America the Beautiful:

A Star-Spangled Journey Through American History

New to the American Pavilion in Epcot is America the Beautiful, the newest addition to Epcot. Due to the limited footprint of the American Pavilion and the potential redundancy in attractions, this new ride will exist in the present day footprint of American Adventure.
image.jpg1_zpsm9sjtt6t.jpg

Facade:
One of the biggest problems I have with the American pavilion as it stands now is that it does not fit in with the rest of the World Showcase. Every country takes place in the current day, whether at historic landmarks or a traditional market. America, on the other hand, is stuck in the 1700's. Therefore, I have decided that the new facade will be the most iconic building in the United States: The White House.
whitehouse_historypg.jpg

Queue:
As you enter the front doors, with Secret Service agents standing on each side (live actors who will periodically interact with guests). Along with at the front door, you will see many Secret Service members and other political workers walking around, potentially interacting with you. As you journey through the White House, you will not see gimmicky games or interactive screens, you will be forced to look at only the best replica of the White House ever created. You will travel through iconic places like the Green Room, the Situation Room, and even pass by a door that says Bowling Alley! Eventually, you will work your way to the Oval Office itself, where you will watch the preshow.
green-room-2008-se.jpg

P123011CK-0063-resized-.jpg

Preshow:
You will be escorted in by the President's secretary, and will stand in the room alone with all of your closest friends from the line. Suddenly, you hear "There he is!" and a secret door opens. Out of that door comes a highly advanced AA figure of our very own president, Mr. Francis Underwood!
house_of_cards2.jpg

:p
Obviously I am just joking, but there will be an AA of our actual president, Barack Obama. He will walk to his chair and then sit down and start to talk. He will tell us that using new technology developed by the CIA, we can now travel back and see what it was like for our ancestors in our great nation. We will then continue on to the loading area. NOTE: President Obama will also serve as the narrator, and whenever there is a new president elected, they will receive a new AA and narration.
President-Obama-Oval-Office.jpg

Loading Area:
The loading area is a top secret wing of the White House, where we board a large tram style vehicle that houses 8 rows of 8.

Ride Experience:
Due to there being many short scenes so we can pack as much American history into one ride, I will just list the scene location, date, and any other necessary information:
Scene 1: Jamestown, 1600's
Scene 2: Declaration of Independence Signing
Scene 3: George Washington Crossing The Delaware River
Scene 4: Washington Inauguration
Scene 5: War of 1812
Scene 6: Civil War (Gettysburg)
Scene 7: Reconstruction/Industrial Revolution
Scene 8: World War 1
Scene 9: Mickey Mouse/Charlie Chaplin Hollywood Age
Scene 10: Pearl Harbor/WWII/

Scene 11: Manhattan Project
Scene 12: Vietnam War Protests
Scene 13: Civil Rights Movement/"I Have a Dream"
Scene 14: Watergate Scandal
Scene 15: 9/11 Tragedy (No tragedy footage shown)/Iraqi War
Scene 16: Obama Inauguration

As a segway from the Inauguration, we are told by Obama that this country is one of the finest in the world, and we are also one of the youngest. There is still a lot of room for our country to grow and build even more chapters in this tour of the past. The President saying that will allude to the fact that there has been room designated for more scenes to be added over time to the end whenever something else integral to the knowledge of American History happens. Who knows, that history could be happening around us right now.

In conclusion, America the Beautiful will be a ride that stands the test of time and becomes a classic Disney dark ride. One reason that I personally feel so strongly about this ride is because it does not shy away from touchier subjects like the Watergate Scandal. One reason I chose to include things like that is because this is a ride about American history; whether we like it or not, it still happened. Also, foreign tourists would be pleased to not see a ride that just hypes up America on only good events and fluffy things like the Miracle on Ice.

Thank you for reading, and God Bless America!

AoI Challenge Critiques

Great proposals guys! All were unique in their own special ways. Now, to dive into reviewing them a bit...

@TheOriginalTiki
Very captivating introduction! I really like the idea of having the Dreamfinder be a character out and about interacting with guests, and the way you rationalized it from the company's perspective was very smart and probably something I wouldn't have thought of. One issue though is that I'm not quite sure how you incorporate Turtle Talk technology, done with screens/projections, on a live Figment. Perhaps Lucky the Dinosaur tech could work better. Overall though, this really adds something to the area and brings back a character people know and love.

@DisneyPrincess1993
While the other contestants chose to focus on a specific area, you encompassed an eclectic variety of areas, which is both good and bad. It allowed for more of these creative ideas and to round out Epcot's selections, but not really narrowing your focus led to the ideas lacking some detail and elaboration. I think all of your suggestions would be good additions to the respective nations, and offer a bit more cultural perspective as well. The one part that I question is the JiI piano. The directions said to use either Future World or World Showcase, but that could have been interpreted differently. In retrospect, we probably should have emphasized that we meant "not both" to avoid misinterpretation, so that may hurt it in the end, but despite that you had some really nice ideas!

@tcool

Nice idea with the Norwegian cultural impact. Especially with the influx of Frozen, going back to Scandinavian roots is a definite treat, however with your maximum text/images not reached yet, it would have been interesting to see some more elaboration. Good job overall with this idea, just a bit more detail needed. In addition, you did not include the required background music selection.

@RMichael21
I'm not sure Doctor Who is the best fit for World Showcase, mostly since it makes use of an IP. Last summer, you, @@englanddg, and@@Zweiland did a nice job in SA integrating DW with cultural tie-ins, but this feels simply like shoehorning a character. It would definitely add Streetmosphere to the area, and it will very much make the fans of the show happy/drawn to the area! Lastly, you too did not include the required background music for the submission. Overall, it's an interesting thought for sure, just this concept would need more work before applying it to the WS.

The results will come soon...

AoI Judgements & Reward

Congratulations and thank you to all contestants who participated in the AoI challenge this week! Without further adieu though, here are the results ;)

1. @TheOriginalTiki- Great job on your concept this week, you made great use of your sentences and created a Streetmosphere experience that all will love!
2. @DisneyPrincess1993- You had a lot of really good ideas, it just didn't all come together to beat Tiki this time.
3. @tcool- Unfortunately, despite a really nice concept, lack of detail and a music selection hurt you this challenge.
4. @RMichael21- Like tcool with the minor exclusion of music and some lacking detail, this just didn't quite bring a win.

Now, @TheOriginalTiki, for your reward...You have won the Sorcerer's Hat!
tumblr_miluvgpIEu1s4zjvuo6_500.gif

The Sorcerer's Hat is a very powerful advantage.

Within the first 12 hours of any Concept Creation challenge through Session 8, you say "I would like to wear the Sorcerer's Hat this week!". When you are wearing the Sorcerer's Hat, you get special powers...

You (or your team if you use it in a team challenge) will receive an advantage over the other contestants. This advantage can be along the lines of a lack of text/image restrictions that challenge, an extended due date, a larger "budget", etc. Things along those lines. The reward will always be different depending on which challenge you use it on.

You do not have to play it for yourself if you choose not to. Going off of this, if RM's Poison Apple and the Sorcerer's Hat are both played on the same person, they will cancel each other out.

That's all there is to it! How you use it is up to you...good luck... ;)

It's time to really bring it everyone...Bring your best because this challenge is important...There will not be an elimination challenge this round, and 1 player will be eliminated from this CC challenge. So, as you can see, the stakes are high ;)

In this challenge, you will be competing individually to design a concept for a new attraction at any country in the World Showcase at Epcot.

Sounds simple enough, right? Same old World Showcase challenge as in many other comps, I got this!

Not quite ;)

Like all WS challenges in these comps, there is a twist, whether it be make a roller coaster, you can't be in a moving vehicle, etc. For us? We want a new attraction for all 10 WS countries (excluding Norway as it is currently having one built). By the end of the week, everyone must submit a proposal for a different country. However, no one will be assigned a country to work on.

So, the question is, do you work quickly to submit your favorite country in a few days to make sure no one takes it before you, or do you take the time to develop a more thorough concept with the hope that no one else will do it? Because keep in mind, you may not have a repeat country.

Welcome to Japan!
" Faith can move mountains. "
- Japanese Proverb

epcot-fuji.png

I chose to create a new, roller coaster/dark ride hybrid for the Japan Pavilion called "Mountain of the Rising Sun". The rise utilizes a system similar to the Flying Turns coaster at Knoebel's Amusement Park, switching to a tubular track during show scenes.

(For your listening pleasure)

After queuing through a bonsai garden, guests board coaster cars reminiscent of both a bullet train and classic Japanese architecture. They look very classy.

The trains enter the mountain and go into a show scene depicting a dark mass of land.
"This is ancient Japan, still adjoined to China in a cultural and spiritual bond that will last forever."
Dark_Sunrise_by_ChristianLotRFan.jpg

Then there is a coaster section through icy Mount Fuji, including bobsled track sections that include a 360' tube around the vehicles, meaning full spiral motion is possible
http://.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_5104-XL.jpg

We then come upon a village in the forest.
"Eventually, a strong culture developed in Japan. People were thriving in villages across the islands. Meanwhile, the samurais were the watchful protectors."
Guests continue through a village, which an evil gang has infiltrated. They terrorize the citizens and torch many establishments. Think of this scene as the one from Pirates of the Caribbean, but with Japanese rebels as a high speed coaster weaving throughout. Eventually the cars slow down again to witness the climactic battle between the lead samurai and the head of the rebellion.

Another icy transition through Mount Fuji.

A scene riding above the bright lights of Tokyo today.
"Though Japan's history has been violent at times, the great nation has risen from the ashes into a jewel of commerce today."

A lotus garden outside of the mountain structure.

Back to a seemingly ancient Japan, with small fishing villages around Tokyo Bay.
"And here we are. We have come full circle. This group of islands has been known as many things over the millennia; a place of honor, a place of industry, a place of patriotism. But most importantly as Japan...the land of the rising sun" (cue inspirational music)

Concept Creation Challenge Reviews

This was a fun week to watch ;) Despite the huge and threatening twist, many of you were able to triumph and make great, if not your best, projects this week! However, so far only @RMichael21 is safe, and one person will go home.

Because all of the judges had different viewpoints, we all decided to post our separate reviews, and then we will post the average of our rankings here to determine the winner.

Please, remember all comments to the discussion thread ;)

Reviews:

@jdmdisney99 – Personally I loved this attraction. I’m a huge sucker for Japan and this ride hit all my high notes. It improved the Epcot skyline, put a twist on the bullet train idea, and brought guests on an exciting journey through Japanese culture and history. By biggest complaint was that the ending seemed very rushed, I would have liked to see a few more ‘ancient scenes’ like maybe when Japan and the West were reunited, something to bring it a bit more full circle. The village scene was very well written and I think adds some character to the ride rather than it just being something like Maelstrom where its bland character wise. Overall you did a very good job on this one.

@Matt7187 – I don’t like this one…at all. I love this country, probably a bit more than I should, but this attraction doesn’t sit well with me at all. My first problem is the white house façade. I don’t think this should be a thing, firstly it portrays a false idea of our President being the most powerful and admirable figure in our nation which if American history has taught us anything is that it’s not true. Secondly, your reasoning for it is pretty bad. The White House was constructed in the colonial period so…yeah. Thirdly, each pavilion is supposed to portray an architectural style a nation is known for; on the global scale we are known for our Art Deco or Georgian architecture, settling for a town our city designed around these would have worked much better; another idea would maybe be an Ellis Island/NYC type of set up. The next half comes from the attraction itself…I hate it. While I like you tried to show the ‘dark side’ of US history, every nation has a dark side. Why don’t we make a German ride that shows Nazi party rallies, or an English ride that showcases the hate against Scotland and other UK countries, or maybe a Japanese attraction depicting the horrors of WWII would be fitting. A gruesome Christian genocide ride for Italy perhaps? Epcot is not a platform to show the shortcomings of nations, but instead their triumphs and success, from what I can see your attraction does none of that or at least fails to describe the exact nature of your scenes. Where is the Immigrant story? Or the tech revolution? Why should the US have to show its ugly side where as other WS nations get to show their triumphs and pretty faces? The US has done great things and while by no means we should ignore the ugly aspects of our history we should always put our best foot forward and celebrate the human rights, technological, cultural, and political triumphs our nation has been witness to over the past 250 years.

@TheOriginalTiki – I thought this was one of the most culturally rich attractions we saw this week. It was a wonderful celebration of Moroccan culture and I think adds some more life and vibrancy to the Moroccan pavilion your descriptions were well thought out and explained very well what would happen in your attraction. However, I would have like something more geared towards history…maybe the history of the region through dance? But still it was a wonderfully unique attraction and I think one of the best of the night.

@orlando678 – I love Roman history and this was a great addition to the Italy pavilion. One of my biggest complaints about the Italian pavilion is the lack of things to do, this changes that completely. A walk through Roman history not only excites the imagination, but fits perfectly in with what Epcot is about. It tells the story of an important part of the story of humanity and for that I think it was brilliant. Having Saturn as your guide adds a nice story and character aspect to the attraction and gives it a sense of time and place. This attraction was done very well.

@ctxak98 – This one was interesting, very interesting. I like the concept of bringing some more mythology and using Canadian nature to create a thrilling attraction. The story is, however, a bit short. I wish you would have gone into detail for the scenes because you left me wondering who exactly Ogopogo was. It was a very nice concept, but I wished you had fleshed it out more.

@DisneyPrincess1993 – A very interesting approach to France. France is not known mainstream for it’s medieval history and this was an interesting way to bring it to light. The façade was also well designed to fit in well with the existing Parisian style of the pavilion. I also love how it tells the story of this lost society, but at the same time intertwines the fantasy idea of it we all know and love. This was one of my favorite rides this week, but presentation plays a role in this stuff too. To date most if not all of your projects have been presented on websites. While this is certainly the best way to have a very organized and ‘fancy’ presentation, it’s getting a bit old. I think it would be best for you as a competitor to maybe branch out and try a few new presentation methods than just the website.

@RMichael21 – Yes! The Chinese dragon! I was hoping someone would do this for China and what you delivered was thrilling and interesting. It brings to life one of the most beautiful ancient cultures known to man and does a brilliant job of describing the role China has played in the story of man. I think the attraction would be one of the best Disney has ever made if it were built. Wonderfully done. My one complaint is that the script was a bit tiresome to read through, but well worth it.

@tcool – Your attraction was an Interesting retelling of Into the Woods. As many here know *cough* englanddg *cough* I love Germany and I felt that this attraction did a very good job bringing to life those fantasy stories we all love, much like DisneyPrincess did. It was an interesting journey into the storybook Germany some idealize. M biggest complaint is that for anyone familiar with Into the Woods would know that this is a very similar story to that one. I would have preferred a more original story to have been created for such an interesting idea.

@MCParradox – I’m not a big fan of this one. I love Mary Poppins as much as the next Disney fan, but I’m not a big fan of Disney films being in Epcot. I think that Epcot’s role is to tell the human story of the past, the present, and the future. I think that bringing Disney characters does not achieve this. I would have like to see an English ride that portrayed the Industrial Revolution, or how the British Empire helped globalize the world, or something with an original storyline. This attraction simply followed along the story line of an existing story and did not introduce guests to a new story.

Ok, for my reviews and rankings, they were shorter than usual because I'm a bit busy, but here they are ;) :)

1. @DisneyPrincess1993- The website format was great to organize, and you had a lot of detail to immerse me in project! Also, I can see you are starting to work with art. Sure, it's not perfect, but I like where this can go!
2. @Matt7187- Brilliant redesign of America pavilion and the new America the Beautiful attraction is very clever! Great integration of entertainment and education while keeping it classy (as in no interactivity in queue, etc.)
3. @RMichael21- I still have a few questions about how the ride system actually works, but nonetheless I really like the story and cultural connections this attraction has. Nice work creating this!
4.@orlando678-- Great and exciting music, concept sounds captivating, and well researched. This is the type of experience I want to ride :D
5. @jdmdisney99- Awesome ride system and concept, but I wish you elaborated more on the story to get a better sense of what is going on around us. Other than that, this will fit in Japan like a glove.
6. @TheOriginalTiki- It's not a bad concept and I can for sure see the research and thought behind it, but honestly (and this is a personal thing), the concept just doesn't really click for me, and it's not quite what a lot of people will expect for in a Moroccan ride.
7.@MCParradox- Not quite best work, but fun ride. Didn't include much detail, but sometimes a little bit is perfect. Nice music also, and probably just a coincidence but it seemed to sync up perfectly at some points to where I was reading :p
8. @tcool- This was a cute, folksy dark ride that would fit very comfortably in the WS :p;) But yeah, its just a simple attraction for all ages to round out its selections. Nice job, but I just feel like some of the other contestant's proposals "clicked" more
9. @ctxak98- While a really cool concept for the area, for sure beautiful and captivating, there are some areas that I am a bit hesitant on. In particular, the size of this attraction makes it hard to see how it fits. Though, I like the idea, and I only rank you down here because of tough competition.
10. @JokersWild- It really sucks having to eliminate you because of this, but the strong competition and proposals have to go above you.

@DisneyPrincess1993 - France
- Very good project. Once again, showing your strengths with the excellent website. Let's see how you did. I really liked the historical analysis and background, it really helps people who may not be well versed in the subject material, understand your concept. The organization was also great! If the map was a tad bit bigger it could have helped, but that might just be because I have glasses:p. It's also really a nitpick. Overall, this was a great and unique proposal, and the first one to be submitted, so kudos for turning it in well in advance!

@RMichael21 - China
- Congratulations on choosing the immunity country. Regardless of the review, you're going into the next round, but let's see how you did nonetheless. I like the imagery and cultural ties. You did a good job incorporating all of that into the pavilion. The ride system itself could have used a little more elaboration. While I like where you were going with the boat ride, how does it go from being a theater in the round to a boat ride? Is it like the Universe of Energy where the cars in the theaters separate and are guided by the floor? Otherwise, the content of the ride was very thorough and well done. Overall, you did a good job!

@tcool - Germany
- Nice proposal! I really like the inclusion of the Grimm Library in the beginning. It reminded me of the Enchanted Tales with Belle intro scenes mixed with German folklore. I also liked how the host's name was Jahelm Grimm (I'm assuming Jacob and Wilhelm combined;)). Overall, the scenes were nicely done, possibly a little more detail could have helped, but not too bad. You didn't outdo yourself with the technology either. Standard dark rides I think are underrated as everyone attempts to do the next big tech. It would be nice to go back to the roots. Overall, a solid concept.

@MCParradox - UK
- Neat proposal, and why did I have a feeling you would choose the UK? :p Mary Poppins is definitely a beloved Disney classic, and is definitely one of the most popular armchair concepts to go into the UK. You did a good job with this, though do the horses only take one rider per horse? That could lead to capacity issues if so. And while I enjoy the film, sometimes on rides based on films, it's more interesting when the ride doesn't simply retell the film. When it follows a different story, with the same characters, it could act as a more unique experience. But overall, a fine project.

@ctxak98 - Canada
- Nice concept, let's see how you did. Well you were right that nobody else did Canada, and I think your rapids idea was a very good thought. The only questions I still have is, where would it be located, and how tall would it be? You had said it will act as "Epcot's Expedition Everest" and that is a very large and tall attraction. A little more elaboration on how this attraction can physical fit in Canada could have helped. But other than that, I really like the mythological twist on it and the ride itself would be very cool. But again it just goes back to how it would fit in Canada, because a 10-12 minute ride would be huge! Overall, though I like the thought!

@orlando678- - Italy
- Interesting concept. I think along with ctxak98, it would have been nice to know where in Italy the attraction would be located. Either a map or something like that. Especially since this ride is very detailed and extensive (14 mins long), I just wonder how it fits in such a small space. But enough with the negative, your description of the ride is very thorough. I appreciate how you used Roman history and mythology in the proposal, I just wish I could visualize where the attraction would go and what the facade would look like. but nice job overall!

@TheOriginalTiki - Morocco
- *Groovy* project. I say that because I was pretty impressed you took a dance concept and turned it into something pretty neat. I do agree that the spinner flat rides would boost capacity, initially I feared it may end up looking something like Dinorama, and contrast the extensive detail of Morocco. But I like how it's included inside a Moroccan church to hide those contrasting elements. The displays and detail you put into them clearly show, as I think this will add a really fun area for everyone, and could become a highlight of WS. Very good, overall.

@Matt7187 - America
- Very interesting. You really got creative with this one and I think this type of attraction could work really well in order to make the American Adventure part of WS. Though I am sad to see the American Adventure show, go away, because to me that's one of the best shows in all of WDW. But a good way to have those fears be erased is by creating a great attraction, and it seems like you did that. I like the journey through American history (and if only Frank Underwood actually did greet you...). You did a good job at hitting on the main points. My only criticism is that now Pres. Obama will be in 2 different attractions, and having him included takes away from the Hall of Presidents in my view. I like Mark Twain and Ben Franklin, but that's just me. Overall a nice project!

@jdmdisney99 - Japan
- Nice project! The idea of the Mt. Fuji type roller coaster is good, and has definitely been a popular choice among fans for Japan! The bobsleds are pretty neat as well, though some more detail could have helped flesh out your attraction components. The imagery did a good job to compensate for the dearth of text though, as they really painted the picture well as to what to expect from each scene in the attraction. Overall, a solid concept.

Concept Creation Challenge

It's time to bring your best performance center-stage!

As noted in the video above, this challenge is somewhat unique, and the Session 5 Concept Creation winner, @DisneyPrincess1993, plays a very intriguing role. Since there are an odd number of total contestants, the remaining 8 contestants, aside from the winner, have been picked randomly (literally picked out of a hat :p) and placed into two respective teams.

Team Hollywood
@MCParradox
@RMichael21
@ctxak98
@orlando678-

Team California
@TheOriginalTiki
@Matt7187
@jdmdisney99
@tcool

In your teams, your job is to create a permanent show to be located inside DHS's Hyperion Theater. While we believe there is a Frozen show in there right now, pretend as if that doesn't exist and you are simply creating a new show.

Now here's where it gets interesting. For the first few days of this challenge, the @DisneyPrincess1993, as the Session 5 Winner, will be on both team PMs, passively observing. With 48 hours before the challenge deadline, the she will have to make a choice, and "endorse" which team has the best concept (and best opportunity to win the challenge) At this point, she will join the endorsed for the remainder of the challenge and be able to assist only with whatever project concept the team is working on. She will also be removed from the other team's PM.

If she joins the team that ends up winning the Session 6 CC Challenge, that entire team will have a reward going forward, and the losing team will enter a Sudden-Death Challenge.

However...if the @DisneyPrincess1993 's team ends up losing, then she along with two other members from her team, chosen by the winning team, will compete in a SD challenge.

So, as you can see, this power must be used very carefully.

The second part of her advantage? It's a de-facto advantage of not having to work on a Concept Creation challenge during the first few days, so when the final AoI challenge is posted, she will be able to work on it without any other challenges in progress.

Two contestants will be eliminated from this Session's Sudden-Death Challenge, whether 3 or 4 compete in it. leaving 7 contestants for Session 7...

Challenge due Friday, June 5th, at 7:00 PM EST (additional time zones will be listed in a separate post), though remember, you may always post any time between now and then. You have no limits/restrictions for this challenge.

If anyone has any questions feel free to PM the judges. You'll be receiving your team PM's soon...

Good Luck everyone!:)

Concept Creation Challenge Reviews

Alright guys...So, now that you have heard what we all have to say, this is the average total ranking of the contestants using a "point" system (basically, if I ranked you 3rd, Sam ranked you 4th, and space ranked you 2nd, you would get 9 points, and thus be placed where ever 9 is among the different point totals).

1.) @DisneyPrincess1993
2.) @RMichael21
3.) @TheOriginalTiki
4T.) @Matt7187 & @jdmdisney99
6.) @orlando678-
7.) @MCParradox
8.) @tcool
9.) @ctxak98
10.) @JokersWild

@JokersWild, unfortunately, you have been eliminated. It's been great having you and I hope to see you in the Omega challenge perhaps! :)

That's all, and it looks like session 5 has come to a close. We are halfway through everyone, and the toughest is yet to come...;)
i do have every intention of participating in the omega challenge ;). And SA, of course....
