Nobody can cross the USA without a VISA or permit lol.
I think very very few countries can enter with only the passport (which is technically stamped with a permit).
But most do need the VISA.
Unless you're a citizen of course ;)
My husband and kids have never needed anything other than their passports and the Esta, which is a visa waiver basically. If you are just going for tourism, you don't need a visa as long as your trip is under 90 days. I don't know if it's the same for most other countries, but we've always just filled in the Esta form and we're good to go. I can get in without that, of course, because I'm from the US.

Exactly, because you're from the US.

Check articles of "the most powerful passport" if you're curious, it tells the history of what countries are allowed what and which ones don.t.
