Without getting too political, we have a general shortage of accountants in this country, particularly ones with CPAs. And the vast majority of accountants are not going into the tax field. Simply put, that's not where the money is. Public accountants make way money doing the books for corporations and non profits. I'm an industry accountant, so I work for a coporation and close their books every month. My least favorite part...state sales tax. Total pain. There's also different types of accountants. You have ones who are certified fraud examiners, who go in and look for cases of financial fraud in a company. You have accountants who do nothing but audit. And yes, you do have tax accountants.Yes but your only one person out of millions of accountants
In school, we learn all of these nice, neat principles of accounting that all line up and they all make sense...and then tax is hanging out somewhere in left field. And the other thing that gets me...you have to take four accounting classes, and then they're like, "okay, time for tax." To learn how to do basic income tax returns, which pretty much everyone in the country should understand how to do.
So yes, I'm all in favor of simplifying the tax system. There's just simply not enough accounting staff, not to mention IRS staff, to handle the tax workload, and then the government would reduce their overhead, meaning they'd get more use for what they actually are bringing in.
