Disco No Longer: The New Expedition Everest

I picked Animal Kingdom as my final park to work on for a variety of reasons. While I've never been to Florida, DAK definitely serves as the second most intriguing of the four WDW parks in my eyes, right behind Epcot for obvious reasons...

Much like how Epcot in its best incarnations focuses on the tried and true "Edu-Tainment" formula, I have a ton of respect for the way the Imagineers have crafted the Animal Kingdom park to be a flowing journey through a variety of different exotic landscapes (And an asphalt carnival...soon to go the way of Superstar Limo!) The amount of craft and detail put into every square inch of what I've seen of the park blows my mind. As something of an animal lover myself, I knew this park had a ton of potential, but enough problem areas to make coming up with ten different additions a relatively painless task.

The first addition I'll be dealing with should be obvious to anyone familiar with the park. To this day, Expedition Everest delivers one of the most dictionary-defining "epic" roller coaster experiences on the face of the earth thanks mostly to its larger than life mountain facade. That being said, there's been an elephant in the room that's been haunting the attraction for darn near a decade now. I'm talking about Disco Yeti. Get your groove on, ya'll!

MI0002237156.jpg

In addition to finally righting the wrong of the most hyped up AA in the history of Disney theme parks this side of the Hatbox Ghost not being able to physically move, I'm also going to be adding on an additional couple quick scenes to really complete the narrative. As of right now while the attraction is certainly among the best in the park, I feel like it leaves just a bit to be desired in terms of build up to the Yeti (granted this is coming from someone who hasn't been there in person...) These additions wont be largely significant, and act more as transitional scenes connecting the dots of the attraction's narrative.

The queue will receive general touch ups and enchantments, but will remain largely in tact as one of the most detailed and story orientated queues in all of WDW without needing a line of spoken exposition. I'm definitely not trying to broke what isn't fixed with this one!

Expedition_Everest_queue_at_Disneys_Animal_Kingdom.jpg

The cars and track will all receive extensive work, and the track will be replaced in problematic areas to make for a smoother overall experience. The trains will be repainted to a darker shade of brown with hints of mud. The steam effect as the train rolls in and out of the station will be completely reworked to be more effective and reliable.

ride%20c%20Train%20Unloading%20area_3.jpg

The first major addition will be an expansion to the backwards section of the ride. A lot of the track in this area will be completely reworked and extended to showcase a brand new set piece. After plummeting backwards in the darkness, guests come into a dimly lit cavern revealing the subterranean remains of a cave like civilization living among the mountain. While not explicitly stated, we are led to believe this is connected to the Herka Zhong monument we pass through on our way up to the peak of the mountain.

walt-disney-world-disneys-animal-kingdom-2013-expedition-everest-16.jpg

Upon closer inspection, we realize just how much the Yeti has destroyed these ruins. His claw prints are engraved into the stone walls everywhere. In a big scare moment of the ride, the obscured head of the yeti pops up from a cave ruin and loudly roars at us, prompting our train to move ahead forward for a brief chase in the darkness leading to the familiar shadow of the Yeti wrecking the track and the "big drop".

After completing the regular coaster cycle at the base of the drop, you are ready to see the new, non-Disco Yeti that Disney has in store for us. This Yeti is located in his usual cave, but his position and backdrop is significantly different. He's now standing directly on a ruined head of what was once a statue, with other collapsed relics in the background. Two pillars pop up behind him and he grabs hold, hoisting his body up slightly. As riders go by, he uses his upward position to lunge directly at them, with his trademark loud roar. And after that much improved close encounter, the trains come steaming back into the station. Hopefully this time the Yeti doesn't break!

"Roots: An All New Dining Adventure in the Tree of Life"

Continuing from Asia's big new addition of a completely overhauled Everest attraction, we move on over to Discovery Island for a total reworking of the Tree of Life interior.

"But Tiki...Tree of Life already has It's Tough to be a Bug" you say....

Well, that's definitely a fair point. The Bugs Life theater still draws in a number of crowds, thanks mostly to its prime real estate in the heart of the park's icon. To me, the film doesn't hold up for a variety of reasons. First off...well, it's a 3D film...and frankly those are become quickly dated in today's theme park climate especially with movie theaters now installing the "D-Box" technology to replicate the feeling of a motion simulator. That, and I've always found ITTBAB to be an attraction that was intense to a completely unnecessary degree.

I as an adult have apprehensions about going in there due to reasons of claustrophobia and personal space being invaded. Not since Alien Encounter has Disney devised an attraction that so quickly plunges the guests into darkness and a ton of scary imagery and sensory effects to go along with it. Don't get me wrong...Hopper and the spiders are cool and all, but I feel there's a major disconnect when it comes to the attraction's obvious target audience. For these reasons, the Bug's Life show will be scrapped and replaced by a highly themed and immersive dining experience that take you into the literal roots of the Tree of Life.

Many of the trails along ITTBAB's former queue will be maintained and spruced up, and will serve as scenic routes used for prime photo opportunities with the tree. The "Roots" restaurant will take place both in doors and outdoors, utilizing a large portion of the Tree of Life real estate in a creative and profitable way.

The menu will focus on a grab bag of different cuisine from Africa and Asia, and will have exotic items that you won't be able to find at other dining locations within those two lands. The combination of different cultures in the menu is meant to reflect the spiritual themes of the Tree of Life. In addition to the exotic, regular theme park fare such as hamburgers and mac n' cheese will be available on the kids menu and will also be available in larger portions for adults with less cultured pallets.

The interior of the restaurant takes place entirely in the former theater of ITTBAB and will maintain much of its cave like atmosphere. In addition to the cave ceiling, there will be a large variety of branches and roots growing from the ceiling to the floor, giving the location its namesake. In true Tree of Life fashion, a collection of different wild life will be carved into the branches.

The outdoor portions of the restaurant will be very limited and will call for a reservation. Guests sitting outdoors can get stellar views of the Tree of Life from a selection of different choice angles, all while being closely surrounded by the carved branches and trunk of the tree. Carved into a small cave is the Beastly Lounge, a nod to Beastly Kingdom. This is an adults only bar that is themed to a dragon, with the dragon's tail serving as the physical bar and the mouth of the dragon acting as a particular decorative tap.

Ellie's Conservation Station: A New Look for Planet Watch

465117116_640.jpg

From the start, this seemed like an all too simple way to add relevance back into the Conservation Station. Don't get me wrong, Rafiki is definitely a good mascot for the idea, but so much of Up is about the excitement, adventure, and preservation surrounding wild life that I couldn't resist. Plus, the park really needs some representation for South American animals.

The first major change is the way in which you get to the Conservation Station. The railroad will be replaced...for reasons you'll find out in a future presentation. For now, let's concentrate on what I'm deeming essentially a "Skyway" on Steroids.

The route up to island will now be taken via a simulated "hot air balloon" flight, which is in essence a souped up Skyway style chair lift ride. The cars will be on a continuous chain and designed to look just out of the movie...with guests sitting in a basket and about twenty balloons rising above them.

Of course the balloons won't really be what holds the cars up, and will instead be a more traditional chair lift wire, seeing all the different baskets with the multi colored balloons going to and from the island is sure to make for a pretty great photo op, if anything else.

Guests aboard the baskets also have the ability to turn the direction of their vehicles left or ride, affording them a completely panoramic view of Animal Kingdom.

The aviary on the island has been completely refurbished with fresh paint, new cages, and all new species of birds. Naturally, there will be a balloon stand on the island!

Around the conservatory guests can explore trails in the style of Paradise Falls. The storyline for this attraction is that Russell and Carl have started up the Conservation Station in Ellie's honor, using it as a place of refuge for rare and exotic birds the likes of their good friend "Kevin".

Up Easter Eggs will be abound. Guests can see the iconic mail box right outside the aviary.

Scene-001UpMarriedLife.jpg

There are also hidden remains of Muntz's collection of rare fossils hidden away in the paths. Dog collars with the speaking technology can also be found discarded, and emitting the squeaky "Alpha" voice in an incomprehensible way.

The traditional Carl, Russell, and Dug meet n' greet characters will be out and about here, but with a couple special surprises.

4404344128_70399af415.jpg

Dug's voice collar will work, and he'll be able to interact with the guests via an unseen cast member feeding lines based on the activity of the people around the dog. Expect many "Squirrel!" and "oh please, will you be my prisoner!" jokes.

Joining the trio will be a highly advanced AA of Kevin, who will be a free roaming Meet N' Greet character which will act much in the style of Lucky the Dinosaur but with far more realistic movements. An encounter with Kevin is definitely the highlight of any trip to Ellie's Conservation Station!

Harambe Railway

The curious thing about Animal Kingdom is that in spite of being the largest of all US Disney parks, it contains very few physical attractions. With this new addition, I hope to give more functionality to the 100 plus acres of real estate that the Safari Ride take up. Harambe Railway will be a scenic journey around the "berm" of Animal Kingdom's savanna, and will serve as a slightly smaller scale but still very much people pleasing new addition to compliment DAK's premier E-Ticket.

The general concept is fairly self explanatory. The same trains that once transported you to the Conservation Station will be re purposed into safari trains.

hqdefault.jpg

The track will be placed along the edges of the Safari's savanna, on a berm-like man-made rock structure that is painted to blend into each environment it passes. The train will offer a longer ride and a more appropriate use of one of Walt's favorite past-times, while the route up to Planet Watch as previously discussed has become a brand new adventure. Harambe Railway is sure to be a smashing success and an incredibly efficient "people-eater"!

For the final session, I'm going to cover Walt Disney World's second theme park:

Epcot:

Welcome to Epcot! Here, guests can explore the wonders of discovery, culture, adventure, innovation and of the universe itself. Walk past the giant sphere, Spaceship Earth and you'll find yourself on Epcot's Central Plaza. Around the Innoventions buildings will be flowing streams and swaying tall trees to give Epcot a greener look. The beautiful fountain will have the Epcot logos of the pavilions on it and the fountains get spectacular new water effects to truly stun the guests at the entrance. Innoventions West will be home to the Walt Disney Epcot Center Gallery. The gallery will show guests the original plans of Walt Disney, the Epcot that never was( with the movie pavilion, Spain pavilion etc.), the Epcot that is now and the Epcot that will be. Guests will be able to see artifacts from extinct rides, concept art of the park, production models, a presentation by Walt Disney himself( on a screen, telling about his plans for Epcot Center) and there will be a circlevision movie about the history of Epcot.
Also inside is a stairs that goes up to the new Future World Peoplemover. Here guests can board a pod similar to the ones seen on Normanisan Island in the Incredibles and transport themselves throughout Future World. The vehicles will stop at every Future World pavilion. Inside guests can hear an audio guide telling them about Epcot and its' meaning. The vehicles even enter a mega-sized hydrolator that acts as a sort of elevator going down past aquaria to SeaBase Alpha. The Circle of Life ride in the Land will become one of the stations for the Future World Peoplemover.
Then we move to the Energy pavilion. Here you can board the attraction, Universe of energy. By and large the attraction's impressive facade will remain unchanged save for a couple cosmetic touch ups. The building will receive a coat of dark blue paint to give it an updated appearance. In addition the solar panels on the roof will be more pronounced, and solar panels will also run down the sides of the building. Finally, the most notable new addition to the outside is a giant steel windmill with the attraction's sign proudly displayed in the middle, setting the tone for the energy theme. One of the things that's always been a bit off-putting about Universe of Energy is the amount of film you have to watch.

The first pre-show before entering the theater is more impressive, featuring the technology of hundreds of different rotating screens making up a single image. The film before the ride begins when you get into the theater was a little more on the dry side. For that reason we've decided to combine these two pre-shows. The rotating screens will be moved to the initial "theater" of the attraction, while the lobby will feature dramatic murals of landscapes such as ships sailing in the wind, cavemen making fire, and a host of solar powered windmills, as well as the primeval time period that gave us "fossil fuels". Also guests can play games on screens, where you have to catch sunlight, turn a watermill etc. Once you're inside the theater a new film using the rotating screens technology will be shown. This is essentially an up to date version of the ideas present in the old Universe of Energy film, placing emphasis on breakthroughs in energy technology since the attractions opening and trimming out the dated 80s look that plagued the original. We get to the iconic part of an attraction in a technique that makes the moving theater seats all the more dramatic and memorable.

Our host tells us about how here we got fossil fuels from, the creatures from the prehistoric ages. Following the rotating screen film, all the individual screens will reveal themselves and pull back to reveal the pre-historic scene that lies in front of you. Your theater seats will then begin moving as normal. Throughout the first part of the ride, not much has changed to preserve the history of the dinosaur AAs featured here. The lighting effects have been altered dramatically however, and now are a key part of telling the story. As you first come up on the brontosauruses, they're even more cast in shadow, at first appearing as mere shadowy forms before revealing themselves as you get closer.

The iconic fight between the T-Rex and Stegosaurus will remained largely untouched except once again through the lighting and cosmetics. The cliffs that the two are fighting on will be made to look more volcanic and aged, giving it the appearance the the actual rocks could collapse on themselves at any moment. In addition there will be thunder and lighting effects to set the mood properly. All volcano effects in the attraction will be updated to the latest projection mapping technology.

The creepy sharp fanged snake creature in the cave will be one of the few AAs to be completely replaced. He'll be getting a makeover as a brand new AA of the same design with realistic slithering movements. The entire cave sequence will feature much darker lighting to play up the suspense of this guy's appearance.

We will then travel to industrializing England with styeam engines and growing factories. Here the host tells about how fossil fuels made the economy grow rapidly in some nations. One of the things that's always made Universe of Energy a bit anti-climatic is the fact that after the exciting moving theater segment you are forced to watch another extended video. The new Energy Adventure will trim that out and replace it with three brand new scenes.

The first of which finds us in a desert environment boldly lit in bright shades of orange. Several oil derricks appear around us as we see the process of mining fossil fuels. The host then tells the guests about the negative effects of the fossil fuels. He tells us that its possible to stop this all and go green and so we travel to the green city. We then have a brief scene set in Silicon Valley where we pass a series of large scale white steel windmills much like the one outside the attraction.

The final scene is a grand "future city" diorama in the true Epcot spirit. Solar paneling lines the buildings, windmills pop out in proper spots, all electric cars, and overall we can see that this city is powered exclusively by the resources of wind and sun. The finale comes with a bit of an "anti-fossil fuels" message and encourages all of us to look towards alternative energy as a source to build the foundation of our planet for future generations. The host will also talk about some wonmders that green energy sources can achieve like providing energy for an attraction( on the screens you can see in what ways energy is provided to make the Universe of Energy attraction work). And with that the rotating screens close in on themselves and the attraction comes to a close with one final quick montage. That concludes the brand new Universe of Energy attraction for Epcot. ( credits to TheOriginalTiki)

Then we move on to a new Future World pavilion called the Wonders of Weather pavilion. This new pavilion can be found between the Land and the Seas. It will look like a giant sun rising from behind a cloud. Inside guests can find new experiences to enjoy. One of the new major additions is The Jet Stream dark ride. Here guests board a cloud( 6 people per vehicle) and fly along the winds of change. They will experience extreme heat, huge rainfall, strong winds and other weather conditions.

Weathercatchers is another e-ticket here. Join the weathercatchers, a group of people who catch and control several weather conditions. In this ride you are asked to catch 4 weather conditions being the rainbow, thunderstorm, tornado and the blizzard. Board a special EMV vehicle( 16 people per vehicle) created by the Weathercatchers. Then go on an adventure to catch the weather conditions. The ride will make use of many special effects with wind, water, temperature etc.

Imagineering-Disney_halls-of-weather-concept_vehicle-1a.jpg
Another attraction here is the Cloudy Adventure. This will be an immerisve IMAX theater where we follow Cloudy a rain cloud. Guests will follow him from the point that he is created till the end where he looses his rainwater. Here you will learn about the water cycle and the importance of it for humans and the environment. The seats in the theater will react to the things happening in the movie.

Then guests can go to the Weatherport. Here guests can explore an exhibit hall themed to weather.. The central focal point of the Weatherport is the forty feet tall Tornado tower. This tower reaching to the ceiling is made of glass. Guests can see how a tornado is formed. Guests can interact on screens to "create" a tornado inside the tower. Other exhibits here are the Hurricane Alley experience where guests can experience different levels of hurricanes by strength, the meteorologist studio where guests can act as meteorologists in front of the green screen, the Storm Struck exhibit where guests can see the improvements on houses that work against harsh weather conditions and there are many other individual exhibits at interactive kiosks that teach you more about the different weather types. A restaurant called the Winds of Change and a shop called Weatherworks will also be present.

Then we move on to World Showcase. First of all showcase plaza will receive flags representing the World Showcase countries: Norway, China, Morocco, United Kingdom, Germany, United States of America, Japan, Italy, France, Canada, Mexico and the three new ones being Greece, Egypt and Switzerland.

OFirst we will make a stop in Morocco. Between the Marrakesh restaurant and the Casablanc Carpets shop will be the entrance for the new 1001 Arabian Nights Adventure ride. Here we enter an old Moroccan library. You will see many books and scripts of Arabian tales. You can see that some of the pictures will start moving in the books. Then you will enter a sort of throne hall. Here you will board a flying carpet( 4 people per vehicle) and soar past Arabian legends. We will soar to another room where we meet Zarozan, an Arabian sorcerer. He tells us that the library and the palace( to which the throne hall belongs) are his and then he asks us to go and find the magical lamp. Guests will go on a flying journey through Arabian legends to find this mystical lamp to bring it back to Zarozan. You will see genies, giant birds, sorcerers, forbidden cities, magical palaces and dangerous thieves. Using smells and other special effects guests will be truly immersed into the world of 1001 nights.

Then we go to the United Kingdom pavilion. Here we will find the London Red Bus Tour. This will be a simulator ride similar to the idea of the toontown trolley tour ride that was neverbuilt. The ride will face the Queen's table. You will enter an old British bus garage. In the queue you can see pictures of British bus drivers. You will board a red double decker bus( 44 people per bus). You can choose to sit upstairs or downstairs with of course a seat bekt for the safety( which will be needed in the ride). The windows of the bus will actually be screens that will simulate your wacky tour of London.

The story will be that you are given a tour by a new bus driver, who has just started, but in the end the bus driver ends up to be not that good at driving by the nerves and so the bus driver creates a lot of chaos in London. The cast member will act as the bus driver. The cast member will leave during the ride via a door next to the seat. After the ride is done the cast member will go sit back like he or she never left. In the ride you will get a fast and wacky tour of London. Guests will be able to see famous icons as Buckingham palace, Tower of London and the Big Ben, but they can also enjoy the thrilling part of the ride as the bus will shake and move to the sides as you race over the streets of the city.

Now we will move to Italy. Here you can board the new Gondolas di Venezia ride. It will be located on the opposite side of Tutto Italiano restaurant. You will enter a Venetian port building. Near the building are new canals where the vehicles will be cruising over( placed between the American Adventure and Italy. The ride vehicles will of course be Venetian gondolas( 6 people per boat excl. gondolier). They will be moved by Italian gondoliers, who will be singing and telling the guests about the beautiful city of Venice. The ride will pass under bridges and then enters an indoor building, where guests can see famous Venetian icons and even explore the unique Venetian Carnival. The ride will use miniatures and audio animatronics. This ride won't be an e-ticket, but it will certainly be educative, relaxing and entertaining.
Then we move to the first new World Showcase pavilion being Switzerland, which is going to be placed between Italy and Germany. This pavilion would bring the Matterhorn to the park, but the ride on the mountain will be different than the one in Anaheim. But before guests reach the mountain(192 feet tall), they have to walk through a typical Swiss village. You would first see a statue of Wilhelm Tell and his son in front of a stage where you can enjoy Swiss yodel and other national music performances. The village would be home to four shops: a clock and music shop(der verrückte Kuckucksuhr), a wood carving and crafts shop( Florian's Werkstatt), a candy and gourmet food store( Der süsse Angriff), and a clothing accessories boutique( Die schöne Jungfrau). Several house facades hide the 230-seat restaurant ( Der Steinbock)upstairs and an extended queue for the Matterhorn downstairs. A tourism center and VIP lounge are also part of the plans.
Then we will move on to the main part of Switzerland of course being Matterhorn Bobsleigh. Guests enter the queue of the ride via a small Swiss cottage. Here you find out that you have entered a Swiss Olympic bobsleigh training camp. You can see different artifacts, prizes and pictures related to the bobsleighs. You will enter an icy cave of the mountain where you can see small indoor waterfalls and climbing equipment. Then when you go outside you will enter another building which will be the station. Here you can board your bobsleigh( 3 people per bobsled) which is almost identical to the Anaheim ones. In the ride you will take the wrong way and so you go on the wrong training course. In the ride we will enter a glacier cavern, a crystal cavern and also go past audio animatronic scenes with for example an avalanche checker pulling herself up while the vehicle zips by or another bobsled with audio animatronics in it blocking the way. The ride will be both indoors and outdoors. It will end with audio animatronic coaches and fans cheering for the guests.

Then we go to Greece. It can be found in between France and Morocco. The pavilion will be themed to the style of Santorini. The pavilion will have a Sirtaki dance show, a big restaurant called Aíthousa tou Día, a smaller restaurant called Taverna Mykonos, a clothing shop called Aphrodita and a shop with small statues and glasses for example. This shop will be called Katásti̱ma Akrópoli̱. Hercules and Megara will be characters that you can meet and greet here. In the pavilion will also be a new attraction.

The attraction will be called thrýlous ti̱s Elláda or the Legends of Greece( 6 people per vehicle). The ride's queue will be inside a museum. In the museum you will be able to see several artifacts as a statue of Medusa's head, Hermes' shoes and Poseidon's trident. In the ride you will find out that the Gods have returned to Earth to show us the Greek history. They then bring the artifacts of the museum back to life. The ride will use screens, audio animatronics and other special effects to stun the guests. In the ride you will see things and people as Hydra, Troye, Hades and the Cyclops. The ride will be a motion based ride, but this ride will also be a bit coaster/thrill ride like. The names of the gods could collide with the Disney Hercules movie names, so I thought if we used the Greek names for the gods this could solve that problem.

Then last, but certainly not least is the new Egypt pavilion. It will replace the Outpost. Egypt will be represented by an Egyptian market, a restaurant, a pyramid coaster and a dark ride for younger ones. The Egyptian market will sell souvenirs, artifacts, food and drinks. You can also see Egyptian dancers and music players. The restaurant will be called the Cairo Palace, here you can enjoy typical Egyptian dishes. The dark ride will be called the Story of the River. The ride will be inside an Ancient Egyptian building with murals of the Nile on it. This dark boat ride( 6 people per boat) will bring you up the Nile. The ride will teach about the growth of the Egyptian empire, the legends of the gods and the river and about the river nowadays. You will also see audio animatronic hippos and crocodiles. The ride wont be an e ticket, but more on the level of the Gondolas di Venezia.
In front of the main pyramid is the famous Sphinx. The ride will be called Secret of the Pyramid. This thrill ride will follow a search for the treasures of the Sphynx(archeological site). In the queue you will enter a maze, where guests can play games and try to pass boobytraps. The ride will be something known as the EMV coaster. The vehicles( 16 people per vehicle) will be similar to the Gringott coaster and the revenge of the mummy ride, but they will use the EMV system that can be found in the dinosaur ride too. The ride will lead deep into the pyramid, but then we find out that the Sphinx has woken and that he won't easily let people steal his treasures and so he activates boobytraps. You will also encounter scarabs for example. Can you escape the Sphinx's wrath? The rjde will use fire, light, wind, smoke and projections as effects.
So I hoped you liked my additions being the Epcot Center Gallery, Peoplemover, Universe of energy attraction refurbished and new scenes added, Wonders of Weather, London Red Bus, Gondolas di Venezia, 1001 Arabian Nights Adventure, Switzerland pavilion, Greece pavilion and the Egypt pavilion. These additions are added to bring more life to the park. Also the theme will again come back in the new rides and pavilions.

I would really like to thank the hosts of the Creator Games for giving me this opportunity to show people what I can do and you have really motivated me for future competitions here on the forums. I enjoyed every part of the competition. Thanks!

"Spirit of the Lion King"
Animal Kingdom's First Dark Ride!

It feels almost surreal typing out this project's subtitle. Can you believe that Animal Kingdom has never had a proper dark ride? Dinosaur is the closest the park has, and that attraction is certainly not the most accesible to younger children.

Almost just as puzzling as there being no dark ride in the park is the fact that The Lion King has only ever seen the light of day in the theme park landscape through theatrical shows. Don't get me wrong, "Festival" is a classic and will be perserved, but the film was for a long time the highest grossing animated picture ever.

It's still one of Disney's most iconic ventures, and in spite of my personal criticisms (hi, "Kimba the White Lion" comparisons and the fact that Simba turns into a COMPLETELY different character half way through!) I still feel like the film itself deserves to be a permanent fixture, and Animal Kingdom is absolutely the perfect place to do that!

As mentioned before, Festival of the Lion King will stay right where it's at. "Spirit" is meant to compliment the show, as both will focus on different elements of the film. While Festival focuses on the music, Spirit will focus more on the set pieces and atmosphere.

The bathrooms near Festival will be removed to make way for the expansion of what will essentially be a Lion King mini-land within Africa. What other exterior for a Lion King ride could possibly be more appropriate than Pride Rock? Indeed, this classic Disney location will be recreated as the entrance to the attraction, and will act as a Weenie for the area and a perfect compliment to the park's growing skyline.

pride_rock_by_youmaneko-d4ge54q.jpg

One other important note before we get to the specifics of the ride. While Rafiki has moved out of Conservation Station, he'll still have a prominent role in the park as master of ceremonies of "Rafiki's Royal Ceremony". This is an event that will happen three times a day, in which an actor playing Rafiki raises up a baby Simba to the view of a variety of different animals in puppet form who gather at the base of the rock in a parade-like fashion.

The queue for this attraction will be rather minimilistic to keep up the mystery of what's to come. Guests will wander through the innards of Pride Rock, past a group of sleeping lionesses, and through a cave where they can overhear Scar plotting his evil scheme. We then go into a tree-like environment where we see a collection of Rafiki's paintings.

20140914045754

We reach the boarding area of what looks to be the edge of a watering hole, the color pallet of the queue going from hues of dark brown to light greens and blues as we get closer to our vehicles. The vehicles themselves will be abstract and made to look like African arts and crafts tied together with leaves and vines. The occasional Timon and Puumba style bug can also be spotted on the car, each one designed in a completely unique way.

Scene One: Hakuna Matata

Instead of retelling the story from the beginning, the ride picks up the middle of the action. The first scene we see is an elaborate recreation of the famous log bridge from the hit song, illuminated against the moonlight.

lionking.jpg

We then see the trio swinging on vines much like in the song, singing gleefully about having no worries for the rest of their days!

Scene Two: Scar's Reign

Oh...so you don't have any worries Simba? Well you will soon! The next scene takes us back to the now barren and desolate Pride Rock, taken over after Scar's evil scheme has come into fruition. Rafiki is looking on with an expression of great remorse.

lk_screengrab_450.jpg

As we get closer into the actual rock, we can hear the sounds of Zazu singing It's a Small World, much to Scar's dismay. After passing Scar's chambers, we get a quick view of Nala leaving the Pride Lands in search of Simba.

Every dark ride needs a "London" scene. Basically, this is a scene where the action takes a breather and guests can fully immerse themselves in the atmosphere. Can You Feel the Love Tonight is this attraction's scene. In spite of the seriousness of Scar's takeover, Nala and Simba can't resist their feelings upon seeing each other for the first time. Leading to a large scale recreation of the film's most popular song. We can also see Timon and Pumba watching in the background in mourning.

Scene Four: Mufasa's Spirit

Rafiki pops up from the bushes, urging us to follow him. After a short "chase" scene through tall grass, we arrive at by far the most technologically impressive scene in ride. Using advanced projection mapping technology, the ghost of Mufasa is able to appear to us and Simba in an incredibly convincing way, seemingly popping out from the clouds with no screen in sight (hi, Constance!) this will be one of the most advanced effects that Disney has ever attempted in any of their parks.

Scene Five: Hawaiian War Chant

And now we come to the comedic portion of our adventure! After passing by the trio of hyenas glaring at us menacingly, we round a corner to see...well...this...

Scene Six: Simba's Blaze of Glory

A fire has broken out across the now barren Pride Lands (using an effect similar to POTC's burning town) and all the hyenas have gathered on Pride Rock. A group of lions and lionesses look on as Scar and Simba have a dramatic fight on top of the rock. Rounding a corner, we hear Scar scream and then see a shadow effect of him being ganged up on by the hyenas.

Scene Seven: The Once and Future King

The final scene of the attraction will be the Pride Lands once again in full bloom. We see a recreation of the film's ending, with all the animals gathered together to witness Rafiki's ceremony for Simba and Nala's first child. We approach Pride Rock and enter a cave which heads back to the loading area.
