Headed home and I-85 traffic is horrendous. We get up to speed then have to slow to 40 then repeat. We have done that since we left Atl.
Traffic was a reason we left Saturday morning instead of today. Hope you are home now.
Never mind. I am on speed reading mode trying to catch up the 20 pages I missed. Just had to read the next post to see you were home. 😉

But in 1996 Fran came all the way into Raleigh... I was living there at the time... that was the most scary thing!
Yea, I have heard a lot about that, but, I can't let myself get all wrapped up in it until it is a sure thing. I've got food, milk and bread and loads of Peanut Butter. For water I have plenty of gallon freezer bags that I can fill up when necessary and I bought electric (battery) lanterns if the power goes off and a Coleman Stove to heat stuff with, if the building remains in one piece. I have two daughters that live fairly close and we would probably not all be likely to lose all power with the manner in which we are spread out. I don't want it to come through here and I certainly am not looking forward to it, but I feel confident this far inland that it will have calmed down quite a bit before it gets here. I am keeping a close eye on it and judging by the speed it is moving I can probably walk fast enough to stay ahead of it. ;):)

I checked my DMV and it looks like I can still just use my passport for both domestic and international travel: https://realid.dmv.ca.gov/what-is-real-id-faq/

It says: "If you want to continue to use a U.S. passport, U.S. passport card, military ID, enhanced driver license, or other federally accepted identification to do those things, you do not need to get a REAL ID, however, it is recommended."

And if all I need to do to renew my passport is mail in paperwork, rather than hanging out at the DMV, I think I'll do that instead. ;)

Yep, but, it’s recommended, and I’m covered all the way around with no worries now, so the time was worth it to me. :)

Those things will come in handy... we didn't get power back for a week and we tried to cook eggs on a charcoal grill... it wasn't pretty. I don't remember what else we ate that week... but grilled up everything we had left in the freezer.

Glad to hear it wasn't too bad, but still -- almost 3 hours for you. This whole Real ID thing is beyond a pain in the ****. (Got my new license some months ago -- I went right when the doors opened at my local AAA, so I got out of there in maybe an hour and 15 minutes.) I can think of more fun things to do with that time!

Yea, but, no really big deal to me, as I’m, generally, off at 1p on Fridays anyway. And, my folks picked up DS from work for me...!!! :)

Interesting point, from the convenience aspect; and come to think of it, I only knew one guy who always carried his passport and used it for I.D. (This was over 25 years ago.) He flew international from time to time, and I guess he just kept his passport on him out of habit or whatever.

I think for some people, they're also just trying to avoid an extra fee (for the Real ID processing cost), if they already have a passport. I can understand that, too.

Here there is no increased cost for the real id, as it’s been $25 for a while...

Sandy was not fun I had no power for a week and I was one of the lucky ones! Some I know now own houses in the ocean:(
Sandy was awful. We were stuck in the basement during the entire storm. Thankfully we still had internet; I completed all of my college applications. But still, it was terrible.

If this hits again, I don't intend to stay in the house. We have too many tall trees. I'd grab the cats and go up to my grandma's in PA. Either that or find a pet-friendly hotel nearby. But never again.

My oldest just got her license and to be honest I don’t know if it is a real id or not. Hers looks different than dh’s and mine. It is set up vertically. Dh said it was because she is a minor? Maybe he is wrong. We didn’t pay anything extra though. We didn’t even pay for the actual license. We paid for the permit and I guess because of that they don’t charge for the license. Now I will have to look and see what a real id looks like because hers is up for renewal in 2023.

Yep, minors here are vertical, as well. Either way, real id is indicated by a gold circle with a star inside it.
