I never thought about not having direct debit. It gives me peace of mind knowing all my bills will be paid on time and taken out the day after I get paid. The bills are the same each month except the water bill which is calculated every 3 months but I get an email from the water company telling me how much will be taken out of my account a few days before hand.
I do have my banking apps on my phone and check my accounts very regularly to make sure all is in order.
I have all my financial transactions on Quicken. When I use my Debit Card I always get a receipt come home and record it on Quicken. All my Credit Cards are home sited on my computer and I print out the monthly statement and set it up for payment exactly on the due date. Not automatic (although I could do it that way) because I want to have control of it and a record of everything. When I use my Credit Cards I always get a receipt and I use it to reconcile the statement. I check those accounts, Bank and Credit, daily on line to make sure that nothing is happening that I am not aware of.

As far as the Bank accounts I have my three accts. Reg. Savings (not much in there just enough to be thought of as a member of the credit union). I don't keep much in it because It pays minor amounts of interest. Then I have my Checking (Debit) that like I said I update as transactions exist and then a Money Market account for the rest of my cash (both pay monthly interest). Every month I reconcile my records with the bank statement and I would never go back to using a physical hand written record. It's all on computer and reconciliation is both fun and quick. I think I stated before that I write only one regular check a month and that is for the Apartment Complex utilities. Rent and Car lease as well as phone and TV accounts are stable so they are automatic, no thought required.

I do watch all those accounts closely (why not, I've got nothing else to do) and that includes my retirement account online with my brokerage firm. I have to admit that has proven to be depressing at times, however, I always know where it is in value. Now that I am over 70, I am required by law to take money out every year, so I am trying to plan that out carefully as well. Being retired, it gives me something productive to do and has become kind of fun.

I think the planning aspect is great for people who love to plan details. So I have nothing against that. We're all different.

Now, for peeps like me that prefer to just "go with the flow" and have no set schedule for vacation, I ignore the pre-trip planning. I tend to follow the Mr. Magoo approach -- walking under ladders, with a paint bucket falling and just missing my head by an inch. Works for me! :D

Yep, different strokes, and all.
My point was simply that, as I’ve been reading around these boards, more and more folks are overly stressed about planning an upcoming trip, or happenings during a recent trip. If you’re going to be that stressed, I just don’t see that as a proper vacation, IMO.
I also understand that many folks enjoy the planning aspect of a trip to a Disney Park (or anywhere for that matter), and look at it as part of the adventure.
Some just want to go lay on a beach for a week, and wing the rest...not a whole lot of planning involved there...!!! ;)
For all of our Disney trips we did planning, but, not to the nth degree.
There just seems to be so much more planning needed ahead of time to get to ride what you want, eat where you want, etc.
As I’ve posted many times before, we are all life-long Disney fans, regardless of how many times we do, or do not, visit their Parks. We will be back to WDW in a few years, maybe less. DWifey wants to go back more than any of us, but, every time she prices out a trip she gets stressed...!!!
Again, I respect that many folks enjoy the planning, but, just reading about how many get so stressed out about the planning stresses me out...!!!!! :hilarious:;)
So, I can also totally respect your Mr. Magoo (or anything in between) approach, as well...!!! :geek:

Really...?!?!?!
Then, I won’t even ask when the last time the USA did something you could be proud of was.
Not that long ago...like I said, I'm proud of certain things. I'm proud of the Women's Soccer team, who are doing really well in the World cup, and they've worked so hard to get the recognition. I'm proud of them for representing, and working hard....they show integrity and motivation.

I'm a veteran and currently am embarrassed by what is happening here in our country. I don't owe pride or respect to anything or anybody until they or it gives me reason to do so. When I enlisted in the service I took a vow to protect and defend the constitution. It seem like I am the only one that cares anymore.
I agree with you 100%. But I'm still proud of you, and the other men and women who have fought for our country, and who have made a lot of sacrifices for the good of the people. But I think you can be proud of that, without being proud of EVERYTHING. Like...you can be proud of your kids, for how successful they are, and their accomplishments, without being proud of every decision they've made. So that's why I make the distiction that I'm proud of certain things, but as a whole, I'm embarrassed by the way some things are going. I just got an email last week warning me to stay away from the Consulate in Amsterdam on Tuesday, because there were going to be protests there, and it could be dangerous for Americans. It makes me sad that I'm warned to stay away from an area just because of where I was born....that that's necessary. So like you, I don't feel like I owe it to the country to be proud until they give me a reason to be.

I agree, I am specifically talking about the country and some of the people in it. Unfortunately, unlike being proud of my children even though I don't always feel good about decisions they have made, the decisions that they make will not affect millions of people and the attitude toward us for years to come. This is a much bigger thing.

I now am proud of my time in the service, but, until recently I never told anyone about it because Vietnam was not exactly a loved conflict. I was blamed along with my fellow servicemen for the decisions made in that miserable country as if any of us had a say in it. Recently (within the last 10 years) I have been able to feel the I did my part for the country, the same country that didn't seem to care if we died or not because of some vague reason. However, when I saw that it seemed to be a catalyst in us improving things like civil rights, human rights, acceptance of people that were different then us, I was proud and willing to overlook some of the mistakes made by our leaders. Now in such a short time, it seems like we have gone so many steps backward due to self centered leadership that I know I will not live long enough for all the damage to be repaired.

We no longer have the right to stand in judgement or to point out the faults of other nations because we are now the people that the world is looking down at. We have allowed ourselves to become the laughing stock of the world. There is no end to the anger that causes me.

I just want to say to all the parents here, my hat's off to you.
I am genuinely exhausted looking after my brother's kids.
My brother and his wife don't have help around where they live so I've tried to give them a break by taking care of the kids but it's just none stop. I've read half a book in a week's time while normally I read a book a day on holiday. Don't get me wrong, I love the kids and enjoy getting to spend time with them but the youngest ones have so much energy they never sit still and the teenager just rolls his eyes at 99% of what I'm saying. I'm seriously baffled how so many kids make it to adulthood... ;)
