You would like today's temperatures at my parents house. While it was the lows 80s today, My parents claimed the upstairs for their house was in the 100s.
I would never buy a home in a very hot climate with a second floor. Even with the central AC running , the second floor will not be as comfortable as the first floor of the house. For the ones in the country who have basements that is a cooler place to be minus the dampness.

That's an interesting point. Since (as a tourist), I've only seen a small part of Florida, I'm wondering -- do houses down there (in general) tend to be only one floor, but maybe wider to allow for more space?

There are two story homes but a challenge to keep the second floor as cool as the first floor since heat rises. I'd say 50/50 ? Single story and two story homes. I've seen 3 story homes old colonial types in the North and those homes I've seen have only window unit ACs in select rooms of the house.

We've rented several places with 2 floors and found the 2nd floor to be the cooler in a couple of them. Dh turns the air up too high IMHO hence the need for me bringing a few extra blankets down
