According to our weather people who I have as much faith in as the rodent we're not going below freezing for at least a week, most likely longer but the yellow orb I keep hearing about is not even going to try and make an appearance until next Monday
At least you may get it Monday. I think there is rain listed for every day in the next week! This is ridiculous. Does the sun even exist? Yeah, I know. In Guernsey.

I didn't even file this year. I didn't have enough taxable income to owe anything, I hadn't paid anything in advance into the IRS so my refund was zero. I tried that company that advertised FREE, FREE, FREE but since I had some investment accounts that, thanks to "the greatest economy ever", didn't do all that well last year, so in order to file, which I was planning to do in spite of that, the FFF place was willing to charge me $40.00 to file. Free, must have a definition a little different then I remember being taught. Anyway, being over 70, not enough income from outside sources, no refund, I decided to just not file since from what I understand saves us all a lot of useless paperwork. The government already knows every bit of income I have anyway. If they send me to jail, it will eliminate my needing to find a new apartment this year, and save me tons in food and other, cost of freedom, expenses. :D
Sounds good to me.

The biggest bummer is you always owe taxes, but this past year you paid ALL YEAR and they still wanted more at filing! VS giving you a few pennies back when filing!
This was our case for years while on payroll. Now we have our own business, and like @Goofyernmost did (or didn't)this year, we didn't prepay any tax this year, and don't prepay anymore. We put a hefty % of all revenue into a separate account, and then pay our tax in full on "April 15th". It would blow your mind NOT to pay throughout the year, have the entire tax balance due, and then stroke that huge check at one time. Wonder if we would revolt on April 15th if everyone paid this way?

The IRS, aka the "man" knows how important it is for taxes to come direct for people's payroll check(s) as one tends not to feel it during the year, and pays more attention to "bring home" pay. The same "tend not to feel it" works with investing and direct deposit straight from payroll.
I always noticed. Technically when you get a refund, you overpaid. Sometimes I think it is better to wait til taxes are due so you don't give too much of your money away to the govt., but yes it is easier to lose a little at a time instead of a lot.

I've heard this mentioned here and there... but what's everyones opinion on packing cubes? I bought some awhile ago.. but never used them, but with our new luggage coming, I decided I want to give them another try. I watched a bunch of youtube videos on cube packing yesterday, but all the people were like size 3.... and i'm pooh size.... so wondering if any pooh size people find them useful?
Never used them. I can see how they could be useful though.

Sending positive vibes to your DS, and you!
Thank you! It's over now, for better or worse. I think it was better than he expected. When I asked him how it went, he just gave me an apathetic shrug. He didn't seem at all nervous that he wasn't able to answer any questions, and the only thing he really mentioned in detail was a "3D" H, that he had to use the dimensions to calculate how much would fit inside of it (sounds like he meant calculate the volume), and he calculated the middle bar incorrectly and came up with a number that wasn't one of the choices, so he knew he had done something wrong and had to go back and figure out what that was. But he's confident that he ended up coming up with the right answer once he recalculated the middle beam.
He was specifically nervous about his handwriting. He has really really bad handwriting and it's so hard to read. We've been working on it in physical therapy, and the PT said actually, he should not be writing in cursive because it is the most prone to being illegible. So we talked with the teacher, and DS has been practicing printing. The PT said for whatever reason, DS's old school only taught cursive...kids never learned to print, and apparently they are the only school that does this. (DD confirmed that now she's in high school, no one could read her writing because she wrote in cursive and all the other kids only learned print) The PT said he gets a lot of kids from that school who have difficulty with writing in cursive so he's been getting those kids to learn to print. So DS was worried that he hasn't been practicing printing very long...only a couple of weeks, and his cursive is illegible. What if they couldn't read his writing on the open questions? So we talked with the teacher and she checked his handwriting and had him rewrite anything that she couldn't read. Now we wait for 4-5 weeks and then we get the results. They don't really matter anymore, but I am curious and he feels like it's an important measure for him. I am sure the results will be fine and will reassure him that he's still a smart kid.

Further chronicles of weird stuff that happened to SWG...

Around the time that I accepted this job, another job I applied for sent me one of those notifications that was likethanks but no thanks.

Yesterday I got an email from them, two weeks later, "We sent that email out in error and we wanted to set you up with a phone screen."

Oh the sweet satisfaction to email back and say, "Oh thanks, but I've accepted another job."

You have a work doctor, and that person calls?
Sorry about the miscommunication, but doctor from work? Wow.
It's hard to explain...we have nothing like that in the US that I know of. But basically, there is a doctor that deals with any work-related injuries, burn out, etc. When you call in sick, they call you to check and see what the nature of your illness is, and they also make sure you aren't milking the system, calling in sick for fake illnesses. Some people call in sick for a hangnail, you know? So they call to check and see if it's a work related thing, or if it's just a bug or something more long term that will keep you out of work for a while. And if you have a burn out, you meet with them periodically, check in to talk about what's going on. DH had a burn out when I was pregnant with DD. We were in the process of moving into our own house, I was pregnant, the company he worked for was unstable and he had been afraid he might lose his job, his dad had something...I don't even remember what, but there was just a bunch going on, so he got leave to sort through it all, and he had to meet with this doctor now and then and that doctor worked with DH's employer to determine how long of a leave he needed and how quickly to build back up his hours when he went back.

So basically, she called to check up on me, and my employer had signed me in as "sick", though it wasn't ME who was sick, it was DS, and they apparently weren't supposed to write me in as sick. So the lady was telling me I should have done this and that, but I couldn't and it wasn't MY mistake, it was my employer.

We've used them and we're more than 3 people. Size 3?

That would violate so many HR laws here. If you take an unplanned day off, at least for my company, it can be for illness, for your kid's illness, or because it was a nice day and you didn't feel like coming to work, or it can be a mental health day. They literally will not ask. It just comes out of your PTO bucket. Obviously, you don't want to do this too much because then they will start looking into it, but they give you leeway. The exception is if you take three days off in a row unplanned; then they'll ask for a doctor's note, though they're reasonable, so I think if it were that your kid were sick, they'd overlook it.

I live and breathe by my packing cubes, LOL. They keep everything organized. I roll up complete outfits and put them in the cubes, which compress them. So I can fit more stuff in the same space. And because I roll up outfits, I can grab and go in the morning.

Something else that has really helped also is something called a travel capsule wardrobe. I can't really do this for Disney because of the shirts, but the idea is that every top you bring can go with every bottom you bring, so you don't have to bring as many clothes. 5 tops that match all 5 bottoms make more outfits than you can wear in one trip.
