OMG . . . those two articles. Yikes! :jawdrop:

That second article is a bit sensational. You can start a car when a fob is dead, you just hold it up to the ignition button. You can get in the doors with the valet key.

If you don’t have your fob at all then that’s the equivalent of forgetting/losing your keys, which is not something exclusive to smart keys.

Imo, one of the most amazing features of an advanced smart key is that it’s impossible to lock your keys in the car! (not every push button start will have this feature, anything upper trim level will)
I’ve locked my keys a few times when I was younger, prior to smart key days. So glad that can never happen again! That, and being able to use my app or tell Alexa to start my car or unlock my car. priceless.

Yea, I'm currently still drivin' that '03 Malibu.
I'll find out the battery in the fob is low or dead one mornin' when I go out to the car and it won't open the doors.
Then, "Hello old-school key!"
Other than power locks and windows, the fob is about the only other "bells and whistles" that car has...!!!!! :hilarious:;):)

Power windows? Wow, that is high tech. Ours are roll-ups! :p

If I understood a few others here correctly, sometimes they were unable to find the location of an actual key (or "valet" key as you mentioned). That's even when it's supposed to be inside a fob, or something like that.

However, a few others said something similar to your comment about putting the dead key fob near the start button, and the car may still start.

For now anyway, I'm glad I drive my old 2007 clunker. My little metal key has not let me down yet. ;)

I had a pretty good day today. Last week I cashed in Disney Movie Rewards for the Walt Disney Studios tour and today I was notified that they are able to accommodate us for a date on our June trip! This is so exciting!
You know, I have enough rewards for that tour too. I would prefer something more useful, like a park pass, or a gift card. They usually offer only $10 ones. Of what use is that in the World of Disney? When they started they had nice artwork available. I used rewards on a canvas of a limited edition Mickey. But now points are just accumulating. I am happy for you though. I always thought it sounded cool. I think when they had the radio Disney station at the then MGM, they offered tours of it.

I don’t know why anyone would ever take their key out.. it’s connected to the top of the fob. Strange, but yeah, that could happen if someone dissected their key fob lol.

I will tell you that I know someone who started their car remotely, got in with the fob and pushed the button, then ran back inside and set their key down. Drove to work, turned the car off, went to go to lunch and realized the key was at home. Had to wait to drive until wife could bring it later. 🤦‍♀️🙄🤣
That situation can not happen with a key that must be in the ignition!!

I have noticed that rewards have changed, and honestly I haven't been interested in much of anything else besides the tour. I also think we might be buying less of the movies with Disney + coming out. And I was thinking that with Disney+ maybe the rewards system might get phased out. It worked out with our trip in June, we are actually staying about 10 minutes away from the Studio for part of the trip.

My car will not drive unless the fob is in the car. Like if the fob is in my pocket but dh is driving, if I get dropped off in front of the supermarket and don’t take it out of my pocket, the car won’t drive. If I accidentally leave the fob in the car and slam the door the car will beep a warning.

Phased out? If that is the case I may start collecting gift cards.

I love that the car beeps when the key is left in, I think that’s the biggest advantage to them... I had never realized someone could drive if the key was taken out, I knew they would still run, but never saw someone drove to work without their key, until about two months ago. 😂

The only reason I posted the two articles I did was purely in regards to the theft aspect, nothing else.
I just found it interesting, how even with all the new tech, thieves can still find a way to circumvent it and drive off with your ride without even having to break into it.

I had my last car so long that I actually wore the key on my chain down to the point that it wouldn’t turn the ignition switch, and had to start using the spare, and get another spare made...!!!!! :D

Every time I use my key fob now though I think of this thread...!!!!! :hilarious:

How was your weekend @Tony the Tigger ?

Busy at both stores. 😊

Busy at home.

This week will be a marathon until we get to Marathon (Key.) 🤣

Finalized the hotel and the termite guy this morning. Setting plans in motion for “plussing” both stores by the 18th when the coalition comes to check them out, and the industry convention the following week. (Offered the guys running it to offer 15% off for all attendees. They accepted. Great PR there!)

Started packing up non-canned goods. Brian mowed the lawn 🙄 while I was at my store.

Gearing up for the eye doctor tomorrow afternoon, a store meeting Wednesday morning, cleaning up for houseguests arriving Thursday and termite walkthrough on Friday. (We have to disassemble part of the deck by then.)

Remembered to put a hold on the mail while we’re away, forgot to pay one store’s rent.

I’m leaving out about a hundred things. Heading to the gym in a bit. On a roll there, lately. Lost 4 pounds while building up in the right places lol.

I’d love to find time for my TR’s! Met several WDWMAGIC folks already this year.

Whining... so you may want to ignore me.... I caught a horrible coughing cold that some of my co-workers have had for over 3 weeks... I fly in 2 weeks to MN... I need this cold to go away faster!
Sorry. I was at an Orioles game last week and this guy next to me coughed all over me. Didn't cover his mouth. I felt him cough on me. I moved away from him, but still caught the cold. Finally went to the doctor and got an antibiotic today since it wasn't going away.
