Imagineers and The Final Fantasyland:
A Slytherin Presentation
Without a single doubt, New Fantasyland has been a success. With it's immersive environments and wondrous new attractions, New Fantasyland is some of Disney's finest work
There's just a tiny little issue.. The older Fantasyland just pales when compared to it's newer neighbor.
To tackle this issue, among others, we have a detailed plan for a final phase of New Fantasyland. In terms of the renovation, only the Mine Train and Storybook Circus remain untouched. Everything else is either replaced, moved, or renovated.
So, I ask you all this...
How would you like to experience the legend of King Arthur?
Have you ever wanted to scale a great beanstalk and explore the wonders above?
Have you ever dreamed of wandering around the crazy world of Wonderland?
Would you like to see some of your favorite Fantasyland rides gain much-needed refurbishments?
If you awnsered yes to all these questions, you're going to love Phase 3!
Below is a detailed description of the entire Phase 3, going clockwise from PhilarMagic to the new dark ride where Princess Fairytale Hall once stood.
What are you wating for? Let's go explore!
Aesthetic Changes:
Arguably the most important feature of the entire renovation, all of Old Fantasyland gets a aesthetic makeover.
Gone are the cheap and underwhelming fair tents! In it's place stands a charming storybook village, a castle courtyard of sorts. The area is directly inspired by Disneyland and Disneyland Paris. The village is actually designed to fit in with the nearby Seven Dwarves Mine Train, blending in with the rocky hillside above.
Little tidbits to classic stories have been left around town. Stained glass windows picture scenes directly from classic Disney fairytales, while hedge statues of Humpty Dumpty and the Three Little Pigs lie about.
Past the village, dead on ahead lies the Enchanted Forest. To the right is Winnie the Pooh, Seven Dwarves Mine Train, and the surreal world of Wonderland.. but more on that later.
As stated before, we'll go through the new additions clockwise, so let's start with a symphony of the finest sorts..
Philharmagic will receive a refurbishment to the entire show building interior and exterior, transforming from a nice, but forgettable show into an immersive experience.
Exterior:
Completely re-imagined. The theme is changed to that of a “fantasy opera house.” The building will be re-named the Magic Kingdom Music Hall. (Ideally, “Mickey’s PhilharMagic” is still displayed on the exterior somewhere.) The building even has a new backstory. Music is a powerful form of magic that ties people from all different cultures and backgrounds together. Where the music hall currently sits used to be a tiny make-shift wooden stage. While Fantasyland was never a place of sadness, it was not always a place of such boisterous song. No one can remember how it started exactly, but the legend says that one day, someone just got up on the stage and began to sing. It stopped everyone in their tracks. The happy folk of Fantasyland could not resist the beautiful melodies coming from the tiny stage. It started a frenzy. From that moment on, the music never stopped on the stage. Every day, someone else would get on stage and share their stories through music and song. The concept became so popular that Cinderella and Prince Charming commissioned a formal music hall for all of Fantasyland to share and be able to enjoy the magic of music in style.
Queue and Pre-show:
As you walk in, a poster announcing famous guest conductor “Mickey Mouse with his Fantastical Magical Orchestra present: PhilharMagic!” greets you as you walk in, with a photo of Mickey looking quite regal. Lining the newly refurbished walls are posters of past acts, similar to what was in the entry queue before. However, one by one, the posters begin to come alive with music and animation. Every 100 seconds, one of 12 posters placed around the queue will perform a 15-20 second animation (full cycle is 20 minutes). As you sit in the queue, orchestrally arranged Disney favorites play (These also fade out temporarily for the poster action.). The metal barriers lining the queue are replaced with rich, ornate wood (with hidden Mickeys carved in, of course,). Gorgeous, golden crown moulding replaces the basic look currently displayed in the building. The ceiling tiles are replaced with ceiling murals of Renaissance-style musical moments from Disney films. Right before the turn into the open lobby area outside of the theater itself is a plaque commemorating the hall’s “founders” which are actual Disney musicians and composers (Sherman brothers, Howard Ashman, Alan Menken, Randy Newman, Elton John, Tim Rice, Michael Giacchino etc.)
Grand Lobby:
The curtains lining the walls are replaced with pillars and faux marble (lined with heavy acoustic padding between the lobby and the theater itself). The chandeliers are replaced and the current columns are refurbed to match. Cast members no longer squeeze you into the room, as it has been redesigned to include a winding queue that splits off into different sections leading in to each entrance to the theater. The theater room now includes a longer pre-show to accommodate the longer seating times the re-design will generate. Carved sculptures of Fab Five “angels” holding various instruments are placed on the walls around the room.
(photo above is JUST an example of the color scheme and decor. Obviously the room is not this big)
Show Room:
Much like the rest of the building, the theater itself is redesigned and has a new theme that matches the regal opera house style.
(photo again for reference and example, not exact picture of what we'd get)
The show’s mechanical design works similarly to before. The curtains are replaced with more appropriate patterns to match the new theme. The projectors will be replaced with new 4K 3D projectors. The film is also completely replaced. The Mickey and Donald scenes will remain mostly the same, but with newly updated animation and 3D technology to create a stunning picture.
The show lighting and projectors are hidden in faux opera boxes that are now installed on the second level surrounding the new seats. Those who look closely (with binoculars) can see elegant calligraphy on place cards that are sitting on top of the “Reserved” opera box seats for famous Disney figures like Princess Tiana and Naveen, Merlin, King Triton, Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, and even Bernard and Bianca.
The Donald “duck butt” animatronic is recycled and still exists in the show.
The “Whole New World” scene is replaced with a Tangled scene of “I See the Light.” Projected lanterns float gently around the theatre while actual animatronic lanterns are revealed behind curtains in the faux opera boxes, also “floating.” The Lion King scene is replaced is Frozen’s “Let It Go” [don’t hate, y’all]. Large fans simulate the brisk mountain winds. As Elsa’s ice castle magically grows, the swirling projections move all around the theatre and hidden LED lights (that trace the outline of the opera boxes) shimmer with Elsa’s ice powers. The Little Mermaid scene is replaced with “Zero to Hero.” During the “You Can Fly” scene, light fog is released into the theatre to simulate clouds. This is dissipated with the fans from “Let It Go.” Robin Williams is again immortalized in a new Aladdin scene in “Friend Like Me.” Again, projection effects are used in this number and firework effects on the ceiling and walls go off.
The order of the scenes is also changed as follows:
“Friend Like Me”
“Fantasia”
“Zero to Hero”
“You Can Fly”
“Let It Go”
“I See the Light”
Miscellaneous details-
CM Outfits:
CMs wear newly designed formal wear befitting the new theme.
Opera glasses:
Newly designed 3D glasses are introduced for guests’ enjoyment. Instead of typical yellow 3-D glasses, the new glasses are slightly curved to fit around the face. The glasses are cast a matte copper color and have circular lenses.
It's A Small World:
It's A Small World is one of four Old Fantasyland attractions to get a major refurbishment.
First off, the exterior is given a significant rehab. Instead of the loading area being indoors, the tent and roof over the loading area is now gone, leaving the famous clock tower to stand out.
Once inside the attraction, you'll find that all of the broken effects have been restored, like the flying carpets taking the skies again or the happy sun finally spinning. The refurb isn't too complicated, as It's A Small World is a nearly perfect attraction other than some minor quirks.
The exterior is changed to reflect the castle courtyard theme of Old Fantasyland, looking more similar to the one in Paris. Gone is the cheap tent!
The ride itself, unlike Small World, is given a
massive refurbishment. The ride is completely retracked, allowing for a smoother experience.
All of the sets and scenes are tweaked with projection mapping and modern lighting. The anamatronics are given further range of motion and projected faces. And best of all, Captain Hook's voice actor is changed, due to complaints about the sound echoing.
Hopefully with this refurbishment, this ride looks
and feels better than ever!
Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid:
First off, most of the animatronics in the ride are given projection mapping faces, something that is done across Fantasyland.
Some effects and sets are changed as well. The plastic fish before the Under The Sea scene are gone, replaced by a screen effect of fish rushing to the grotto. Most of the other cheap effects are removed or renovated to become more advanced. No cheap spinning starfish allowed!
The show-building is extended to incorporate a very crucial extra scene. A massive Ursula animatronic rises above our clamshells, before being stabbed by Prince Erik's Ship (a practical effect).
From there, the clams return to the final scene, now satisfied with an actual ending and a better attraction overall.
Fantasyland has expanded to take up a large expansion plot between Little Mermaid and Seven Dwarves Mine Train. The area will be anchored by a new E-ticket, based on the classic Disney cartoon Mickey and the Beanstalk, using a Tower of Terror-like ride system (The ride is essentially a family-friendly TOT).
Disney has decided to keep a full layout of the attraction under wraps under D23 (
) but untill then, they have provided a drafted layout for the design of the attraction.
Attraction Outline:
Area:
.Field - flat farmland.
.Back of the area has a large cliffside pulling up into artificial clouds.
.Mickey, Donald, and Goofy’s farmhouse sits at the base of the cliffside, with a large beanstalk rising out of its’ roof into the clouds.
Queue
.Similar to 7DMT, winding through their farm. Few gags and one or two interactive elements strewn about.
Load:
.Mickey, Donald, and Goofy’s house. Base of the beanstalk shooting up out of the floor.
.Vehicle load is circled around the front of the beanstalk.
Ride (basic structure):
.Vehicles exit the side of the house, turn into cave next to it.
.Vehicles go through a mirror of the loading area (basically to make it easier to have “two” beanstalks. The beanstalk, as in the loading area, comes up out of the floorboards, up into the night sky. The only other thing in the house is a table with a very finely cut loaf of bread on it.
.Vehicles get picked up by a leaf and go up the beanstalk, through the roof of the house, into the night sky, and through the clouds.
.Ascent stops at the reveal of Willie’s castle, off in the distance, partially shrouded by sunset.
.Short corridor of foliage.
.Vehicles enter the castle through a crack in the wall.
.Giant castle interior set.
.2 story Willie the Giant (don’t worry. Only the face/ head has any movement.
.Willie “picks up” vehicles. (another elevator, this time longer to look like the vehicles are in Willie’s cupped hand.)
.Vehicles now on top of table.
.Pass Mickey, Donald, and Goofy in a box, Mickey escaping through its’ keyhole.
.Mickey taking the harp.
.Willie yelling/ chasing (conveyed through the vehicles shaking.)
.Now outside (of castle.)
.Final confrontation with Willie (hand, voice)
.Fall through outside fake clouds/ outside beanstalk.
.Fall through floor of load.
.Happy Valley is saved. Harp is singing.
.Unload.
.
Vehicles ascend again back to load.
Exit:
. Speedramp exit.
.Exit through another cave in the cliffside.
Technical Details:
.Showbuilding is three stories high.
.Cliff on the outside closes in to a point, making it appear taller when meeting the clouds.
.Big drop takes place inside beanstalk shell. Beanstalk is open, allowing guests to see outside. This is masked and generally made to look nice through use of smaller vines that cover the opening in the face of the beanstalk. Think wrought iron fence.
.Giant Willie AA is static except for the face. Probably will not show full body. Hand elevator is obviously not seen, or attached to Willie.
Ride Vehicles:
Massive bread baskets pulled up by "rope cables" , intended to carry up the wealth of riches from the cloudy kingdom above.
Princess Fairytale Hall:
To make way for Sword of the Stone, the Princess Fairytale Hall has been relocated to the expansion plot along with Mickey and the Beanstalk.
The exterior is now an elegant Dutch manor, straight out of a fairy tale, fitting right in with the Fun and Fancy village nearby. Inside the manor, things are the same as ever. Three meet and greet areas allows park guests to meet and interact with some of Disney's finest princesses.
The corner of Fantasyland by Tomorrowland and Teacups is going to receive quiet the transformation; going from a rather awkward transition with Pooh, Teacups, and the Speedway, to a new quaint and quirky area to contrast the grander environments and experiences of Fantasyland. It will include the same iconic Mad Tea Party relocated and refurbished, and a new unique variation of Alice's Curious Labyrinth from Disneyland Paris.
Location:
The most drastic change will be location; most importantly, the Speedway will go bye-bye. However, majority of that land will be saved to give Tomorrowland something it deservedly needs, except for one parcel which will be reserved for this Wonderland area.
Before:
After:
As you can see, there's a new, more curved path between the former Speedway area of TL and the former Teacups area of FL, so Tomorrowland can no longer be seen right from Fantasyland. Also notice how Teacups is moved into part of the former Speedway plot, with the Labyrinth actually going around it.
Mad Tea Party
The Teacups will now be much more similar to DL's aesthetically, with colorful lanterns and teacups galore.
However, it will retain the roof for Florida weather, this time resembling the Paris version's clear roof.
The teapot centerpiece will actually no longer exist, mostly so riders will get a better view of the surrounding area.
Alice's Curious Labyrinth
This attraction may share a name with the Paris one, but it's much more in name only. In order to get this type of attraction to work operationally in MK's huge crowds, it will be much more of a walk through attraction, similar to Swiss Family Treehouse. The distinction here will be that there's a few different paths a guest could take, with different photo ops or effects.
The entrance is to the right of Mad Tea Party, and the maze actually goes around it, with the exit to the left and with great views of the attraction while riding the teacups. It starts off in a hedge maze, similar but slightly smaller than the Paris one.
After the hedge maze, guests enter a small cave, similar to the ones at Tom Sawyer Island. Inside there's some glowing mushrooms and such, and even the Cheshire Cat himself! The Chesire Cat is actually a projection, and using StoryMaker, interacts with guests! The cat will sometimes call a name ("Hello Steve, you seem to be a bit lost!"), or mention a location ("I don't think you're in Georgia anymore...").
Soon after, guests will pop at the exit, bringing them back to the Mad Tea Party. Around this exit will be where the Alice characters meet; Alice will usually be there, and with the Mad Hatter, Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum, or the White Rabbit accompanying her.
The Sword in the Stone: Arthur's Passage
https://youtu.be/0nIvZxSQazA
The latest chapter in Fantasyland's storied history brings Disney's classic 1963 film,
The Sword in the Stone, to life in this brand new dark ride, utilizing the latest in audio animatronic and projection mapping technology to create a memorable experience for guests. The two and a half minute attraction will be housed in the current Princess Fairytale Hall building, and will utilize simple 'mine cart' vehicles similar to that of its predecessor, Snow White's Scary Adventures.
Exterior & Queue:
The adventure begins at the foot of a brand new exterior, characterized by its distinct English style, complete with stone towers and chimneys, wooden columns and other distinct features. Two large trees stand on each corner of the building, and a massive purple dragon figure looms above the attraction's marquee. Guest's familiar with the film will recognize the dragon as Mad Madam Mim, the eccentric witch whom Arthur met in the forest. Guests travel through the turnstiles, along a simple queue and end up in the loading area, which features a colorful mural depicting the legend of the Sword in the Stone on one end and the adventures of Arthur and Merlin on the other. On the sword end, a silhouetted knight is seen tugging at the sword with a crowd of men gathered around him. On the other side, Arthur and Merlin are pictured having tea in Merlin's cottage, with Archimedes perched angrily nearby. Guests board the vehicles and are sent on their way.
The Attraction:
The ride itself is organized into 12 show scenes, each lasting roughly 15-20 seconds each.
The Forest
Guests find themselves in a dark forest, where a cranky Merlin animatronic figure is seen muttering to himself beside an old well. The vehicle travels along a forest trail and find Arthur retrieving an arrow for his foster brother, Kay. Nearby, a hungry wolf eagerly licks its chops, eyeing the wide-eyed child.
Higitus Figitus
The vehicle enters Merlin's cottage, where they find Arthur seated amidst a number of moving objects: books, chairs, teapots, etc. Merlin stands atop a large bucket as he conducts the items like an orchestra. The vehicle maneuvers through the cottage, out the back door, and toward a large castle.
Castle Corridors
The vehicle travels along a series of dark corridors and into a dining hall, where Sir Ector scratches his head in search for Arthur while Kay enjoys a turkey leg. The vehicle passes a window where they see Merlin's tower; a projection mapping effect simulates rain outside.
Castle Moat
The vehicle exits the castle via moat. Guests spot Merlin and Arthur standing alongside the banks of a pond. "Oh, Merlin, Sir, that's an awfully scary place for a fish to live," Arthur exclaims, as Merlin waves his wand in the air.
"That's What Makes the World Go Round"
The vehicle dips into the pond, 'underwater' and through a colorful world of fish and underwater plant life. Merlin and Arthur, who have become fish, sing "That's What Makes the World Go Round," as they wiggle amidst the scene. Projected bubbles and waves simulate the underwater world, much like the way Ariel's Undersea Adventure does.
Washing the Dishes
The vehicle climbs a small hill and reenters the castle. Guests find themselves in a room crowded with spinning dishes, pots and pans; Arthur gazes in amazement as Merlin makes the kitchen equipment wash itself. Guests are sprayed lightly with water as Merlin says "If ya think that's something, wait till I make you take to the skies!"
Flying With Arthur
Guests travel along another corridor where a pepper's ghost effect simulates Arthur being transformed into a bird. The vehicle then careens out a window and to the 'skies,' a dimly-lit room illuminated only by blacklight. Guests see only the peaks of large pine trees and thick, fluffy 'clouds' alongside the room. With a flash of light, guests find themselves in the cottage of Mad Madam Mim.
Mad Madam Mim's Cottage
The vehicle winds along an old stone cottage, where Mad Madam Mim is attempting to swat Arthur, who remains a bird, with a large broom. The vehicle turns a corner and guests find Merlin standing angrily across the room. "Now, Mim," he says sternly, "This has gone far enough. Time to end this the old fashioned way."
The Wizard Duel
The vehicle exits the cottage and guests find themselves in the middle of a climactic wizard duel. Mad Madam Mim is seen towering over a cliff; she has transformed into a fire-breathing dragon. Merlin, who is depicted as a frightened goat, can be seen atop the cliff. "Mim! See here, Mim, we agreed no dragons! No dragons!" he screams helplessly as projection mapped 'fire' lights up the scene. Upon turning a corner, however, we see that Merlin has emerged victorious, as the once-mighty dragon has been defeated by Merlin, who has transformed into a germ. "Ya see, boy, brain over brawn, just like I told you." Arthur and Archimedes smile proudly atop a tree as the vehicle turns another corner toward a crowded village.
The Tournament
A tournament is underway in the distance, depicted by a hand-painted mural. Guests see Arthur nestled beside an old Inn. "Kay's sword, I forgot it, Archimedes!" Archimedes hovers above the figure. "Look boy," he says. "Over there!"
The Sword from the Stone
In the attraction's pivotal scene, the vehicle enters a snowy courtyard, where Arthur pulls the glowing sword from the stone to the praise of several onlookers, one of which exclaims "This boy is our king!" Sir Ector and Kay bow respectfully as light beams down from the ceiling, bathing Arthur in a stream of golden light.
The End:
The vehicle enters the final show scene in the attraction. Arthur is seated happily on the throne; Archimedes is perched alongside him. Crowds outside chant "Heil, King Arthur! Long Live the King!" as Merlin, decked out in his Bermuda outfit, is seen beside an axe and shield. "I knew you had it in you, ma boy! King Arthur! King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table! Unless, of course, err, you'd rather have a square one." The vehicle turns one last corner and reenters the loading area, where a final mural depicting the sword in the stone bids guests farwell.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, Phase 3 of New Fantasyland is the grandest of them all. Not only has all of Old Fantasyland been renovated and redesigned, but a new expansion plot has been used to create a show-stopping E-ticket.
We hope that with this expansion, guests hearts will remain forever young here..
In New Fantasyland.
