Rumor The EPCOT Hotel

I’m dead against anything being placed in the parking lot. The area is a perfect reveal from toll plaza to SSE. It shouldn’t be destroyed for profit. I’d rather keep the tombstones, not that we should have to choose.

There’s plenty of resort designated plots left in WDW. Stick it there.

But if you truly wanted to build an EPCOT hotel, anything other than front entrance would seemed 'tacked on'. It should look like it always belonged there. I vote for either the entrance, or Innoventions.

I feel Innoventions would be awkward. I'm trying to imagine an entrance in the middle of the park and I think it'd be weird for people already in the park. Then you'd need a connector running between the two buildings. You could connect them either in front of SSE or behind. Unless it's very carefully pulled off, it'd probably look off.

Personally, front and center or off to a corner (bus/seas area) are the only ways to do this right. Even though I think this is neat in all sort of ways, I don't think this is right.

The blessing of size and the irrational nature of the average consumer do not always align.

They built AKL literally 5 minuets farther away from from MK, DHS and Epcot than your average resort and many people act like the thing is on another continent. People want to walk out of their front door and into a park.
Very true. And a good reason why the monorail resorts are at a higher price point.

I can completely understand why Disney would want to capitalize on the situation, but there is a certain charm and beauty in the design of the monorail resorts and their proximity to MK. Same for The Boardwalk Resorts (BC, BW, YC). The short stroll from the resorts to International Gateway is very pleasant and allows for a bit of excitement to build up. Same for the short monorail ride from the MK resorts. While exiting a resort a being immediately in the park has a certain appeal to it, I agree with @marni1971 that it would be destroying beauty for profit.

OR just don't build it because sometimes a square peg doesn't need to go in a circle hole. Sure it would be cool, but it would throw off the scale of Spaceship Earth. Once again completely ignoring the design and detail that went into the park in 1982. I swear it's like these people see the parks original buildings as just garbage and they somehow need to work around them when nothing they build will come close.

Not that they couldn't do it but they have yet to prove they can.

That's like saying "You can't improve on Disneyland - don't you dare design a hotel to go in front of it." And yet Paris works really well.

I feel like a lot of the push back here quickly resorts to "don't do it at all". I get that this is your opinion. But if you HAD to design an EPCOT hotel, wouldn't the best place be at the entrance? Not some plot of land off to the side?

I think a lot of the "don't do it at all" comes from things in the past like the abomination that is called Imagination. If they HAVE to do it...I really, REALLY hope they do it right, with balance, consideration for design and location, and care.

I don't think those are qualitys the current company posses often.

Placement is important, but for me, the design of this Epcot Resort is going to be crucial. I think it's simple - anything taller than the existing monorail station is too high. Keep it under 5 stories and there's actually good potential for a new gateway area that could enhance the park entrance and complement SSE.

Unfortunately, Disney seems to have developed a penchant for building high-rise additions that do a poor job integrating with their surroundings (Bay Lake Tower at the Contemporary; Villas at Grand Floridian; the new towers at Caribbean Beach and Coronado Springs). All of these dwarf the existing buildings and exhibit poor scale and/or bland architecture, the last things we need for Epcot's entrance.

It's this recent history that has me worried...

EDIT: @britain's render is a case in point. THAT could work. But I'm afraid we're going to end up with a Bay Lake Tower unceremoniously perched above the turnstiles.

Maybe people don’t like it since it’s another nail in EPCOTs design in the name of profit.

Change should be for the better. Not for the elite few who can afford a room.

Have you had a chance to see the proposed design yet? Just curious whether you are only against the idea itself or also hate their design choice. I can visualize several ways where the execution actually improves and compliments the reveal of SSE.

Edit: Like what @britain posted. Not that you have to tell me that’s the proposal, but do you hate that concept too?
