The Great Paper Napkin Watch

I am very happy to say that I have been at MK all day today and I have NOT seen 1 coke cup anywhere. Where ever we go they have only had the red Disney Parks cups. On the other hand the plain brown costco napkins are everywhere.

I exchanged a few emails with WDW concerning the napkins. After some generic replies, I finally received one stating the printed napkins were changed to plain napkins as a cost cutting measure. It appears the plain brown napkins are here to stay.

They are only napkins o_O

I am aware that they have always been there and add that extra bit of detail but to be realistic it is only a peice of paper to wipe your hands and mouth on. And now they are eco friendly.

When they remove napkins completely and make you wipe your hands on your shirt is when people should start complaining.

wow, I'm surprised that they actually even admitted that. They could at least emboss them like McDonalds does along with every other cheap place.

My kids will be devastated! All they ever talk about is getting to wipe their hands and face while they are in WDW.

But seriously, that does suck a little. I always enjoy getting to see how Disney brands itself in small, unique ways. The cups and napkins were just one of the many layers of minuscule details that separate Disney from all the rest. I understand the reasoning behind why this was done but I hate to see them (officially) go. I think the real reason this is disheartening to people isn't just about some paper cups and napkins, it's about a (very tiny) piece of something much bigger.

I'm over the loss of cute napkins. It was great while it lasted, but it is over. Have to move on. Que sera, sera. Have to live with remembering the good old days...like so many things in WDW.

But they do suck, as napkins go. They don't absorb spills. They're not very good at wiping even minorly sticky stuff (like ketchup) up. Napkins that will simply be utilitarian items should at least BE that.

Thanks.

WDW still persisting on its course to becoming the least classy place in America then. Bah. Such a shame, what with them still being able to open a beautiful new park area.

But why should we understand that they are gone? We are the customers. It is up to WDW to understand and please us, not the other way round.

Me, I perfectly understand that if WDW doubles its prices and slashes its offerings in half, that it will see a big increase in profits. But why should my understanding of this mean in the slightest way that I should feel some sympathy for it. Why should it mean the slightest resignation to it.

Why should a Disney customer identify with Disney the corporation, instead of identifying with a Disney customer?

In one of my emails, I mentioned embossing (no ink, eco-friendly, etc.) but the person who replied admitted this was done purely as a cost-cutting measure. Although I was disappointed with the decision, I did appreciate receiving what I considered to be an honest response.

I didn't even care about the napkins/coke cups but I still find it sad that the cut it purely to cut costs. Am a shocked? Not a wit. But it's still sad. :( Though that's pretty amazing you got an honest response. Props to whatever CM gave you a real answer instead of the generic company line.

Can you post this e-mail? I would love to see them actually admit this.

In my earlier post when I said I understood the reasoning behind the decision, I didn't mean I supported it or sympathized with it. I can, however, totally see how a group of people only looking at shortsighted ways to cut business cost would come to this conclusion.

I am bumping the napkin watch thread.

I'm not sure if there have been any other Disney napkin sightings at the resorts, but amid all the plain napkins everywhere at Disneyland, Wine Country at California Adventure has little white Disney Parks napkins!

That is why God gave men jeans and jean shorts to wipe hands on. Or you can use the back of your kids shirts when the wife is not looking.
