The Gaming Industry: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

I know I’m late with this but the big news from today concerns Mega Man. Not only was Mega Man 11 announced for all platforms, a Mega Man X collection was also announced as well as a Switch version of the previously released Legacy collections.

I’m sure many lost their minds today like I did back at E3 concerning Metroid

I was shocked that Capcom decided to support the Switch, honestly. However, it would still take more from them for me to give them more of my money. They are still dead to me. They've neglected / killed too many franchises across multiple platforms for me to support them now.

If you need all those sports games then don’t get a Switch. EA has some weird thing with Nintendo lately since the Wii U and since they have the exclusive rights to Madden that means no football. Sony has an exclusive series of MLB games you might enjoy.

I don’t care much for sports myself.

Yeah, EA has put EA Sports titles on mobile devices but only FIFA on the Switch so far. However, the switch hasn't even been out for a year yet, so it's possible something could make it's way. NBA2K is there from Take 2. My uneducated guess is that EA will bring NBA Live and then maybe Madden.

Sony's 'The Show' series is a must play, if you are a baseball fan. Huge amount of content and game modes.

If the question was PS4 vs Xbox, I'd think you'd have to go where the games are and that's on PS4. And that's coming from someone with a Xbox 1S, PS4, Switch (& other legacy systems). :D:geek:

Oh that’s good to know. Thanks! The guy at the store did a demo of some Arms game for me. I know my son would love it. They did have a baseball game, but only RBI.
My son’s request was a game system with Christiana Ronaldo FIFA Special Edition. (Which Switch does have), Madden, a Baseball game that you play without a controller, a “shooting game”, and Minecraft.
He already has Minecraft on his tablet, and he’s not old enough for the “shooting games”.
I didn’t want to get him another game system until he was 12 (we have a Wii now).. mainly because of the content of games and the worry of the “live” aspect. Unfortunately though, it’s the ONLY thing that he wrote on his letter to Santa, so I’m stuck.

Here’s the upsides I see to Switch (please correct me if I’m wrong)-
1. Better motion reliability than PS4.
2. Easier parental controls.
3. Mario games that he already enjoys.
4. Age appropriate game choices.
5. Comes with 2 controllers.
6. Only accessories I would need is the wheels for Mario Kart.

Here’s the downsides I see-
1. No Madden.
2. Left controller has some connectivity issues ( according to Game Stop sales guy, but he says an update should be coming)
3. Lack of preowned games available for sale.

Thoughts?
I think you have the Pros for the Switch down. I can't speak to the parental controls but there is an smartphone app that can be setup to do that.

And you're right on two of the cons, IMO. I think there have been some firmware updates (& hardware in newer versions) that have rectified the left joy-con connection issues.

I guess the question for you is how important is Madden.

The Switch also has an appropriate shooting game for your son in Splatoon 2.

I haven’t gotten into it but it’s gotten pretty popular so you could give it a shot. When you feel he’s more mature you can graduate him to DOOM which is what I’m currently playing :)

This is obviously fan made to celebrate the Switch version of the game but it gets the point across. It’s also frickin’ hilarious how it’s put to Mario music :hilarious:

Splatoon 2 has become one of my most played games recently. And this is with me still working on BoTW and Odyssey. Nintendo's output this year has been great. I don't see how they can keep up this pace for the next year.

Who’s excited for possible announcements tonight at the Game Awards?

Who do you want to win GotY and the other categories?

Thanks so much for the input guys... I’ve been buried in reviews for a few days now, as well as 2 visits to chat with Game Stop employees.

I think the Switch looks fun, but my kid doesn’t need a handheld device, and the lack of sports games is concerning. We still have our Wii that he can do motion games on.
I’ve decided on the PS4.

Now I’m trying to find deals!! So far none appear to exist. There are deals on the XBox One, but I held both the PS4 and Xbox controllers in my hand, this is one of the reasons that I chose Sony, I think the controller will be easier for a child.

Get Crash Bandicoot. It’s one game that I really, really, really want.

Just FYI...I would not let a controller dictate your console as there are a myriad of third party controllers in every shape and size out there for every console.

Thanks! I was looking at that or Plants vs Zombies.. but that game is very different than the one on his iPad. The video game is rated Teen. Star Wars Battlefront is also rated Teen.

I think i’ll go with Crash Bandicoot and the FIFA18 Christiano Ronaldo Edition.
As much as I talked about Madden and MLB, I don’t want kiddo to start with more than 2 games.

882,000 copies... That’s downright terrible for a game of this caliber.

What can we learn from this? Consumers have the ultimate power.

That sounds crazy.. every game system I’ve looked at has a Call of Duty bundle. I thought it must be extremely popular.

Oh.. please don’t confuse me. I’ve lost days of my life researching game systems and reading reviews.lol. I’m hoping that I picked the correct one.

You won’t regret it :)

I loved the Crash games growing up and the new collection is right up my alley. The only problem is this sort of “will they or won’t they” situation regarding the game coming to other consoles. There’s never been a definitive answer and there’s tons of rumors that it’s only a timed 1 year exclusive.

The sales are for Star Wars, not Call of Duty. Call of Duty did 4.4 million.

The PS4 is a good system (I would go with the Pro, but that is me) and online gaming is free on that system where the Xbox requires a yearly $60 subscription, but if the controller was the deciding factor, there are adapters that will allow you to use pretty much any controller on any system as well as third party controllers of every conceivable shape and size.

Ah, ok. They sell that bundle too. It’s frustrating, console is $299, console plus call of duty or Star Wars, also $299. But I can’t use either of those games.

The controller, ease of setup/parental controls and MLB baseball were my three main factors.
As far as the pro, I would buy a PS4 500gb if they still sold them new.lol. I don’t need 4K and I don’t need 1tb storage.
I should add, and I don’t know if this is true or not, but I have read that PlayStation has a better selection of games.

There was a time when I thought I would not need HD and that a 120 GB hard drive was overkill.:D

Ha ha. This is true, and I could see that happening in time. Unfortunately it looks like I’m stuck with the 1tb anyway as it looks like any new 500gb consoles are long gone.
