I would think you guys could afford your own generator. Just one less trip to Hawaii this year. Also unless you have a gas hot water heater, it would be a chilly shower anyway,:)🥶
This is highly unusual for us. We almost never lose power. When I was in high school, we had a hurricane come through and lost it for maybe an hour, and it was overnight. We had power, internet, etc. We were all camped out in the basement, and I got my college applications finished. And even with this, we're about the only ones who have power in the area. The farm behind me has no power, the shopping center aside from the grocery store has no power. That's why we've never bothered with getting a generator. I have a power converter for the cars, so anything that absolutely has to be used we can just go out to the cars for.

If this happens again though where I can see that it's going to be hours and hours until we get power, I'm at least going to the gym for a shower and probably will just hang out over that way. That shopping center loses power even less than we do. They always seem to have power in that corner. I drove over there to get dinner and it was bizzare. The center and the gas stations directly around it had power, but driving down the street there were some gas stations clearly not open that had no power, and there was a traffic light out here and there. It was a mess getting over there, but I made it.

A generator is a life saver for family up North. At times trees knocked down on power lines , power up for a few hours to a few days. Once the neighborhood in hot July , power was out for two weeks due to tornado knocking out power . A Generac whole house generator cost $12K and $300 annually for maint to service 2x a year. It’s also a good selling point when selling the house. I’ve known some whose homes have well water. Yes not only power goes out but no showers either.

Is there something wrong with me that I laughed at this?
Nope. It seems the idiocy always follows an specified pattern.
Which makes anyone sane to have a sad-fun type reaction of pure disbelief.

On the good side, the most idiotic fad things I've ever seen ( planking ) finally cooled down and never reappeared..
