HAVE THE PREDICTIONS FROM OCTOBER 2004 COME TRUE?

This post was made in October. Do you think it was a premonition?

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Read first post - just under these instructions. Most of the "meat" is in the second half of the first post (which is what we're focusing on here)

2. Then see photographs of the NEW Land: http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showthread.php?t=54478

3. Questions to be discussed:

a. Where can you see the STORY of the Land being improved? Is there anywhere where the story of the Land is NOT being told?

b. What was the biggest change, and was it for the best? In terms of beauty? In terms of storytelling or uniqueness?

c. Does the color scheme complement the Land?

d. Point out new areas where we see man's interaction with nature highlighted.

THE LAND UPDATE: IS DISNEY "LISTENING TO THE LAND" WE ALL LOVE??

We knew that Soarin was going to alter the Land. We found out that the Land would go down January 2nd to bring in this new "clone" from Disney's California Adventure.

Here is the news:

BIGSTORY1.jpg

During the rehab, which will extend through Spring Break, The Land may undergo the following changes:

  • POTENTIAL RAMPS, A NEW ELEVATOR, STAIRCASES, and ESCALATORS will be installed to ease guest flow to the bottom level
  • THE SUNSHINE SEASON FOOD FAIR will be "demolished" and replaced by a brand new, smaller restaurant. It may have seating back where the current Food Fair is or perhaps in the center of the pavilion with more "permanent" tables.
  • LIVING WITH THE LAND will have its queue changed with potential ride changes. (No, the greenhouses aren’t going anywhere). There may be a new opening scene and brand new Animatronics.
  • THE BALLONS AND FOUNTAIN may be going away.
  • CALIFORNIA TIME. . . gift shops, fastpass, you name it.
  • ENTIRE RETHEMING of the pavilion.

That's where the BIG news comes in. For the first time, we are hearing strong information about the long-held rumor about THE LAND TRAVEL AGENCY. Most of us brushed it off as being too ridiculous.

Well, as ridiculous as it may sound, looks like we're getting it. The details (rumors)?

  • "MODERNIZATION" of the pavilion with "travel agency" theming.
  • SOARIN' will become an "airport" (as confirmed by the most recent Disney press release)
  • LIVING WITH THE LAND would be rethemed to a CRUISE LINE. Will this affect the ride? Who knows. Maybe the name.
  • POTENTIAL RETHEMING of the future restaurant to suit the pavilion's needs.
  • CIRCLE OF LIFE would remain. Thank GOODNESS . . .

This is the point where I chime in.

What does the TRAVEL AGENCY have to do with THE LAND?

"Symbiotic relationships mean creative partnerships. The earth is to be seen neither as an ecosystem to be preserved unchanged nor as a quarry to be exploited for selfish and short-range economic reasons, but as a garden to be cultivated for the development of its own potentialities of the human adventure. The goal of this relationship is not the maintenance of the status quo, but the emergence of new phenomena and new values." - René Dubos

This is a statement that stands outside the Land pavilion. The Land was intended to be a celebration between man's interaction with nature and Food Production.

Wait a second... to go back to that quote: The earth is to be seen neither as an ecosystem to be preserved unchanged nor as a quarry to be exploited for selfish and short-range economic reasons, but as a garden to be cultivated. . . - what rings a bell with "selfish and short-range economic reasons" here??

The Soarin ride system certainly adds a good LOOK at the Land, but of what relevance is this? First of all, the film is a direct clone from Disney's California Adventure. Although Disney may install a new film in 2007, what kind of an excuse is it to showcase California terrain and the Golden Gate Bridge and put it into the Land's themeing?

Well it wasn't put into the Land's theming. If the Travel Agency report holds true, which I hope it doesn't, it shows how a direct clone has potentially ruined the originality and true spirit of an original Walt Disney World experience.

ffafcopy.jpg

Don't get me wrong. Modernizing the Land is a necessity - as I know most people will agree, no matter how cool the Land is now - but of what relevances is a TRAVEL AGENCY theming? It may add to a "story," but certainly not the story of The Land.

You see, by bringing in a DIRECT CLONE and potentially installing one of the most weak themes of all Epcot, Disney has demonstrated that it really doesn't care for the true meaning behind the attractions. So long as the clone is "cheap" (i.e. not investing in what makes the Land pavilion so great at what it is), could Disney just drop it down and change an ORIGINAL attracion to mold it?

Wouldn't it have been better off to mold SOARIN' to the Land (symbiosis-wise) and avoid the weak use of story? The worst part of this potential change rests in the potential result that an INAUTHENTIC story may overshadow the celebration - and warning - of symbiosis.

CLICK HERE - http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showthread.php?t=40423 - for my Call to Arms thread. It also discusses the necessity for the PEACEFUL nature of the Land as necessary to Epcot and all Disney theme parks. The Land is essentially the last "peaceful" pavilion without Wonders of Life, yet tends to be so popular at the same time.

Is Disney listening to the Land? What do you think?

Well, 10 more years and the pavilian will probably be changed and rethemed yet again. Just weather down the storm for 10 years, ok?

But I want to know why you want to keep Circle of Life? It is a bad example of what an educational film should be. Educational films should be more open minded and feel less like the info is being forced. Well that is what I think. I have decided to never see that film again.

I do hope The Land though ends up nice looking. The travel agency thing though is a bad idea.

Do they really need to get rid of the baloons? They do represent the 4 winds of the world and with this crappy idea of a Travel Agency, they would still fit in...

Yikes. That's all I can say. Yikes. I assume this comes from very reliable information?

A travel agency? What the freakin' heck is a travel agency doing in Epcot? [prays that Living with the Land doesn't become a shameless plug for DCL]

I found Circle of Life to be very powerful. It's a warning with familiar characters to show the dangers of certain human activities and how they affect the Land. Symbiosis was essentially the same, but Circle of Life holds pretty much the core of what the Land stands for, I think.

- I agree. And I hope I'm wrong with the information.

The Land should be peaceful. The Land is one of my favorite places in WDW and it is a shame that this has to be done to it. General, this is a sad day that the Land will no longer be as tranquil as it once was. No balloons or fountain (REALLY mad about the fountain), and a travel agency theme? How is that Future World?

They don't even want to call if Future World. . . Disney has been pressing to rename it "Discoveryland" to permit (albeit cheaper, perhaps) changes like this. . . ?

Great pictures and great post!

Travel agency theme? That IS odd. When we consider how much travel agents contribute to bookings at WDW and the cruise line, maybe (?) this revised pavilion is a tribute to these WDW helpers.

I've said before that I do enjoy the baloons and the food court at The Land has always been the only place in Futureworld to eat, IMO. I'll miss them . . . BUT

Soarin has the potential to be the first E ticket attraction at that pavilion since EVER. I've read musings that Soarin doesn't integrate well into the existing theme of the Pavilion, but maybe Soarin the attraction has a bigger upside than the existing pavilion so that the pavilion has to change to support the attraction.

I'm willing to give this redesigned Land pavilion a chance if adding Soarin gets families back to EPCOT for more than just M:S, TT and a meal in the World Showcase. :(

Well I'm glad I spent a little extra time in the pavilion on my last trip, because I have a feeling I won't be spending alot of time in there anymore.

Travel Agency for the whole pavilion? Changing Living With The Land because of Soarin? Getting rid of the landmarks of the pavilion? Oh well, another one bites the dust. Maybe the average guest will like the changes, but I don't like the idea at all. This isn't what I was expecting when Soarin' was announced.

Let me say though, I'm not expecting Disney to do what alot of the people on here want to do. But these boards are here for the fans to say what they feel. Just because I hate this idea doesn't mean it won't be a better decision for Disney. But I can still have my own opinion.

A TRAVEL AGENCY?????? Are they KIDDING? What is wrong with these people? They are just completely out of control. It was one thing to bring in a clone, another thing to take away the SUnshine Season, but this is just atrocious! They are destroying one of the last peaceful places left in what used to be Future World!

Sorry if this is really nasty, but the Yankkes are throwing a perfect game against the Red Sox and I am NOT a happy camper right now! :fork:

Regardless what it is renamed, it will always be Future World. This seems bad, a travel agency? What will it be a huge DVC? What's next... Spaceship Earth selling cellphones? Wonders of Life selling medical supplies/insurance? It shouldn't be renamed "Discoveryland" (which sounds like it belongs in Magic Kingdom) but "sell out world" :fork:

*sigh* Okay everyone, grab your torches and pitch forks. We're not going to let them turn our pavillion into something that has nothing to do with the theme at all!!!!! :fork:

And for Eisner's next cheap trick, He shall capture two twin fairy girls and dress them up like Tinkerbell and force them to sing at Magic Kingdom until they call on their giant Moth guardian: Mothra!

I have a message from the Twin Fairies of Mothra's Island: Mothra and Battra have agreed that Eisner is a threat to the Land's message of keeping the Earth safe and livable by putting in something as lame as a Travel Agency. They have teamed up and are heading to Burbank to destroy the Team Disney Building. It's time for the board to Listen to the Land we all love!

This new theme sounds very odd... if they DO do it, I hope they can make it work. Living With the Land is one of my favorite attractions there as well and I would really hate to see it get changed too much. Its something I always love to visit each time I'm there.

I also like the Lion King movie there, it fits with the theme, its funny and informative. I don't mind the Food Fair leaving and I do welcome the Soarin' attraction. It just should have been renamed Soarin' over the Land... it can have thrills and still be themed to the pavillian.

Just no changing the Land ride! Don't do it or turn it into some travel agency thing! :fork:
