The Gaming Industry: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

There was a time when I thought I would not need HD and that a 120 GB hard drive was overkill.:D
Man, I remember when I got my Mac SE/30 back in college and paid like $1000 extra to go from 1 to 4 MB of RAM and from a 40 MB hard drive to an 80 MB hard drive. Maybe it was more than $1,000 actually. The other nerds thought I was crazy to get the extra 40 megs! Lol! I was on a waitlist for months to get that computer. After having it for a year, I sold it to another kid for more than I paid for it. Those were the days!

That they were. I remember when paying $1 per meg for a hard drive was considered a good deal. That first 211 meg hard drive I purchased cost me for than a 4 TB running at 4 times the speed would today.

The PS4 is a good system (I would go with the Pro, but that is me) and online gaming is free on that system where the Xbox requires a yearly $60 subscription

I believe the PlayStation 4 requires a PlayStation Plus membership in order to play online. It's $49.99 a year USD.

I remember my dad snagged two 1.3 gig drives back in the mid 90s from his work. Never knew a day when I thought I would need more storage than that with DOS and Windows 3.1 or even 95.

You are correct.

I am an Xbox guy so I am going off old info.

The PS4 is a good system (I would go with the Pro, but that is me) and online gaming is free on that system where the Xbox requires a yearly $60 subscription, but if the controller was the deciding factor, there are adapters that will allow you to use pretty much any controller on any system as well as third party controllers of every conceivable shape and size.
Both PlayStation and Xbox require a $60 subscription for online. Soon the Switch will also have a subscription for $20.

PC is the last platform with free online.

Edit: nvm. I should read all posts before making a reply

I enjoy PC gaming, but it is not for the faint of heart.

One nice thing about consoles is the whole "they just work" factor.

But yeah pop a disk in, download the latest patches and you're good to go. No fiddling with finding the best settings of performance and visuals. No finding out that studio X sold out to the other graphics card manufacturer so your beast system under performs.

Yeah...I don't miss that at at all.

It certainly beats the DOS day where you spent several hours modifying your config files to squeeze every last ounce of power out of that 120 MHz your little 486 had. Back in those days I use to make boot disks for my games.

But that's the fun part! :)

Probably not fun for most people, I suppose. And do I see subtle shade being thrown at Nvidia and their "the way it's meant to be played" thing with certain games?

I kind of like messing with settings and seeing the results play out when I reload the game. Although more and more I keep having to remind myself my system is old and Ultimate just isn't going to be possible anymore.

Maybe..... :angelic:
Honestly it's a bit of a poke at both. AMD in recent years has made several deals that really hurts nVidia consumers. I've owned both and honestly I can't say I've really preferred one over the other. Only reason I use nVidia right now is for G-Sync.

Aw. I know that feel. Sometimes I think I have more fun setting up a game than actually playing it. The amount of time I've spent making a hundred plus mods all work at once in Skyrim is a testament to that.

I'm an AMD pleb myself, so I suppose I wouldn't notice the other side. I'd really like to switch to nVidia, but I don't have the budget for it, and my r9 280x has held up shockingly well to this day. It's only recently started showing its age. I do get the impression, though, that Arkham Knight would probably run much better if only I had an nVidia brand card. Wonder why...

I thought Arkham Knight was just plain crap on PC all around with a shoddy port.

It was at launch, but, from my understanding, a hundred patches later, it should run just fine. 'course, since I only bought it on sale a year or two after the fact, I can't speak for the changes. It runs alright at lower settings for me, which I expected. I'm just talking about the nVidia branding on the game.

I am about a 60/40 split in favor of nVidia. My current system has a pair of AMD 7700s that work fine, but Borderlands plays a little nicer with nVidia.

As fate would have it all three competing home consoles are now under my roof. I have a Switch, my brother a PS4 and now also an Xbox One S. Why did he buy the Xbox you ask? He wanted a 4K Blu Ray player.

Oh well. At least I might be able to play Cuphead now. He got the Halo bundle so I can also try that out if I want.

Has anyone played Star Wars Battlefront 2?

Couple of questions if so,

Is it graphic? i.e. blood etc

Is it a game that is still fun to play if you don’t play online?

All of the “pay” nonsense, does that have an impact on an enjoyable experience for an average player?

I can buy the console, or the console + SW for the same price. The better value obviously sounds like it would be SW, but I’ve heard and read a lot of bad things about the game.

If you can get the console plus game for the same price as the console then there's really no reason not to get it. While I haven't played the release version myself I have followed it's progression.

It's graphic in a way that the characters react to being shot. They flinch and react to the locations that were hit but there is no blood that I've seen.

From my experience in the Alpha and Beta it's fun. The character classes that were added are a nice change from the generic of the first game. The gun play got a bit better and space combat is loads of fun.

The Pay part of the game has been disabled right now. Those who got in the early week and bought into it will have an advantage over you starting out but it should slow everyone else progression.
