I failed my driving test, which I think is actually a good thing. I really didn't feel ready to drive here by myself. The Dutch manner of driving is just too different and really stressful for me. So now I have more time to practice, and I really don't like my driving instructor. He makes me feel stupid when I drive like I would in the US and he shames me for that kind of stuff. He's really condescending. We called early on and asked if I could switch instructors, but they said they were too full and didn't have anyone with an opening because of corona. But I had already given them the authority to schedule a test for me, etc, so I couldn't switch schools. Now that the test is over, I can switch schools and try to find a better click, someone who doesn't make me feel nervous already as soon as I sit in the car.
Sorry about that. But hooray for a new instructor! I didn't like the guy, and I never even met him. Top shelf jerk.

Yes, I think the fact that I didn't feel ready is just more proof that he wasn't a good fit for me. His manner might work for some, but it isn't right for me. And the fact that he didn't give me the impression that he had confidence in me...on the contrary, he made me feel like he thought I was pretty hopeless, that's not a good sign in a teacher. A teacher needs to be motivating and encouraging and make you feel like you have the skills you need to do it on your own. I didn't feel that way. The guy giving me the test was so relaxed and so nice. And he was really nice about the way he told me I hadn't passed, and he basically said the exact same things that my teacher says, but he said it in a way that made it clear he knew I COULD do it, I just needed a bit more practice with it. Whereas my instructor says "Why did you do that? You shouldn't have done that." And he was CONSTANTLY giving me instructions even when I had already done what he told me to do....like, always saying "Take your foot off the gas. Take your foot off the gas." When I didn't HAVE my foot on the gas. Or I'm backing into a spot and he says "Start turning now" and EVERY. TIME. I ended up right in the middle between two spots. And he'd be like "Look in the mirror! Look in the mirror!" which was confusing, because I was already looking in the mirror, but he's saying it urgently like I wasn't already doing it. And when I asked him which mirror, because the only thing I could figure out was that I was looking in a different mirror than he thought I should be, his response was "Which mirror is important?" Today, in my exam, without his commentary, I got myself right in the one spot with no problem. So my instructor's manner just stresses me out soooo much and makes me feel really insecure, which is basically the commentary I got from the examinor....I drove like I was insecure. And he's absolutely right....I'm very insecure driving here. I don't feel comfortable with the rules here, and my instructor didn't really do much to help me get past that...he shamed me for driving the American way without teaching me how to do it differently. I need someone who can help me fix those insecurities, not make them worse.

70 something degrees outside today. Be productive or enjoy the weather? Umbrella drinky:angelic::angelic::angelic:
It is WIIIIIINDY here today. I had to ride my bike to the driving lesson/exam, and there were a few times where it was all I could do to move forward. I was biking straight into the wind. It literally blew me over when I got on and tried to bike...I didn't have momentum and the wind just blew me right over the other side.

We had that wind last night! It was just gusting. I was surprised the pup didn't blow away, when DH let her out. Today is calmer, and the sun has broken through the clouds. 57 for the high. Not as warm as it has been, but still warm for this time of year, here.

My recollection of the 10 years previous to my moving was that we had at least one major storm every March.

On the lighter side it was almost 80 degrees here yesterday and a beautiful clear sunny day. I went of another one of my "I'm bored to death" road trips. 140 mile circle this time. I went through a couple of small towns between Raleigh and I-95 (one was named Micro) that consisted of, at least 90% mobile homes and it appeared that there was a Baptist Church for every third building I went by. Small, poor but Religious. I don't have any problem with mobile home living. In fact that time after my divorce, I had purchased a mobile home and lived comfortably there for the 10 years previous to my move to NC. It was just so amazing to see mobile homes everywhere. Parks, along streets where one would usually see houses. Most were in very nice condition and not an eyesore, but surprising. I even had to take to the side of the road twice to let halves of double wide's being transported fit on the road. I think I stumbled upon the mobile home capital of the world. Considering this wasn't that far inland from the ocean I am amazed that some had been there for a long time regardless of hurricanes and major storms with tornado's. I did see one place with a mobile home that was at least 40 years old quietly standing right next to (no more than 20 feet away from two large trees that were obviously knock down by some storm activity.

Sorry about the travel log! My original intent was just to comment on March storms in New England and got carried away. There is a very good chance that only the first sentence applies to the quote.
Think I've seen the town of Micro on road signs of I-95. I myself am looking forward to my roadtrip to Florida in May. It won't be all the family, just youngest and myself and a mom and her daughter, but it will be fun. So looking forward to getting out of PA. We are thinking of a staycation or a beach trip now the end of May. May rent a house. Who knows. It all depends on, well, you know.

Awww shoot. That stinks. Well the instructor surely didn't give you the confidence you needed to pass. That was probably a big part of it.

I would like to do a real road trip before the end of this year as well. I hope you have a great time. I stated before that a lot of people hate I-95 but I associate a truck load of happy and fun memories with that road. Even though I was only on it for about 25 miles yesterday that old feeling came back as soon as I turn onto it. I guess there are some emotions that we never get to old to have. My first time on that road I was 35 and now at almost 73 I still get the same feeling of happy anticipation.

One of the most unexpected things on I-95 is that there are a surprising number to things that are the same and look the same as they did 38 years ago. I will spot something that will trigger a memory of that first trip and be transported back in time. Sometimes something as simple as a South of the Border billboard or a bridge over a swampy area or even an old falling down building along side the highway. Looking the same as it did 38 years ago.

And the South of the Border signs near the NC/SC line are still there. The tourist location at the border is only for the gullible.

I stopped there once in all the trips I made. Even after I moved to NC I still have to pass by it on my way to Florida. I stopped once because my kids needed to use a restroom. I was buying stuff as well (raw peanuts) but it didn't matter all three of my female travelers had to pay to use the bathroom. Never stopped again, but I do still get the thrill out of seeing the sombrero way up in the air. They can't charge me for this. I really don't understand what keeps that place in business, but I hope it stays at least for the remainder of my travel years. The new signs are not as clever as the old ones.
