The interesting part is a whole lot of the so called "generic" food are made by the same high priced companies and store labeled at a cheaper price. It's called getting every area of the available market. The difference usually is that the profit margin on the non-generics is just higher. I've compared for years and have never found any difference in taste or quantity, at least in canned or bottled items.

I'm really weird, some things I can go generic, others I hate. for example ketchup. I don't know why but the store variety is just not the same as heinz. I think maybe it's the tomatoe products because I found the same with can tomatoe things (crushed, sauce, diced) my generic equivalent just taste saltier and less flavor. lol I'm a can tomatoe snob, don't come through the house with any thing but tuttorosso.

I'm an amateur baker from a family that owns a bakery, so yeah I can taste the difference between store brand baking chocolate and a higher quality name brand

bread, cereal, chips, can vegetables all that no problem with generic.

I guess that somethings will qualify. I can confirm that the last time I bought any baking chocolate was, well, never to be honest, so I will yield to your experiences. Tomatoes, yea, I can remember working with an Italian guy that gave me this gigantic recipe for spaghetti sauce that he claimed was handed down for generations from his family. I swear it contained everything except the kitchen sink and required a cooking time of over 8 hours. I made it twice and I think the recipe went with my wife when she left and most likely she tossed it. He was specific about the brand and even the store to buy the tomatoes from. I can picture the label but cannot remember the name of the brand. The one you mentioned might have been it. The last time I made it was before my kids were born and the oldest will be 46 next month.

Baking is one of those things where unfortunately the ingredients really can stand out. Where as sauces it's usually a "blend" of flavors. Even folks who never bake can tell the difference. Ice cream tends to be another one of those things. It use to be back in the day most mid price ranged name brand ice cream (breyers etc ) was well Ice cream, now so much of it is that horrible "frozen dairy dessert". Generic brands tend to be frozen dairy desserts . now I have all boys who will pretty much inhale just about anything but I think most people can taste the difference in a good quality ice cream (lol with real cream and butterfat). Now whether or not we want to pay the ridiculous prices they ask is a whole other problem.

Believe me for example if you are a chocolate cake fan, you can tell a chocolate cake made from good chocolate and european butter vs one made with the generic stuff.

I do dig generics though.

One thing I found is it depends on the store. I used to buy Breyer's all the time from Walmart. Then all of a sudden they doubled in price. They were more expensive then Blue Bunny which always was considered a premium ice cream. Then I tried the Walmart "Great Value" brand was just as good, creamy and tasty as Breyer's. I always thought that Breyer's was good, but, not that good comparatively. Heck I'm from the land of Ben and Jerry's and never buy it because it may be good, but not that good. I even knew Ben from different conventions in my home area for retail and grocery companies where he used to scoop samples in the beginning years of the brand. I used to have a booth along side them and spent a lot of idol hours just chatting. I was in Advertising at the time. I guess the same thing might be said about Maple Syrup. I lived in the location of one of the biggest Maple producers in the world and have never bought an ounce. When you say it grows on trees, nothing could be truer. I like it, my sister usually gives it out as Christmas gifts for us relocated yankees here in NC., but way to expensive to be worthwhile.

Maybe it's a boy thing... one of my brothers is a total brand name snob, even at the age of 40.... for Thanksgiving, I was in charge of bringing the rolls, Hawaiian rolls, but they couldn't be the Aunt Millies... they had to be the name brand ones. EYEROLL. Whatev's! My other little brothers a chef, and I don't think he's as picky. The only thing I remember is as a teen he like doritos..... he would open a bag and eat some, but he would never finish a bag... and then he'd open a new one, even though there was still some in the first bag...... he told my mom he only liked Fresh ones... ... KIDS!
My boys wouldn't mind eating week old chips, oh wait they've never lasted a week:cautious:

The one problem with that is that is what is driving the anti-vaccine group. There is a huge difference between the risk/reward when it comes to vaccines vs. medicines. There are usually many substitute options for many medicines that can be used instead of the specific item that is advertised, so the risk becomes higher. Since deaths have happened when connected to vaccines the same logic, or lack thereof, is applied. So they decide that it is unsafe to get those things when it is far, far, far more unsafe not too. The end result of not getting a polio vaccine, for example, is getting polio. The likely result for getting the vaccination is a long happy life. If the past few years around this country has proved nothing else we are not all that bright as a nation and even though we have centuries of knowledge right at our fingertips via the internet we are only looking for the answers we want and not a balanced, thoughtful process. As far as the products advertised on TV, just say no! If your doctor recommends something then just ask what experience they have had with the product, but listen to the answer. They are more equipped and educated to have a knowledge of any problems.
Yes unless they have more drug company reps waiting than patients;)
