It's 54 outside now. Ahhhhh . . . refreshing coolness!!

I played golf this morning with my daughter, my son in law and my 9 year old granddaughter. It was 80 something before we started and climbed the ladder rapidly. All the little one did was complain about how hot it was. According to her it was a million gazillion degrees or roughly the temperature of the sun. Ironically she is the only member of my family that was born here. A true southerner complaining about how hot it is. Bless her heart.

So apparently I have allergies down here in the spring. I've never been in May before, and there's grass pollen out. Which is weird because I'm not allergic to grass pollen at home unless I sit it grass.

Not too bad though; I just wake up and sneeze a bunch. I'm used to not having allergies down here, though.

@93boomer I was told you garden in the North Carolina area and might have some sage advice on the following.

Looking for shade tree advice.
We are building a new house in North Carolina, specifically the foothills of the mountains.

Our house sits in the middle of a field, intentionally to avoid pine trees which are notorious for falling. We obviously want a solid front yard with shade at some point down the line, so I’ve been researching various fast growing tree varieties which provide a lot of limb spread for shade.

So far, I believe red maple and silver maple trees seem to offer the most bang for your buck (bonus points for some fall foliage colors too) but does anyone have any recommendations for the mid-Atlantic/southeast United States for quick growing shade tree varieties?

I live on a street with silver maple. Stay far away! We have a bumper crop of propellers this year, the leaves are always the last to fall, never change color. And they are messy trees. The red maple we have, on the other hand, is lovely. A nice color variation in the street scape. And has lovely shade.

Anyone else watch the finale last night of American Idol? I thought the top 3 were all excellent, but to choose one, was kinda like comparing apples to oranges. They were all so unique, and great performers.

Fell asleep for a while but luckily woke up again at 10:30, so I saw the final performances and decision.

My own picks were different from the judges and online public votes. Chayce came in #1 (I placed him as # 3), Willie, who was my favorite, came in at #2 (he should have been #1), and Grace came in 3rd place (my choice for her would have been #2).
