and after the other 4 movies, I can appreciate all of that but I can also see some of the flaws. It has some of the clunky pacing that older movies do sometimes like when he “rekindles” with Marion in Nepal and in the next scene they re like smitten junior high kids walking around Cairo. Then he thinks she dies and cut to next scene he’s drinking alcohol with a monkey as if he just lost a big bet or something. A little emotionally underbaked. Then Sallah tells him something that can be paraphrased as “don’t worry pal, there’s more fish in the sea.” Lol. It’s very much a product of its time but when you watch for the first time as an adult it’s hard to put it on the pedestal that other people do. Not sure why I had remembered the film as being “chatty” as that wasn’t the case at all.

My rankings:

1. Raiders - because it was so unexpected and different in wonderful ways
2. Last Crusade - because Connery
3. Dial - because less bad than my final two
4. Temple of Doom - Ke Huy gives it the edge despite idiot screamer
5. Skull - because what-the-f?? ending and Shia

I was leaning toward purchasing Magic Keys if/when they go on sale in early 2024 but I’m not sure it’s worth it with HM and the ride formerly known as Splash Mountain going down for the majority of the year. This might be a So Cal 3 day ticket year. Granted, having 1.5 beautiful/ fun parks at your disposal would still be a nice perk but something doesn’t sit well about having the West side of DL dead and behind construction walls. Not to mention the effect it will have on the rides that are open. Also I feel like I should see if they did Splash any justice before I hand them over a few thousand dollars.

Interesting. Based on your reasoning it seems like you would be able to understand how I came up with my ranking for #1-3 considering when/ how I viewed them.

Temple of Doom is obviously more iconic than Crystal Skull but if we re judging just off what’s objectively the better movie from beginning to end I’d have to go with Skull. Technically I should have the most bias toward Temple of Doom as it’s the one I watched the most on TV when I was a kid.

Man, you think you know a guy.

Raiders is my favorite by far, and the only one I ever care about watching.

Temple of Doom is the best because it's a pure adventure movie. No Nazis, no aliens, just good old exoticism. That's what Indiana Jones really should be all about. Every Indiana Jones movie should have at least one scene with chilled monkey brains.

Genuinely, though, this is why Dial of Destiny sucks as much as it does. Temple of Doom creates a bizarre, fairy tale like world of adventure, mystery, and magic. These are fascinating places that offer excitement and are compelling worlds to visit (hence why Forbidden Eye takes so many visual queues from Temple of Doom). Dial of Destiny lacks a single location that would make for a desirable destination. The world presented in Dial is not through a romantic lens which makes for a drab and miserable experience, not a world I want to return to.

It’s interesting because Temple of Doom and the last 20 minutes of Last Crusade was was pretty much my definition of Indiana Jones for the bulk of my life but having just recently watched all 5 and if I have to judge the movie objectively and based on which movies entertained me the most from start to finish I think it’s last for me. Then again is it possible I’m ranking it last because I’ve seen it the most compared to the the other four I had either never seen, forgotten most of it or had only seen a few times. So it would make sense why the others would be more entertaining.

Apparently my ranking is pretty unique. Looked through a bunch of articles and this guys is the closest I found. He just has Raiders at #2 and Dial of Destiny at # 3 which I considered for a second but felt that I was just putting Raiders there out of respect so I switched it to #3. No ranking/ article has Dial of Destiny ranked higher than #3.

There is some interesting background on Temple of Doom which I was not aware of. Apparently Lawrence Kasdan and Spielberg aren’t huge fans of the film.

"There’s also some casual racism and Kate Capshaw’s performance as Willie Scott is absolutely grating. Good God woman STOP SCREAMING."

We're close enough in our rankings and rationale. I could talk with this guy.

We don't agree on a lot of stuff, but on this we agree. Dial is underrated and a good time.
