I had a rule that any candy collected could not be eaten until I looked at it. Easier said than done when I walked with them when they were smaller. I showed them how to determine safe candy (air in the chocolate packing) so if they opted to ignore my rule they would know what to look for.

When I was small there was the razor blades in apple thing and drug laced candy, most of which was debunked just like the kiddie tattoos that had drugs laced into them. My folks nor I ever let the kids have anything that was homemade or not commercially packaged.

I sorted their candy by what I could identify as commercial wrapping not being compromised. Anything with the tiniest tear tossed. Then I let them pick out what they would not eat and either took it to work or DH took it to work. To pass out candy I only buy stuff that we will eat the left overs. :hungry:

You did everything correctly, in this day and age.

I guess where I grew up, we must have been lucky. Most people would give us candy bars, but we also went to a house where the people gave out pop corn, that was still warm from their popper with butter on top :hungry:. Another house served us scoops of ice cream in small cups. The father in another house worked at the big wholesale fruit exchange in Boston, and he'd bring home cases of apples, so we'd all grab an apple from that house. Other people would give us small bags of mixed candy with "loose" candy corn, hard candies, and licorice sticks. None of the above ever had anything wrong with it, and we never gave it a second thought. Sigh . . . memories.

All this talk of sweeteners takes me back to the time we made molasses from a crop of sugar cane one of my grandfathers grew one year.
Good times...! :hungry: :)

I love molasses! It's not all that popular anymore. My grandmother came from the old country (Ireland) and she used to put some on a slice of bread and give it to us as a treat. I kinda liked that as a kid, but I far preferred it "straight up" right out of the bottle!

Saturday,we took a ride to Salem, MA. It's about an hour and a half drive from Sagamore Beach. So close to halloween I knew the place would be hopping. And WOW, was it ever! Disney crowds have nothing on Salem. I was bumped, hit, shoved, and I do believe I was inappropriately touched at some point...but it's been a while so not too sure. Anyway, it was great fun! Going to try and go back again this weekend but I want to hit the Witch Museums and tour the cemeteries. After all...it is part of our great nation's history.

Live in MA, and have been to Salem many times over the years. It wasn't so crowded years ago, except on Halloween, itself. Then it was completely nuts and we had a great time! Everyone was in full costume (I dressed up as a witch). I recall a fun party at some upstairs bar venue, at a restaurant. A guy tried to pick me up, but I said no thanks. (The guy was dressed up as a wolf! Ha! That was an appropriate costume for his behavior!) I was there with a guy I was dating at that time; and I think the wolf was probably so drunk, he didn't even notice I was being escorted around the party by a pirate! :jawdrop: :joyfull:

The Halloween activities in Salem are a bit more organized now than in the past; I think I prefer the less-structured approach of years ago. (We used to just free-range the city, stopping in restaurants, bars, and stores.) However, with the size of the crowds increasing in later years (some due to the advertising effort put out by the city), they had to organize outdoor events, and parties in bars, etc., a bit better.

If you really want to enjoy the museums, witch house, etc., you should go at some time other than Halloween. There's so much fascinating history to see there, and it's much better when you aren't dealing with noise and crowds. Also, I highly recommend the House of the Seven Gables to tour. Nearby that on Derby Street, is one of my favorite candy companies, Ye Olde Pepper Candy Companie (note the old spelling), which has been there since 1806. They have some candy recipes they still make of things you've probably never heard of, while also making delicious chocolates and fudge. :hungry: :hungry:

So my interview today where I got fingerprinted...big campus but the job I was going for was the the middle of town. Why? Wouldn't it make sense to have all departments in one area? I was told my interview was going to be in the HR building so totally didn't expect that.

Anyway. I got lost. Their directions were horrible. And turns out the department was in a strip mall. And because of that, I'm not holding my breath for this job.

Like seriously, your a multi-billion dollar company and you can't add a couple rooms or another floor to an existing building.

Sounds a bit like the hospital complex where I work. They have offices, labs, etc. all over the place, even in neighboring cities. That's the problem with big organizations; they get too big!!

I get a kick out of some real old people who pick out real obscure candy that is a long time favorite of theirs to hand out at Halloween. One 90 year old lady down the road always had polish candy, hard candy with some fruit goo in the center. She paid a mint for the this stuff being an import so the kids would have a special treat. Little did she know the kids were not amused, she never had kids.

I'll take it!

Last winter a 45 minute commute turned into 2 hours and it was barely snowing. Ok, so it was a winter storm warning but still the snow just started falling.

Yep, snow is sucidoodles. I find it is worse when it just starts to snow before the salt trucks get a coating down.

4 hours up Rt 57 after my DDs Graduation last December, that segment of the trip is usually 2 or 2.5 hours depending on traffic. We were behind 3 plows spreading salt, one in each lane staggered that nobody was getting around them, they were going about 35 mph. Had to take my Mom home, by the time we finally got home it was likely a 6 hour trip in the snow.

My soul is in a warm weather climate.

University of IL is 3 square miles of campus. They still rent or own massive houses just off campus, rent from strip malls even have offices stuffed into the down town district. Their special services are in old 2 flats for things like Indian Services, Minority Affairs, Students with Disabilities etc.

I drove my DD down to Illinois State a few weeks ago, plopped myself in a coffee shop while she went for an interview and a test to see if she had a brain. Her test was in a strip mall, shared with a grocery store.

Hope it goes well, fingers crossed. My DD next interview is Thursday and then next Tuesday 4 freak'n hours away in the middle of dead corn and dead soy beans.
