Only one more week until Halloween, gang! 🎃

I picked up my main loot at Costco; Almond Hershey bars and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Tomorrow I'm going down to See's Candy to wink at the counter ladies to rustle up an extra sample, and then have them create my little Best Costume gift baskets for me. This is a new See's Candy crew in a new town for me, so I hope they understand my vision.

Are you ready? Did you buy candy? Is your costume finished? What are your kids going as?

I was looking at the Halloween evening forecast, and much of the country will be unseasonably cold and even snowy. Those poor kids going as Barbie are going to freeze their pink hip-huggers off in the Midwest and South!

Weather Forecast for Tuesday, October 31st 7pm;

Minneapolis = 26 Degrees and Breezy
Chicago = 31 Degrees and Snow Flurries ❄️
St. Louis = 33 Degrees and Wet Snow 🌨️
Nashville = 37 Degrees and Clear
Raleigh = 43 Degrees and Breezy
Cleveland = 35 Degrees and Snow/Rain Mix 🌧️
Atlanta = 39 Degrees and Breezy
Dallas = 44 Degrees and Breezy

But the worst I think is...

Denver = 16 Degrees and Windy 🥶

The western third of the nation is looking warmer and drier, but still a notably cool Halloween evening this year...

Seattle = 48 and Clear
Portland = 50 and Clear
San Francisco = 54 and Clear
Anaheim = 59 and Clear
San Diego = 61 and Clear
St. George, Utah = 53 and Clear

Minneapolis kids are well versed at putting their costumes on over their jackets. They will be fine, as long we don't have a blizzard.

You reminded me that I need to buy candy!

Got my Reese’s and Rice Crispy Treats Homestyle stocked up knowing full well I’m going to end up eating the entire stash myself. I’m going to dress up as an old dork wearing a VR headset, dancing horribly while shaking non-existent maracas. I’ve had loads of practice.

Orlando forecast for Halloween so far is very warm and humid.

I’ll be giving out the same thing I gave out last year: an assortment of candy (3-5 pieces each), a juice box, and a pack of cookies. The juice last year was nowhere sweet enough, so I bought a different brand this year. And I’m not letting them pick their cookie of choice this year lol. They’ll get what they get.

Didn’t have time to put together a costume this year.

Not cool of the generic calendar to show me that the half marathon weekend is available only to be denied by the app for scheduling.
Ok, a friend pointed out nicely that it's probably because our keys expire at the end of November so of course we can't access the calendar after that. My new gripe is that they won't let me renew early so I can grab some dates during this popular time.

I'm glad I know people who are smarter than me.

I drove down the hill into town and went to See's Candy this evening. The counter ladies there were lovely, and as I explained my purpose there to the first lady she called over her co-worker to hear this idea. They'd never heard of Halloween Best Costume Award gift baskets before, but they immediately jumped into action. Somewhere upstairs, Mary See is smiling down on the St. George, Utah store and those charming counter ladies.

And driving home with extra samples stuffed into my car's cupholder, I remembered that See's Candy was once rumored to have a presence in the "California Workplace" section of DCA that never really panned out like WDI had hoped. Early artwork of DCA showed a black-and-white checkered candy factory that was obviously See's Candy. But it never made it, and the entire "California Workplace" concept was radically scaled down and just ended up being the Boudin bakery tour and the Mission Tortilla factory.

I spent a couple minutes trying to Google the late 1990's WDI artwork that had a See's Candy factory tour across from what is now The Little Mermaid ride, but I couldn't find any. It may be lost to abandoned websites by now.

Mary See was a great American businesswoman and a California original. She started her own candy store in 1921 in LA using her own recipes, and it grew into a Western empire. She had very high standards for quality and professionalism that last to this day. Smiles, Service, Samples was her motto then, and is still the company motto today.

Here's to Mary See, high standards and high quality, and you! :)

I found that concept art.

Ghirardelli’s tastes much better.
I don’t think I’ve ever tried plain See’s chocolate without the various fillings. The See’s Molasses Chips are one of my top favorite candies ever and I love the assortments except when I get coconut (allergic) or marzipan (why???). Everything else is amazing. But for pure chocolate, I think I’d also vote for Ghirardelli (and their Sea Salt Caramel squares are as good as See’s Molasses Chips).

Ghirardelli Sea Salt Caramels are some of my favorite chocolates but I enjoy all the various fillings and varieties of See's so I end up usually getting a variety pack of See's when I wanna splurge on nice chocolates.

I buy a pound of See's Nuts & Chews and I'm in heaven. They pair well with almost anything after 10pm on any night of the week in any season; Syrah, Port, Scotch or Bourbon, hot tea, fresh coffee, etc.

That said, when I had an AP I almost always stopped at Ghirardelli's for a Gold Rush Sundae with the caramel and the California almonds. Truly one of the best things DCA has done, aside from Cars Land and the Manhattans at Carthay Circle Lounge.

It looks like my decision has been made for me: Here in Central Florida, there’s a Ghirardelli’s at Disney Springs, but I just found out the only See’s to be found around here are seasonal pop-up shops. I’ll just file “lack of See’s” in the Florida column alongside “flabbergasting humidity” and “inferior Pirates of the Caribbean.”

Re: the Ghirardelli sundaes: They really are wonderful. Good shakes there, too!
