I also enjoyed
@ajrwdwgirl 's photos of the pup. Years ago, I never understood the bootie and jacket thing for dogs--they had fur and I thought that was enough. However, came to learn in later years that in the more extreme cold, vets actually recommend for most dogs (not necessarily huskies, mals, or samoyeds that thrive in the cold), to have a sweater/jacket when outside.
As for booties, those can really help keep their paws protected if they walk anywhere that salt has been put down (roads, etc.). They can also stop their paws from freezing in icy, snowy conditions. Take for example, the Can Am Crown International Dog Sled Race (it's up here in the Northeast--border of Maine and Canada). We've seen it a few times over the years, and I copied a photo (not mine--coped from their web site) from the 2014 race. The musher has put booties on all his dogs. Depending upon the temperature in any given year, you'll see many of the dogs wearing those. And the Can Am is serious business for the U.S. and Canadian entrants, as it is (one of) the 250-mile races that qualifies the winner for a possible entry into the Iditarod. Not sure how the scoring goes, but it is a qualifier. Winner of the Can Am gets $29,000.
