I overslept until 8:30. I had quite a night. Wind all night. Power to our well went out around 9:00 so had to call a neighbor to help figure out what happened. DH was out working with no cell service. Finally he came home around 10 and one look could tell power was out. Something about a wire down at transformer. So no water all night and this morning. Hopefully today. Ahh the joys of bad winds.

Happy to hear that T enjoyed his trick or treat evening! That's quite a haul of candy!

Also, what a nice idea to put together treat bags for children and military. When I was a kid, we just focused on ourselves. It's good to start kids young, with a knowledge and compassion for others who may not have the same opportunities. I only recall one year that a nun gave us little donation boxes for Unicef, and we took those around when we also got our candy at houses.

( I prefer the method that T's school used, because people were sort of caught off guard when we came to the door with the Unicef donation boxes, asking for change. They were prepared to give candy, but it was awkward when they had to look around for change, on top of that. Oh, the Unicef thing only lasted once, by the way! )

I remember the Unicef boxes. I didn’t like them either. You had to say both “trick or treat” and “money for unicef”(something along those lines.)

I was just asked why I bought so many bags of candy. Me: "Oh, you never know how many kids will come by."

(I say that every year.)

Although I'm certain there will be some bags left over at the end of the night, I'll make sure that some bags are still sealed. Last year, my church started a leftover candy collection from parishoners, and those bags were donated to military service personnel. (Might have been USO -- not sure, but anyway the church took care of it.)

I might need to look into donating candy. I got 2 big bags of candy. We usually go through a bag and a half. We had no trick or treaters, and I have a lot of leftover candy. The bigger bag was never opened. I wonder if Target would let me return it?

I can still hear the wind, branches litter the roads, some school are close due to lack of power One of the worst parts is I went to bed in cute shorts and cami pjs and now I'm in 3 layers of heavier clothing and the heat is cranked up ay least the power is on knock wood

Exactly! This morning was much nicer, because...wait for it...she went to sleep around 11:30. The night before, her homework, which included editing a movie short that wouldn't upload, had her up until the wee hours of the morning.

This morning, DD was looking for Christmas music on our short drive to school. Before this year, if I listened to Christmas music before Dec 1st, she would be rolling her eyes, as only a teenage girl can.

Of course, it helps that it looks like Christmas time outside. I think we ended up with just under 6 inches.

It is neat. K-8 brings in the candy, then the older grades make cute treat bags and takes care of mailing them to the troops and delivering to the other school.
We’re also currently doing a coat/gloves/hat drive, and the turkey and toy drives will be coming up soon. T enjoys shopping for the toy drive as well as the giving tree presents. I think all kids really enjoy the act of giving to others and providing a little joy to someone else.

By the way... How come no one told me about Trunk or Treat. I never got that memo and just sat there gap mouthed while others talked about the good time the kids had. Seems a little extreme to me. Don't they get enough just on Halloween? I'm thinking the next generations highest priority will be to stock up on insulin.

Our church and a few local public schools do Trunk or Treat the weekend prior to Halloween. It’s a lot of fun for all involved. At our parish’s (which we didn’t make this year) they grill out, have raffle tickets, stream a Halloween movie afterwards, parents can have adult beverages, and everyone goes all out on their ‘trunks’.

Both kids and adults really enjoy it. We had soccer (go figure) so regrettably couldn’t make it this time.

If Target doesn’t let you return, then you could post on Facebook, there’s a lot of schools and groups who do candy drives. I’ve already seen requests on my FB homepage this morning.

Trunk or Treat 2018-




I don’t have a photo of the movie screen, but it’s really neat. I think the idea of any Trunk or Treat is for friends to get together and have a good time, with a bonus of candy.

Dh was very helpful organizing what is already bought and put away for Christmas and we now have a rather short list of items left to buy and most of them are clothing and stocking stuffers All the canned goods are canned and I still have a few quick things to sew up but all in all not too shabby considering I spent 2 months on the road this summer.

I gave them a short list of items and they still haven't figured it out. I'll either have to go shopping with dh or print out pics

I think if you have the receipt, they should probably take it back. Unless there were clearly posted signs near the candy aisles that it was non-returnable. If it's sealed, it shouldn't be any issue.

I’ve only heard of it since my kid was in kindergarten.. but I’m not a good resource for school aged things prior to that. So I’m not quite sure when it started.
