The Great Movie Ride- What's Up??

For me, it's still the best attraction in The Studios, followed closely by Muppet-Vision 3-D. If I only make it on The Great Movie Ride once a trip I feel like I've missed something. Now if they could just move that stupid Hat (or nuke it from orbit...it's the only way to be sure) to uncover their REAL best kept Disney secret.

Ho-ho-hold on, hold on one second. This installation has a substantial dollar value attached to it!

:ROFLOL:THAT was a really good one, I'm still ROTFL.

As some have already posted, the GMR is about classic movies and not about the last 5, 10 or 15 years blockbusters.

I somewhat disagree with that. While the majority of the films represented are from the 40s and 50s, GMR is not about current movies anymore because the ride hasn't been updated since it opened. When it opened:

Great Movie Ride Opening Date: May 1, 1989
Alien Movie Release Date: May 25, 1979 (10 year old blockbuster)
Raiders of the Lost Ark Release Date: June 12, 1981 (8 year old blockbuster)

Add on to that fact that since 2000 Disney has been taking classic attractions and force-feeding their own films into them (The Seas with Nemo being a great example here). It tells me that GMR has just been ignored.

I personally loved the GMR last year because I love classic movies and many of them showed up in the ride. Yes, the animatronics aren't as good as they could be, but the set designs are great. If you have a good cast member leading you, I think it is an excellent ride. The GMR belongs in DHS more than any other ride.

I love GMR, but agree that it needs a serious overhaul. It used to be a "must see" everytime we went to the Studios, but now - not so much. The opening scene - Footlight Parade - hasn't worked in YEARS! I remember when it moved, there was water and bubbles. I think that they need to invest a little in bringing it back to the great attraction it used to be. Just my 2 cents.......

If they do ever remove the hat (which I really hope they won't because I think it's fab!) then this ride really will need to be updated. I agree that the films don't need to be changed, they are all fab films, but they just need to be updated with new effects. And I would love to see some more recent films in there.

Lord of the Rings would be top of my list for additions. Perhaps with Star Wars (I know they have the Star Wars ride but the first 3 films were a HUGE hit!) Gladiator is another film that I just think is amazing! There are some new films that I think will last just as long as the films that are already featured and I think that they deserve some recognition!!

That's my two pence worth!!!

I think if they were going to aqquire liscences for films like The Dark Knight/Gladiator, they would have attractions completely devoted to them. I just couldn't see Disney aqquiring blockbuster franchises and only using them in GMR. (However, AE was meant be Alien, did that pre-date GMR, or the other way round, my chronology is not the best). We know how Disney has shut things down to be 'family friendly', that could lead to GMR 2: Nania. I don't understand the hype over the films, if i wanted to see a bunch of toffs with swords i'd go to a fencing class. As much as i love The Godfather (who doesn't?) i don't think Disney would consider putting it in these days.

I for one, after inital like as a 9 year old, then dislike as a 11-15 year old, now enjoy it, i think the fact that some of the AA is a bit outdated gives the ride a charm. The sets appear flawless. Scrap IASW instead :drevil:.

I just hate what's it's become lately. The script changes are downright abysmal. It's been "updated" at least twice in certain scenes in the past few years for no reason other than what seems to be some imagineer wanting to say 'Look, I changed something'. It's especially bad in the gangster scene where the timing of the show scene's effects (The can shaking, the animatronics talking, etc) are the same as they were when the park opened, but they force the cast to cram far too many words in between them now, trying to add pointless exposition that just gets lost on the audience. You end up having no idea what they're saying most of the time. Plus, the costumes are completely generic now. We go from a golden age of Hollywood time period to a blazer. Wow, they must've spent weeks planning that out. At least the gangster's aren't wearing polos and khakis yet. The ride deserves a proper update. The 30s/40s theme is what the Studios was built around and I love it. It was nice to see part of that style still alive in the attraction, but it's obvious they want a much more modern design these days for the park (hence the new costumes). I'm sure they're just itching to get rid of the ride, or at least the old films in it. It's just a question of when the money and a plan will come together.

I'm fine with the selection of films that are featured in it, I just wish they would plus it a bit with updated special effects. The Alien scene, for example, is woefully neglected. And they need to do something about those cast members. On our last trip, we sat right up front, next to the CM. It was excruciating. He was bombing with the audience, and he knew it. Flop sweat was everywhere. It really made me not want to go on the ride again.

I agree...I would probally LOVE this ride if we could get a good CM.:dazzle:
This ride more than any other can be blown by a cast member.
I think it's a 30/50 split between good and bad cast members, with another 20 being simply awful.

You'd think there would be some sort of standards for this.
