Which is fine as long as you don't have to have a car anyway. If you do you still have the cost of the vehicle, maintenance, auto insurance and gas (although less). So having one, if you do the math still costs you even if it is sitting in the yard. Add to that the cost of public transit and I'm not sure one is saving much in the line of money. Not having to drive is really the only incentive and time not sitting in traffic is also motivation, but, I never minded commuting unless there was terrible weather and then I would have liked to have been on the rail. Anything else provided the same anxiety. For inner city people that have no inclination to go anyplace outside of the range of public transportation it's a no brainer. For people like me, it would be just an added expense.

When I worked DT CHI we were able to have one car vs 2. Big savings. Also the type of car you need for appropriate transportation to go to and from work everyday is different from getting around town to accomplish errands or a bite to eat. It maybe different where you live but our auto insurance is invoiced by the type of vehicle, age and the amount of miles driven per year. I have a 4x4 truck which are expensive to insure however greatly discounted because I work out of my home and drive 0 miles to work each day.

It's been a weird day today, I went to my great aunt's funeral today. She passed away last Thursday, she was probably the kindest and most giving woman that I've ever known. She was 94 so it wasn't totally unexpected but until the last year she still lived on her own and lived independently. The service was really nice but the weird part was afterward my uncle (who was really cruel to my mom) tried to be all buddy buddy with my sister and I. :grumpy: We didn't make a scene as it wasn't the day for that but we left shortly after. We felt we had paid our respects but didn't want to deal with family drama.
