The dangers of a first floor room

Just got back from a 4-night stay at the Boardwalk. Had a nice room on the first floor with a pleasant view of the courtyard between the hotel proper and the garden suites. However, there was one very strange episode that has me rethinking ever accepting a first floor room again. One night, I went to bed around 11. I was awakened at about 11:30 by a loud pounding. Having just awakened, I was a bit disoriented, but thought it sounded like someone at the door, so I went to check. No one there. Then, more pounding, and this time I could tell it was coming from the back door to the patio. I opened the curtains to see a very angry looking woman. When she saw me (obviously not the person she was expecting), she turned bright red and quickly slunk away. I did yell "thanks for waking me up", but didn't see the point in doing anything else. So I guess I should just remind everyone that if you're going to try to get into your first floor room through the back entrance, be absolutely sure you know which room is yours.

Stayed on the first floor at Boardwalk our patio opened onto the Boardwalk right next to the DVC walk through villa it was very loud every night till about 11 but the view was cool wouldnt do it again but no worries:p

We had a group of frogs "serenading" us on our first floor patio at OKW on our first visit in 1993. It was kind of funny, actually, but weird. There was a torrential rainstorm and they all came out of the woodwork! :ROFLOL:

Oh that was so confusing.................... In the UK a first floor room would refer to a room on the first floor ABOVE the ground floor. Just wondering how someone could knock on your patio doors if its 20 feet off the ground
This reminds me of something I did years ago..
I've been posting on Disney forums for 4-5 years now. In my 1st year of it, there was a thread similar to this. I just couldn't get a grip on what people were telling me!

Sidenote: Are you very superstitious about the number 13 in the U.K.? I ask because in many places in the U.S. skyscrapers will leave out a thirteenth floor, in terms of numbering. Although, there is one building that I can think of that has a thirteenth floor.:animwink:
Some people are very superstitious in the UK. I, personally am not. I'm reluctant to break a mirror... or use the number 13, but I'm not bothered about most things. Some airplanes don't have a row 13 either.

On the subject of 1st floors... throughout August 2007 we stayed at Courtyard by Marriott at LBV (just outside DTD). We were given a 1st floor room, as we simply don't care where we are put. We go in to the room, start to unpack the suitcases, have a coffee, you know.. like you do after an 8 hour flight. I go to put something on the coffee table, and there is this great big lizard sat there looking at me. My Mother and I ran in to the other room and sent my father to get a room change. We were moved to the 3rd floor. Whew.

We will now not stay in the 1st floor rooms at a motel, as anything can just walk in under the door. We prefer the hotels with the doors (enter your key to enter) where you have to pass to get in. Much better.

Pretty strange having a crazy lady turn up at your door... not sure what I'd have done!

I had a first floor room at POFQ in July and had no issues except for (and this had nothing to do with first floor or not) the sounds of pleasure coming from the room next door at about 2 in the morning. It was loud enough to wake us up and and man was she loud :ROFLOL:

It's nice when you hear the Water pagent or the Magic Kingdom Fireworks going off just to open the sliding doors and walk over to the beach for a better view.

The patio doors have double locks so my wife and I feel pretty secure at night.

I also love to have my morning coffee on the first floor patio.

Me too! I love having a first floor room at the Polynesian just for those reasons...it doesn't get any better than that! :)

Hey, I stayed in a 3rd floor room, and a hooker knocked on my door at 3am... It doesn't get much more, um, interesting than that:lookaroun!!

Talk about room service!!!

My brother was freaked out about sleeping in a tent at FW. He insisted the armadillos were going to crawl in.
I've never seen an armadillo at Disney. I think at that time he was much more likely to wake up to a peacock than an armadillo.

Ah, the peacocks at FW...

I always liked the rooms on the first floor. We stayed at the Wilderness Lodge on the first floor numerous times and it was so nice to just walk out to the pool.

I was just thinking the other day about our first few stays at OKW, which was in 1993. The frogs were crazy back then! We have video of hundreds of frogs singing to us for days on end. We've noticed on our last few stays at OKW that the frogs are much quieter than back in the day!

I don't like ground floor rooms -- never have.

We once stayed at the Caribbean Beach and woke up to a loud pounding noise and disoriented, we freaked out. Opened the door but no one was there. It was then we discovered it was actually a balloon that had gotten caught in the ceiling fan -- it made a loud thumping noise that sounded like someone trying to break in or a gun shot!!

LOL :ROFLOL::ROFLOL::ROFLOL: We laughed so hard!!

Granted, no one really broke in, but I always get that feeling like someone could, whenever I'm in a motel-like room (with the doors on the outside) or on a ground-floor room at a hotel.

Similar to the OP but not a 1st floor incident, at Pop one year we had someone call our room, ask for someone that wasn't us, then hang up several times. The last call the guy was really aggitated and started cursing at my hubby because he had the wrong room number and thought we were lying that whomever he was asking for wasn't there. Oooh, that fellow got an ear full from the old man! LOL! It was funny!!! This was part of our list of reasons to avoid staying in a value resort again if we could afford to avoid it. So far we've had better luck overall with other than value accommodations.

Do the deluxes and moderates NOT have phones? This could have happened at any resort on the property.

I guess I've been lucky. Whenever I stay at the Pop Century I'm usually towards the back, where it is nice and quiet. I guess I'll know in two weeks if that tradition is upheld.

Yes, that is so true! I often think about them! On that same trip, a bunch of us were sitting by the pool and one jumped into my tote bag! Scared the holy sugar out of me! Everyone had a good laugh at my expense! Looking back, it was pretty funny! They were almost like stalkers!
