I was at a craft fair in a high school yesterday. There were 4 sax players preforming Christmas carols. One was good, the other three kinda reminded me of 4th grade beginning band. Sadly they were not meshing well with each other, same piece different styles. It wasn't pretty. Plus the school had tiled concrete block walls, tiled floor, pretty narrow space and they had a portable amp to project, distorted, made pretty bad sound even worse. I was actually thinking of @brifraz as I was walking the halls yesterday.
EEEKKKKKKK I hope it was for a good cause

Im probably going to watch star wars 2 weeks after the release. Just to see the 'hype" calm down.
Also, I hate super full cinema rooms (noisy people and kids are my pet peeve in a cinema).
I never get to watch movies without kids even my own home except for when lifetime or Hallmark movies. They can clear a room fast:cautious: BTW it may take more than 2 weeks for the hype to die down, it took about a month for Star Trek to be not so crazy around here

well, it helps that I usually to the cinema in the last hours(as in almost noone wants to see movies at that hour) ;)

Seen similar quite a few times - there's one really ambitious and excited player who recruits a group to perform for an event like this. The practice their butt off, but the other 3 kids never practice. The ambitious and excited player only hears themself when they finally do get together to practice and nothing ever gets good. As a teacher, you don't want to diminish the primary kid's enthusiasm and you are hoping that it will rub off on the other three. And, when it doesn't...you just hope that people realize these are just kids and they are trying...and then you cringe.

BTW - portable amp + and wind instrument = :devilish::hungover::banghead:

Yes, the portable amp we just wanted to unplug. These were high school jazz band students, 3 of them just sounded as if they were beginning band students.

As I attempted to listen to the one student she was actually very good. More she was thinking I put in the time and work and I'm going to do the best I can despite being paired with the other 3 students. She would have been a good soloist but our schools never ever ever send just one student to these open door events and they are instructed to stay together.

There are a couple high school districts in the NW Suburbs of Chicago that holds craft fairs at their high schools, some for over 30 years. They have some excellent crafters that travel to come to these high school events and they keep getting bigger. Between the $3-4 admission, selling booth space and their concession stand along with boosters selling high school 'wears' it is very profitable.

Staff volunteers their time one Saturday a year (plus what they do to pull this off in advance, it is split up) and all proceeds are split up for Sports, music and activities additional funding beyond what the budget provides. It is the only fund raiser in most of these schools, it is that attended, usually a line to get in. That admission alone really adds up. The students do a pre order of concession food for vendors, about 400 of them and deliver food and beverages to them. From what I've heard from the parents and staff they are happy to do this mega event 'cause they don't have to sell anything to raise funds and the profit margin is nearly 100%. Parents don't have to have their kids buying entertainment books, frozen pizzas, cheese cakes or push market day carts around every month. Our school district had tried this. Not well received. You have to have good vendors for success, not the bazaar type.
