Going back to the conversation about JoAnne's yesterday, I was lying in bed thinking about it (to our teens here... don't go into accounting if you want this to be your life...) and this is a good example of a company showing "profit" and having warning signs of being in bad shape before they go under.

Starting with their income statement...

Highlighted orange section for 2022... they're making a profit, so you automatically think "oh, that's good." But you look at Net sales, and they dropped in 2022 compared to 2021. Also, the cost of sales and Selling, General, and Administrative Expense (SG&A or Overhead) didn't decrease at an equivalent rate. Red flags there.

Then the other statement that I always check is the Statement of Cash Flows. A business that doesn't have cash can't pay their liabilities and therefore can't continue. The three sections of this statement are Operating, Investing, and Financing. A healthy company will have cash generated by operating activities. Cash is used by Investing and Financing activities, though sometimes cash is generated by investing.

If you have one year where cash is used by operating activities but then provided by investing activities, fine, that's usually a company that's growing, and it happens. You just don't want to see that for too long. 2022 is a giant red flag because cash is negative in both operating and investing and then generated by financing. That's not sustainable.

Which brings me to my three rules that you should remember when discussing finances (or going into News and Rumors)

1. A business not making a net income doesn't mean it's doing poorly
2. A business making income doesn't mean it's doing well.
3. Covid years are not an indicator for how a business will do in the future.

Also, those who try to say Disney is going bankrupt (yes I've seen this) have no clue what they're talking about.

Does anyone know why I can’t delete posts from this thread? the only reason why I’m replying to an empty box is because I can’t delete it for some reason.

If memory serves, after you have posted things you cannot completely delete them, all you can do is fill in the space with unrelated gibberish. You can delete the entire thing, including quotes if you do it before you actually post it. or as some people do delete your post and quote and then put an . or a ? or a # in the empty space and move on.

I don't know why, but years ago, the mods changed Chit Chat, and only chit chat, so you can't delete your posts on threads.

If you double post by accident, a lot of people just put some periods, like ... when they edit. Personally, I think that's lame when I can post a cat picture instead. 🙃

You have no idea how nice it is to hear this. We’re at max doom and gloom in the wsj thread. I guess what I’m trying to say is a little reality goes a long way.
Yeah, I joined when I was your age, and it was jarring to go into N&R and hear the doom and gloom.

The thing I've since learned is that there are a lot of armchair analysts who have absolutely no idea what they're talking about about. Some of what they're saying is correct (you'll notice I've commented up there) but when they're like "Disney is going bankrupt!" ... that's just so far out in left field. And there's no sense in getting into it with them because they're just interested in arguing. They'll get nasty with most people (especially you if you were to try because you're a teenager... don't ask me how I know 🙄) and the fact that I do this for a living is the only thing that keeps them somewhat civil with me.

The thing is they're not wrong in that WSJ article, and I posted up there with my own thoughts, but that indicates a business strategy adjustment. It doesn't mean the company is going belly up.

Oh yes I’ve experienced that too. I’ve been called out a couple of times just because I’m a teenager?
