The Gaming Industry: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

So an interesting tidbit is that DICE / EA is saying that the current loot box model and currency earning rates are what they are because of the change away from payed DLC and Premium packages that previous games had. SWBF2 will have periodic free content updates for the planned life of the game. It's trading one crummy system for another.

A huge Black Friday deal is from Gamestop. They are having the I7 Alienware Steam Machine on sale for $375.00. Thats an incredible deal, that unit is normally $750. If you swap out the terribad Steam OS to Windows 10, you have a seriously above average gaming PC, it chews up current AAA titles at 60 FPS. But ONLY the I7 version of the Steam Machine, totally avoid the cheaper I3 version, thats nothing more than a expensive paper weight.

So on point. So very, very on point.

I'm usually wary of his politics, but he captures the greed of the new implementation of loot boxes.

He's spot on, especially about these being relatively new, it's not the same as DLC, loot boxes are the publishers seeing just how far they can go with the public before the public wises up.

I'm glad BF2 is getting some pushback at least.

I hope the game flops so bad that EA goes on the verge of shutting down THQ style and when they come groveling at the gamer’s feet for help all we do is give them a loot box that has a 0.000000000000000000000...(1 million more 0’s)...00001% chance of containing the help they need and if they don’t get it they can pay for more chances.

But dreams don’t always come true do they.

I can’t believe i’m saying this but I think I’m actually gonna hold out on buying BFII for the foreseeable future. I would have never considered that before as Star Wars pretty much owns me. I’m just getting so sick of this nonsense though. Now if I can only follow through with that i’ll actually be pretty pleased with myself.

Sadly the game will sell a ton and nothing will change. This is going to be a remake of the classic MW2 boycott when that released.

Apparently they made it not as grindy. Still not good enough in my opinion.

After getting the first Battlefront for $40 like 2 months after release and dumping 6 hours into it before being bored, I'm not going to waste my time with BF2 at all. It's sad because Frostbite is a great engine and can have good gameplay. But when Dice gets forced to do this stuff with it, the game is ruined completely. Then on the other end, I bought Titanfall 2 for $30 on impulse. The free content and great dev support made me dump an additional $40 on "premium" content I really didn't care for but I wanted to support good devs. But now, RIP Respawn.

Unfortunately one game flopping wouldn't bring EA down. The vocal minority online is probably around 300k against the game. SWBF2 could sell around 4 to 5 million copies. Those boycotting are a small drop in the bucket for them.

Flop games seem to hurt developers more than publishers anyway. I doubt EA felt Andromeda but Bioware sure did.

Yeah they cut down the amount of credits needed for the Heroes by a lot but that doesn’t change the fact that they tried to get away with it. If their intentions really were for the players they wouldn’t have tried it in the first place.

Have you hear any reports of how long the single player campaign is?

So LevelCap has said it took him 5 hours to play through the single player. I may dust off my Xbox to rent this one. Even with the changes they are making to the amount of credits you need I'm not enthusiastic as I was during my time in the alpha and beta.
