I've been to DL a couple times and am going again a week before the expo. What kind of advice are you looking for? Restaurant? Hotel? I've stayed at the Best WEstern Stovall's Inn (staying there again in August), the Howard Johnson, and the Best WEstern Anaheim Inn, all were good stays. My favorite restaurants are the Plaza Inn, Café Orleans, and Carthay Circle theater. Disneyland is really a special park, I can't wait to see it dolled up for the 60th!

Right now I'm trying to figure out what hotel to stay in. I'm interested in any advice or tips you think would be good for a first-time visitor to hear.

I just read an article about Disney in the New York Times, "Last Task After Layoff at Disney: Train Foreign Replacements." It was written by By JULIA PRESTON. Ashamed of what Disney did American workers in favor of foreigners.

Not making excuses as I am not a fan of this. However, this is common practice nowadays. Including training their replacements. I love my company and they do a lot of good. But they also did something similar. We started to outsource much of our general IT support to Accenture. And these individuals are based out of India. Did something similar to another branch, which is now out of the Philippines.

It is so much cheaper to outsource these roles. Ridiculously cheaper. And when you are a global company and not just an American company anymore, this happens a lot. Again, not exactly a fan but I understand the reasons.

OK, but what about that guy at the next table to you in a restaurant that lets out a silent one. That is the kind of stuff that no one can get away from... heck we create our own. My point was why would anyone give it a second thought, crap is all around us. It's part of being human. Most human mouths are never more then three feet away from our own source. I still, however, do not advocate eating in a bathroom. :joyfull:

It doesn't need to be anything really fancy. I'm just looking for something close and reasonably priced.

I heard the DoubleTree Suites is a nice property out there. And a step down from that, the Hampton Inn gets good reviews, and I am a fan of Hampton in general.

I am big on the strong hotel chains because the product is usually consistent anywhere you go.

The Best Western's I've stayed at are a decent price and not far away. The Stovall's Inn was a little cheaper but a little further away from DL (by like 4 minutes walking) and I think it is closer to the convention center. But the HOJO and the Anaheim inn were nice too and close to DL.

Your adventures were so cool. I'd also do more of that type of exploring if I just had more time down there, although I haven't even considered renting a car over the past maybe 8 years or so. The traffic around the Orlando area is as bad as any city highway, and roads down there are confusing to me. Many years ago, I would drive to various places.

Always wanted to get to Boc Tower. I did, however, get to Cypress Gardens (with my mother ages ago). We saw a water ski show, a bird show, and had a lovely tour of the magnificent gardens. One year, I went to the Florida Citrus Tower and then took the tour of the orchards; it was a whole different world down there. I really liked it. (I'm thinking that maybe the town you're thinking of with the orange smell might have been Clermont, but not positive.) Oh, I've also been to Gatorland; that was a hoot! :hilarious:

Lastly, I just recalled another fun off-road place, and when I went, it was very simply done with no fancy signs, etc. Might have been off some back dirt roads, too. (The signs leading to it were old pieces of wooden boards that they'd hand paint arrows, and "This way to . . ." sorts of directions.) I have a link below that I "think" might be the same place. I was there about 25 years ago, so I'm not positive it's the same place, but I think it might be. At that time, I had a flight in an OPEN cockpit old plane (like a WW II warbird style); they gave me this hood-type hat to wear and goggles. It was a BLAST!! It was a 2-seater plane and gave the best view of the areas we flew over. The link below doesn't show the plane I was in, but again, I was there so long ago--if this is the place I actually visited.

Oh my. That link was just a little bit of aviation Heaven for me! :)
Along with those T-6 Texan trainers and that Corsair, I'm very familiar with the air racer "Precious Metal". Heavily modified P-51 Mustang, with a WWII era 3,200 hp Rolls Royce Griffon engine with contra-rotating props...! :inlove:

I'm not supposed to know about this 'cause it was supposed to be a surprise (it was postponed due to the bad Memorial Day weather), but, the fam had me set up for an hour-long flight over the Texas Hill Country in a WWII era C-47 (DC-3) transport, over that weekend up in Fredericksburg, Texas (hometown of Admiral Chester W. Nimitz and the home of the Museum of the Pacific War). It's been rescheduled for Labor Day...! :)

Dang! :arghh: I didn't get back to it this morning (unlimited FP). I was all caught up at 10:30 last night. What did I miss?

Oh, fiddlesticks! I saw a few people reference a funny, unlimited fastpass thread this morning. Just before I headed out to work I finally found it and could see below it that it had multiple pages. Because I had to run out for my bus, I figured I'd just read it tonight when I got home, and now I just read here that it was taken down. Why is it gone? Were people battling again about how some people like fastpass and some people don't like it? I hate it when a thread is pulled before I can get to read it!! :( I blame work. It interferes with me keeping up with WDW Magic.

I don't know what happened to that thread. Last I looked at it was last night. Someone started a thread claiming they received unlimited fastpasses for celebrating a "special birthday." And let's just say people were having a hard time believing it (I didn't post anything but you can count me among them).

As @Eric1955 said, it started with a person claiming that they got unlimited fastpasses for 15 days awarded to them upon check-in at AKL because it was a special birthday. They also had posted elsewhere that when they booked the 15 day stay, their tickets were comped. There was a mention of a VIP Transportation pass (not sure what that is). And a side discussion of the MK and HS hitting phased closure on Memorial Day weekend. Despite numerous people stating that 'unlimited' fp+ are not possible in the new system (CMs can only add them 3 at a time, even in extreme situations) and CMs chiming in about the parks not reaching ANY phased closure that weekend, the OP continued to argue and call those who doubted the truth of their information numerous names (one quite offensive). Somehow this went on for 16 pages.

Not sure why, but I got involved (those of you who know me from the past 6 years here know that I rarely getting into arguments) for the purpose of trying to stop the name calling and bring logic to the discussion. When I then got attacked, I defended myself. I tried my hardest to be nice and keep things very cordial, but right at the end was told by the OP that I was lying and now fit into the 'troll and hater' category with everyone else who had doubted the amazing succession of events.

My last post was about 9:30am this morning (graduation day = not a whole lot of teaching going on!!) where I apologized for any errors in my statements and asked to not be considered a 'troll and hater.' Sadly, I then had to go teach. Thread was gone at 11am.

Way too cool! Last trip my younger ds spent about 1/2 an hour talking with a retired engineer from there, my little guy was picking his brain about where to go to college and how to get a job in engineering for NASA.

Awesome!!!
Chances are probably pretty good y'all have seen these before, but, here are links to two of my favorite old Disneyland TV shows from 1955...! :)
