I posted this before, but an actual phone call is very unusual for me. Usually, if my manger wants to talk to me, she either comes out to my desk and sits in the cubicle next to mine (which is empty most days) or she send me a Skype message (we have Skype for Business) and asks me to come in her office when I have a moment. Most of the time, if my phone rings, it's either the front desk receptionist, a manager who is remote, or my mother. It's not unusual for my manager to email me, but usually, it's because she wants to provide written instructions for an assignment, I emailed her because I saw she was in a meeting and didn't want to forget what I had to tell her and she's just quickly responding, or she needs to tell me something for when I get there the next day.
Calls at work are rare for me. Truth be told, I prefer it that way. Part of my job is administering our project management system. We have it very controlled; we don't allow managers to set up their own projects, we don't allow people to add new team members on their own...I have to do it. Any time there's a problem, they come to me. Mostly, they email or they send me a Skype message (usually email for new projects and new contractors/employees since there's a form to fill out). I can prioritize, or even handle several at once. This week I had three Skype messages come through at once. I could answer one, then while that person was responding, handle another...it would have been hard if they had all called me at once. Not to mention having managers spread out throughout the world makes email and Skype a bit more effective than the phone.
I find it interesting how technology use differs from company to company with the culture. In a company as large as ours, it even varies from department to department. I'm in the IT department. Everyone adopts the new technology pretty quickly. A long-time family friend told me that she never uses Skype at work because "This is work; we don't Skype." I told her soon she'll have to since Skype for Business is replacing another program we've used in the past for remote meetings. She still doesn't grasp the concept that all of this software we're using is for business. Hopefully this won't hinder the adoption process we're trying to do right now.
