Back when you had to use a machine to "scan" (aka make a print copy) of the credit card numbers, right? My first legal job at age 16 was as a cashier at Kmart $3.35 per hour. I worked under the table jobs prior to age 16. I liked it and when someone used a credit card the transaction took longer. I had to look in a thick book of stolen credit card numbers and had to compare it to the customer credit card to see if the card was legit. I wore a K mart vest and a shirt and tie.
No machine scan of what you are referring to in the 1980s. Check the credit card # of the customer to the thick book of stolen cards by my assigned cash register.Back when you had to use a machine to "scan" (aka make a print copy) of the credit card numbers, right?
Cold front!! I woke up to 62 this morning. Very Fall-like.
My bad. Yes, K Mart had that scan machine when someone paid with a credit card, in addition to looking up in book to compare customer credit card to stolen credit card list which was updated on a regular basis.
Yup! And there was no list, you had to call to verify for purchases over $50. See an ID and get a signature.

So funny story, a few weeks ago, my mom showed me a Youtube video of one of those for some reason, not sure how we got on the topic, and that was when I learned that is why credit cards have the characters ridged on them. See, for as long as I've been alive, credit cards have pretty much been taken by computer; I have no memory of those things. So I had to admit that I always thought the characters on a credit card were ridged so blind people could identify them. Yeah, that was my millennial moment.
