#05- Carry-On
Carry-On.jpg

[Watched on Netflix]

Carry-On was a shockingly fun thriller following Taron Egerton doing his best Tom Holland impression as he faces off against Patrick Bateman who was shockingly good as this terrorist leader. It's a cheesy holiday action film set in an airport and if that's not your thing I totally get it, but for me this movie was a ton of fun and exactly what I was hoping to get out of it.

#04- That Christmas
That Christmas.jpg

[Watched on Netflix]

I did not expect to enjoy That Christmas based purely on the fact Netflix's animation has been really rough recently. That said, I ended up really liking this one. The movie is sweet and emotional with some great character moments and while it does devolve into a pretty common trope of family movies when they need a third act, it's not done poorly at all. While it may not be a Christmas classic, I do think this was a decent enough time.

#03- A Complete Unknown
A Complete Unknown.jpg

[Watched in theaters]

The jump between #4 and these top three is a crazy one, these three are all much closer to one another than anything else on the list so do not take this being at 3 as anything less. I'm a pretty big fan of Bob Dylan (though admittedly I do prefer his folk stuff over his rock stuff, I just really like folk music) as well as people like Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and Woody Guthrie so this movie was pretty much tailor made for me. All of the performances here are award-worthy from Chalamet as Bob Dylan, to Elle Fanning, Edward Norton, Scoot McNairy, and Monica Barbaro. The music here is expectedly great, the emotions are high, and the movie is overall fantastic. Definitely a movie I'd recommend people go see though I can see where if you're not a folk music fan this would be boring.

#02- Flow
Flow.jpg

[Watched in theaters]

Flow is supremely gorgeous and fascinating with a compelling narrative, tense danger, and high emotions without ever once uttering a single word of dialogue. The animal noises are fantastically done and this movie has some of the best sound, cinematography, and writing of any movie this year. If you haven't already watched The Golden Tikis Nomination Ceremony, don't be surprised when this obscure little movie pops up a lot.

#01- Nosferatu

I have a handful of really exciting plans in the works involving film analysis and viewing so stay tuned. Here's to saying farewell to 2024 and to an exciting movie year in 2025!

Well it's January and my friends and I have been working at something since last April. We're going to be starting a YouTube channel discussing films, doing top ten lists, reviews, etc. Tonight we're kicking it off with our inaugural stream at 8pm where we look at our most anticipated movies of 2025. Going live at 8:15 pm so feel free to hop on in if you can! We're working at setting up an actual channel and this will soon enough be edited into a finalized edited video, but tonight kicks us off!

It's Golden Globes night and it's an incredibly difficult one because this awards season is kind of all over the place. Obviously this show doesn't have as much pull on the Oscars as something like SAG or BAFTA, but I always find it to be a fun one. As always, I've got my predictions ready. I'm way less confident on this one than I was last year, but I've got some strong guesses in here. (I'm only doing movies because I don't watch TV very much).
Best Motion Picture- Drama: The Brutalist
Best Motion Picture- Musical or Comedy: Emilia Pérez :(
Best Motion Picture- Animated: The Wild Robot [Flow wins]
Best Motion Picture- Non-English Language: Emilia Pérez
Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture- Drama: Fernanda Torres- I'm Still Here
Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture- Drama: Timothée Chalamet- A Complete Unknown [Adrien Brody wins]
Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture- Musical or Comedy: Mikey Madison- Anora [Demi Moore wins!!]
Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture- Musical or Comedy: Hugh Grant- Heretic [Sebastian Stan wins]
Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture: Ariana Grande- Wicked [Zoe Saldana wins]

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture: Kieran Culkin- A Real Pain
Best Director- Motion Picture: Brady Corbet- The Brutalist
Best Screenplay- Motion Picture: Peter Straughan- Conclave

Best Original Score- Motion Picture: Daniel Blumberg- The Brutalist [Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross win]
Best Original Song- Motion Picture: "El Mal"- Emilia Pérez
Cinematic and Box Office Achievement: Inside Out 2 [Wicked wins] This category is so ridiculously stupid I cannot even say how ridiculously stupid this is. Inside Out 2 made over a billion and was 2024's highest grossing movie and it doesn't win the stupid "which one made money" award. Cut this damn award already.

Sebastian Stan winning for Best Actor is a huge win for the cult film community as far as I'm concerned. A Different Man really does deserve more love. I would have never even known about it had it not popped up multiple times on PerGron's Golden Tikis short lists.

A genuinely shocking but equally deserved win!

8/15 is terrible. And some of those wins they pulled directly out of their a*s. Sebastian Stan and Demi Moore were super exciting and Flow for animated picture were surprises to be sure, but welcome ones.

I'm a grade A Emilia Perez hater and the fact it did so well is very upsetting. Also, they need to give me The Brutalist and they need to do that right now.

I need to vent about a couple of TERRIBLE takes Grace Randolph has about the Globes. First and foremost she's running her mouth saying Mikey Madison's career is basically over because she didn't win the Globe and that if she doesn't land the role of Harley Quinn (which TOTALLY helped Gaga's acting career :p ) she'll basically just fade into obscurity.

Then she says she's happy for Sebastian Stan but in the same breath basically says he needs to be taking on more high budget roles if he wants to be taken "seriously". Grace, honey...the man JUST won a Golden Globe for a weird little cult movie AND is about to have a leading role in a tent pole MCU movie. The man is doing fine. The fact that he sticks mostly to cult movies is exactly WHY his career has blown up as much as it has.

Lastly, she literally just never bothered to watch The Substance before tonight.

I just can't with this woman...

Ah yes, the Queen of absolute terrible movie takes back at it again with terrible awards and career takes.

Mikey Madison isn’t even over for this awards season, forget he whole career. We have to see how she and everything else do in the next few shows, the globes are the first big one but I remember Banshees and Fablemans sweeping and neither got a big win at the Oscars. Madison and Anora are critical darlings so the more critic focused shows I think will give her her flowers. Also, Harley Quinn is absolutely not the career making performance she seems to think it is. God, Grace’s dependence on big blockbusters as catalysts for people’s careers will never not astound me.

Yeah, how can you say a man who was nominated TWICE in TWO ACTING CATEGORIES and WON ONE needs to “save his career?” Clearly he’s doing something right. It’s not his fault neither of his movies got huge releases. Like you said earlier, most people don’t even know A Different Man exists and yet it won a pretty big award. I think Sebastian Stan is doing fine.

Her take on Demi Moore “not being a good actress” is an insane one too. Like, watch The Substance Grace, don’t talk out of your aßß.

You’d think for someone who’s been doing this as long as Grace Randolph she’d know anything about the industry. But then again, you’d also think that she’d have picked up a new camera and a mic but she’s just been yelling into an HP laptop mic for as long as I’ve been consuming film criticism so who am I to question her.

Come to think of it, I'm honestly surprised this is the first time she's come up in this thread haha. She's a TERRIBLE critic, probably the closest thing I have to a "if they hate it, I'll love it" type person honestly. Her loving Nosferatu was totally out of character and a big outlier in her usual tastes this year. And her hard hitting box office analysis basically amounts to "if it's not an instant mega hit right off the bat it's a total failure that's doomed to obscurity and everyone involved should be ashamed. Based on your post though, it seems both of us can't help but still hate-watch her out of sheer ironic entertainment. She really is a clown. If she came out as a new critic in the industry with these blatantly wrong takes she'd be laughed out of the industry. The ONLY reason she has a career is that she basically got in on the YouTube film critic gig at the ground level along with folks like Jahns and Stuckmann and cornerned a niche within that niche with her box officee coverage.

Yea, the sheer amount of talking out her *** about The Substance last night was INSANE. I kind of get what she was trying to say with the Demi Moore thing. GI Jane didn't exactly light the world on fire, but she admitted to reviewing The Last Showgirl so how is the concept of a seasoned actress having a late career defining performance foreign to her?? I love how she basically openly admitted she didn't want to live stream her reaction to The Substance because she KNEW she'd be in the minority opinion with it, because she's pretty much already made up her mind about how she feels about it. I can already hear her review basically being a hyperbolic "don't bite the hand that feeds you" rant on how movies should be more pro-industry.

My go-to example of how the Golden Globes literally don't matter when it comes to award projections is Atonement winning Best Picture (Drama) over No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood. I actually really, REALLY like Atonement. It was the movie that introduced us to Sairoise Ronan and was an early showcase for McAvoy's acting talents, it had fantastic production design, cinematography, music etc. and I really dig the structure/ending. With that said, it's still an OBVIOUS distant third over the two real contenders that awards season which in turn are pretty regularly cited very high on "best of the decade" lists.
