I'm going to show my age a little bit here.. but today I bought tickets to see New Kids on the Block (with Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, Salt n Pepa, and Naughty by Nature) I might be a little bit psyched and silly.

The first concert I ever saw was NKOTB with Tiffany opening. With my best friend. She's going this time too!
I was a HUGE Tiffany fan. I wanted so badly to be the next Tiffany. I used to crank up my stereo and sing along into my hairbrush and pretend I was on stage....And dating Jordan from NKOTB.

Thanks. Please share more about why you would do that. Is ACT equally valued/accepted/respected by colleges and universities?
This has probably been answered, but it depends on the school you want to go to. The University of Wyoming, for example, wants ACT, or maybe they will accept either, but the standard in Wyoming is ACT. But some of your Ivy League schools only accept SAT.

That's a good point. There is a college that is the leading possibility w/ my daughter. I could simply ask them if they value one over the other or if to them it doesn't matter.

On a different subject, yesterday in my area we were running the air conditioners. Just in the mid to upper 70s but the humidity made it so uncomfortable. Yet tonight's low will be 52 and the low for the upcoming weekend is predicted to be 43. So I lit the pilot light on my natural gas fireplace. It's ready for the cold weather season. I don't know....it was just such a fast turn around o_O

I saw that this concert was going to be in St. Paul/Minneapolis too and thought it would be fun to go too. I hope you have a good time!

What’s strange to me is this advertising of the AC T scores. I have never seen that before. Obviously with high school when you go to an interview or on shadow day, they’ll tell you their average scores on SAT and AC T’s, but I have passed two signs recently which said the following “Average ACT score of (HS name) students- 32.” That’s it. That’s all the sign says. I’ve never even seen that school advertise before.. then I heard parents talking about promotional material to high schools for their 6th and 7th graders, the 3 schools all highlighted their ACT scores as well.

It’s just odd because I always thought the two were of equal importance.. with the SAT maybe holding a little more weight when it came to certain colleges, but it sounds like that’s a lot different now.

Well, it DOES appear things have changed since I was in High School. (Shocking!! Its only been 20 years...you'd think it would be EXACTLY the same! :P ) It looks like ACT is accepted everywhere now, but I know that wasn't the case when I was in school. I took the ACT because it's the one my school offered, and I'd have had to go 40 miles to take the SAT. Since I was going to a school that wanted ACT, it worked out well. But I DO remember doing PSAT in my sophomore year, to get us used to that level of testing. And I took the ACT both Junior and Senior year, because at that time at least (don't know if it's changed), they accepted whichever one was higher. So if you did better Junior year than senior year, you could turn in the Junior year results. I ended up with the same score both years, but different scores for the different sections. I wish I could have turned in my Junior year Math and English, and Science, and my Senior year Reading.

Wow....I'm actually surprised they are allowed to do that. I would think it would violate privacy laws....maybe they have to sign a waiver or something. Is it meant to get kids to choose their high school? Doesn't it go by zone? Or are these private schools doing this? We only had one high school in my town, so they didn't need to advertise....everyone who lived there went to that school, unless they were homeschooled.

I loved Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. I had a hour bus ride home and I usually spent it listening to their cassette tapes on my Walkman! I was also a fan of NKOTB and one year my sister gave me one of their videos on VHS for Christmas, and I thought I was in heaven watching them.

I know that w/ SAT, if you take it twice, you can pluck out your best math score from one and your best language score from another.....thus combining them for the best possible total score.
Hopefully the ACT is the same in that regard?

In Wisconsin all students are required to take the ACT. This started a couple of years ago, new state law. It is optional for our juniors and sophomores to take the PSAT, but we rarely have students take the regular SAT. The only students that have taken the SAT have been ones that have applied to Ivy League schools.

I think I have won the winter watch prize. @MinnieM123 will be very jealous. Yesterday we had snow flurries. It didn't stick by us, but my husband had to drive about 40 minutes north and it started sticking to the roads. He said the road got a little slick in spots. Even some of the students at school who like snow and going snowmobiling said it was a little to early to see the snow.

Yeah.. it’s a private school.. and apparently they share their avg SAT scores as well with families who are considering applying to the school.. I have no idea if Ohio has laws against that or not, I wouldn’t think so as the sign has been there for about 2.5 months now. I know they shared both of those when I was a kid as well, but not on a billboard.
Admissions testing for all schools is coming up next month I think, I’m assuming that’s why it’s there.

There’s a public school in Cincinnati that had 5 kids get a 36 on their ACT last year. FIVE!! It’s the number 1 public school in Ohio, and I think it’s in the top 100 in the country. You have to test to get in...but it’s still public. Crazy because that specific district- CPS, is horrible, but that school beats any other high school in any of the suburban school districts.

I wasn't super into Debbie Gibson. I liked Electric Youth, but that's the only one I knew. I loved Whitney Houston....the one with The Greatest Love of All...that was the first cassette tape I bought. Then Bryan Adams - Reckless. Then Tiffany, and my first year of Junior High, my friend introduced me to NKOTB. I was a bit late with that. My mom was not at ALL into pop music....the music we listened to at home was stuff like, Oliver, Oklahoma, The King and I... I remember going to a friend's birthday party...it was a roller skating party, so we had to drive into the next town over (40 miles) and in the suburban, her mom had Michael Jackson on, and I had never heard it before, and I was the only one who didn't know the words.

I also remember hearing "Let's hear it for the boy" from Footloose when the local baton twirling class did a routine to it in the parade on the town birthday celebration. I loved that song, but didn't know it was from a movie. So my pop culture knowledge was really weak. When I got into 4th grade, we got a new music teacher, fresh out of college, and one of the things we did periodically was a singalong. She had taken all her favorites and had written out the lyrics, and every once in a while, we had a day where all we did was sing along to them. Kids would get to pick from the ones she had written out and we'd sing them along with the tapes. That's where I learned who Whitney Houston, Bryan Adams, and Tiffany were. I had never heard of White Snake, or Poison, or Bonjovi. Well, I hadn't really heard of ANYONE. It was all new to me.
