Spam reminds me a little of corned beef. They're both kinda pressed meat (not sure what kind or kinds), and then they pack in some fat. Nope, it's just not for me. (As a kid, my mother tried it a few times, but we all hated it.) :cautious: (Yet, I understand if someone was poor and that was all they had, then of course, they'd eat it -- maybe even find a few creative ways to cook with it.) I'm not saying it's bad to eat, it just doesn't appeal to me.
I have never had corned beef that is a canned or pressed meat. I would never think of it in the same realm as spam. The old ham in a tin, though.

That isn't meat. I don't know what it is, but it isn't meat. 🤢
Spam is meat from the hind leg of the pig and pork shoulder goodness. In Hawaii, it is revered in restaurants, convenience stores and grocery stores which I saw on vacation. We've got some in our cabinets which is good fried up with scrambled eggs. Thanks to our US military to introducing and sharing Spam to the world!

Good morning everyone! Christmas break has started for me, well actually at 10:30 am yesterday. I worked four hours of inservice time yesterday which we could do at anytime yesterday so I went in super early to be done. Anyway, hubs and I are doing our normal Christmas Eve dinner today because he has a bunch of small services tomorrow. So I'm channeling my inner @figmentfan423 with some cooking and baking today. But tomorrow should be relaxing, well for me not for hubs. Today we are also supposed to get 3-4 inches of snow, so maybe @MinnieM123 wants to come over for dinner, we will let her shovel! :) ☃️

Happy break!

Seriously, can't believe I am saying this but...
We are supposed to hit mid 50's here today. When I let out the dog this morning, it is strangely warm, with the wind whipping. Christmas Eve and day, the bottom drops out. Temps in the teens with much colder wind chills. If we are all home, and it is too cold to be out, Christmas snow would be pretty. But, no snow in sight. Just dead lawns, and goose poop.

After New Year's, I have no need for snow.

The snow should be nice for Christmas and after that it can go away. Although, we do enjoy snow shoeing so I guess we do need snow for that! I saw your weather, the 50's sound good but we too will be having the cold. We won't be travelling down your way this year, the in-laws have cancelled the get together, which doesn't upset me too much but of course this year when we don't go the weather would be good for traveling.

HVAC guys came and gave me a price on several different brands picked one that has a fairly good rating and won't break the bank-- gives a military discount and our energy company has a rebate ---still $6819 (ouch) They'll install Monday supposed to be 70 on Thursday and then the temp drops, picked up 2 small electric heaters and with the fireplace we should be warm. We do have heat up stairs. As SNL Rosannadana would say "It's always something"

She has my number, and she knows she can call me anytime. I like your idea, but I don't think I have any pics of her mom. But, DS had to do an interview many years ago, of someone who emigrated to the US. She graciously agreed. She came to the US with her handsome soldier husband. She was his momento from England. The two of them together were too cute. He passed away I think close to 20 years ago. I should ask DS if he has that interview, still.
That's a great idea. There may be stories that she doesn't even know about. When my mom died, the funeral home provided little pieces of paper for everyone to write their favorite memories on. (Also a possible idea for you? Write down some of your favorite memories of her?) We also sent some with the memorial folder for people who couldn't make it to the service. Some of the anecdotes were hilarious. One of her childhood friends wrote that my mom had been teasing her about her last name. "Leek, leek, fell in a creek" or something like that, and my mom's name was Ruth, so the girl said "Ruthy-toot-toot SHUT UP!" and my mom got mad and punched her. And a friend from my home town remembered going camping for 4th of July, and she was really nervous because her mother-in-law was going to be joining us all, and they didn't get along. So my mom and another friend were listening to her and without her realizing it, they kept refilling her glass, so by the time her mother-in-law got there, the woman was so trashed she didn't care what her mother-in-law said about her. When my dad died, rather than using the little slips of paper, we just allowed anyone to stand up and share a memory. It was so nice to hear some of the things people said. Most of them were either about his love of ice cream (like him bringing ice cream to a 4th of July picnic and there was no way to keep it cold, so they had to eat it right away) or about him giving them something he decided they needed. There was one girl who had never even met him, but he recognized her as the fiance of a neighbor, so he bought her some sort of ranching equipment, in pink, and she was so confused because she didn't even know who he was yet. I really appreciated getting to know my parents through the eyes of others.

Perhaps you could initiate a sort of neighborhood thing where people could write their memories and you could assemble something that way, in lieu of pictures?

Inaccurate.

They were vaccinating people for it before then. Thomas Jefferson's daughters had it. He actually vaccinated some of his slaves in case they ran away to the British because the British were offering runaway slaves their freedom for serving on their army, but they had massive outbreaks of smallpox.

However, the vaccination involved cutting open their arms and using live virus, and then it caused a more mild case of the illness, so it too killed people.

Random knowledge.
