My sales gig is new homes. While I've been doing that for almost 26 years, prior to that I was a regular real estate agent (I think you call them realtors).

Here's the crazy bit. My brother is a trained house inspector. He paid big bucks and took all the courses and seminars, but decided the job was not for him. Nonetheless, I was a little surprised that he was even considering today's first house. Like most buyers, he was distracted by the "pretty, shiny things" and not looking at the fundamentals.

I think it's just human nature to be distracted by the pretty, shiny things. I've fallen for that, myself (not in real estate--I don't own any property), but just in general, I guess. Attractive things are hard to resist!

Overheard in Walmart* last night:
Little girl (about 4): Okay Mommy, you be Anna. I'll be Elsa.
Mommy: When do I get to be Elsa?
Little Girl: You're the Mommy. You have to be Anna. All my friends' mommies are Anna.
Mommy: Why does the Mommy have to be Anna?
Little Girl: Just, just, just BECAUSE.

Truth be told, I don't want to be Anna either. I'm an Elsa!

* - first time I've been to Walmart in years (Tammy and I were way too early for Cinderella, so we were killing time.) When did they put these ginormous grocery stores in there? Fresh meat and produce and all kinds of stuff. Crazy!
Ours has been a SuperWalmart for as long as I can remember.

All too common to be distracted by the "look" of the house instead of the structure. "Look" can be a cheap easy fix...structural problems...not so much. When I've sold houses (not as an agent) I was always amazed when potential buyers would talk about the color of the walls or the "decor is not their style". Really? Paint is cheap and the decor is leaving with me.
And congrats on getting you brother a house! BTW, I'd ask the showing agent for a reimbursement of the dime ;)

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.

When Hubby first started working with me, he wanted to push the energy efficiency of the homes, the upgraded furnaces, the EnergyStar windows.
I told him, "Don't bother. They don't care. Push the hardwood, the granite, the undermount sink, the over-sized basement windows, the oversized porcelain tiles. Pretty shiny things."

He tried his way. For a week.

While you have to know all the other stuff, the less glamourous details and mechanicals, you have to promote what your audience is looking for. Elsewise, why would the Builder bother with thousands and thousands of dollars worth of goodies?

I sprayed for weeds in my yard today. Ugh. What a pain. This is only the second full season for my lawn. Weeds were everywhere. disaster! Going to cut and fertilize later this week because we are finally past the cold temperatures. Very late this year.

I have an idea for you. Get rid of the grass and do what WDW does: put in that astroturf stuff! :hilarious: Apparently, it's good enough for the MK . . .

I feel your pain. Weeds are a PITA. What part of the country are you in?

Sadly, weed killer is banned in Ontario.
If you try to smuggle it in from Quebec or the U.S., it will be confiscated, and you could be fined. Big bucks.
Thank you Nanny State, Liberal Premier. Not!
