the glass monument thing in front of Spaceship Earth

Yes! Thats why as nice as the palms next to SSE are, I do miss the oaks a bit. Too bad they didn't save them and out them over in FW East. :(

In all honestry, something else that contributes to that meh look of FW East are the pavilions themselves. As stunning as M:S is, the clean, simple lines of Horizons were much more conducive to the overall desgin of the area. The swoops and arches of M:S are great, but its hard to make them fit in with the straight angles of FW East. Also, that metal structure at the entrance to TT? Yeah, the only place that look works is in a scrap yard. Everytime I see that thing, the more I begin to wish it wasn't there. It completely ruined the sleekness of the pavilion. Not to say it alone has ruined the look of the pavilion, but it is the biggest and most notable thing.
YES!:sohappy::lol:

Space should be over in FW W with Earth and Sea...Air/ Weather too. :)

The old Space pavilion would have looked MUCH better...(notice how it uses the Horizons building)

And yeah, TT's banners singns and "awning" reeeally need to go. Makes it look like the pav is under a constant refurb.:hurl:

Same for JII's.

I know. Soon though.;)
Goodness gracious! Is everything in that picture to scale, because it it is, that would hae been a HUGE pavilion! Wow...

That's most likely why it was scrapped.:( It was supposed to be MUCH more immersive as well...Had a Omnimover...:(

I think I was in part to blame for spreading this about - it isn`t Horizons. Whilst Century3 may have derived from this design, The Space Pavilion as pictured is from 1978. The later version appears to suggest the building was more symmetrical in depth too as opposed to Horizons long and thin design.

The art is a bit deceiving; kind of drawn with a long lens not to mention playing on forced perspective. The show building itself was smaller than SSE.

Hm. Do you happen to have anything else about this pavilion that never was, like what was to be in it, design features, etc? I'm intrigued... :D

Oh, and I can nderstand that it probably wasn't going to be as big as it appears in the picture, though it does look like someone took SSE and plopped it behind Horizons in that concept art.

Ah...I must have got that wrong from your tribute.:( Sorry!:(

There was a time though when Space WAS going to use the Horizons building, right?

Yes indeed, in the early 90`s a retrofit of Horizons was proposed.

Seeing that they never built the whole Omnimover/Spacewalk thing...AND MS is MUCH smaller than Horizons, why didn't they use the building? It would have softened the blow of loosing the attraction IMHO.

And I LOVE that vid, Martin...One of your best.;)

just wait for the CoP ultimate tribute vid...and there will be more information and material stuffed into that one video than an entire set of videodiscs at EPCOT Computer Central :hammer: :sohappy:

And Central, yeah we know. Personally, I would like to see the flag pole back in the heart of Epcot instead of at the entrance. There's too much concrete on that main path between FW and WS. Imagine a planter shaped like the old EPCOT Center logo with the flag in the middle. I think that would look pretty neat. :)
If they are going to put the flagpole in the park they better get flags for ALL the countries. The fact that they just have an American Flag at the entrance always bothered me.

Hm. Good point. However, if memory serves me correctly, the reason you never see the flags of the countries in Epcot is because of the customs surrounding each flag (i.e. if/when it should be lowered, when it flies at half staff, etc.). Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but because of that, it was decided early on that the flags would not be displayed.

Yep, that's correct. But this brings up a interesrting question...Why don't ANY of the Country's have signs? WS does not even have a marquee...nor does FW.

It's just a little fact that has always bothered me.:lookaroun

Sorry to interrupt.... But getting back to the original thread topic. As far as I was told by one of the original owners of MouseSurplus back in the day, The Lucite sculptures from the fountain were sold to a car dealership in Arizona for $10,000. I dont know if that was for one or all of them.
Ok back to your normal EPCOT Center Chatter.

I have to ask... What monument? I went to WDW as a child in 1976 and then not again until I took my own children in '98 so I pretty much missed the glorious beginnings of Epcot. Does anyone have a link to a photo of the monument you are talking about?
