The only one I'm close to is my step grandfather. I'm not close to either my maternal or paternal grandfathers. My paternal grandfather I've known my whole life, lives 10 minutes from us, but I think he never really knew quite what to do with his grandchildren. We would be together at family get-togethers, and he basically would talk to his sons, and maybe every now and then say something to his grandchildren. My maternal grandfather, who gave us the instruments, I didn't even meet until I was 13. My grandparents were not happy with my mother's life choices and basically cut her off at 19. She married my dad when she was 19, and they didn't even come to her wedding. My mom tried for years and years to repair the relationship, but my grandmother, who was obviously dominant in the relationship, wasn't having any of it. My mom gave up after I was born and they didn't come to the hospital.
We had some contact with her parents after my great grandmother (my grandmother's mother, who made sure she had a relationship with all of her great grandchildren, including us) passed away. My mother maintained a relationship with her younger brother as well. Then, when I was 15, almost 16, my grandmother got sick. We found out it was cancer one day, and the next she was gone. My mom did go to the hospital the day her mother died, even though she herself had just had surgery.
Since my grandmother died, my mom has worked very hard to repair her relationship with her father. Now that the witch her mother is gone, her relationship with her father has gotten much better, but this is the first nice thing her father has really done for us, other than fixing the tractor and such. My mom was crying for a while when we got the instruments.
I don't have much of a relationship with him. He really tries when he's around us, but he's missed most of our lives. I think to some degree the damage is done. But he has a good relationship with my mom, and in the end, that is what's important. And I'm very grateful for my viola, which is now named Emma. (yes I name my instruments. My violin is Lizzie and the piano is Veronica).
