Why embarrassed? I'd probably do the same thing.

Thank you for saying that. It makes me feel better. When I got to the school, I said to the principal, "I know this is silly but I've come to take my son home," and he told me he would have done the same thing with his child.

(Unfortunately, his son was in the high school where it all started. I felt so badly for him, having to teach today and keep all our little ones safe while he was worried sick about his own child.)

I went to my son's meet the teacher night in September. He is in first grade and I was shocked how few parents showed up. You would think they wouldn't have given up caring already. But then again, maybe they all had to work or couldn't find a babysitter as you aren't supposed to take your kids.

I'm more inclined to think it's the latter. I always have to take off time from work to go to these conferences and most school events.

We went on lock down my second semester here. We received a text saying, "Active shooter on campus; shelter in place." I was in accounting that day, and we read the text to the professor, who says, "Well, what do you want me to do about it?" and then tried to continue teaching. Meanwhile, none of us were focused and ended up gathering by the windows watching the police come. We were evacuated by SWAT team. Since I was a commuter and my car was right in the lot, I was able to leave. I got off campus and pulled over. My parents were at O's opening day that day, and I couldn't reach them (it took about four hours to reach them). I called my aunt and started crying. She calmed me down over the phone so I was able to drive home. I called a couple of my relatives, who had likely seen it on the news, my bestie's mother, who had already heard and was texting me, and a leader from my religious group so that everyone knew I was fine, since no one knew what was going on at the time.

We found out later that it was someone shooting a BB gun in the woods. Students who later were expelled.

In the world that we live in, where school shootings are more and more common, you really can't be too careful.

I appreciate you sharing that with me. I guess it is better to be cautious and be wrong than to be careless and something bad actually happen. I was extremely impressed with how the schools and the police dealt with this issue today. They didn't create hysteria but actively kept looking for this person until they found him...even if it was a false alarm.

This is a photo of him, by the way. You can see how from a distance witnesses may have jumped to conclusions.

This one was in the evening but I recognize the some parents work then. And I suppose if you are a single parent (which I once was) that you would need a babysitter which might be an issue. I'm hoping that's what it is.
