Out governor has recommended there be no school sports until January. He did say it is not a mandate and schools can do what they want. PIAA which runs the interscholastic is meeting on Friday. There is a rally today in Harrisburg to keep the sports for the kids. Private run youth sports are still continuing. If they (PIAA) cancel, then many kids will run to private clubs. The inner city and less financially able kids who use sports as a way to get ahead and stay out of trouble will be the ones hurt by this if they donā€™t play.

This is a big issue, and part of the reason for a protest/campaign against a public school district here. Virtual districts are not allowing sports until school is back in the classroom. High school parents and kids are fighting as hard as they can.

A good friend of mine, not one to ever post political comments on FB, or even in general, is now taking a leadership role in organizing and fighting.

One of the points of their platform is the lower income kids, they canā€™t switch to club, they canā€™t have private trainers, they will fall behind and potentially lose much needed scholarships... in addition to losing the healthy outlet in home situations that may not be good for them.
The fight is for all kids, they need their teammates and coaches and hard earned spots on the team.

The rest of the league is playing, but one specific school district decided to go virtual at the last minute, canceling all sports in the process. Itā€™s just so sad, and right now, the district doesnā€™t appear to be caving, even a little bit.

We are in a big soccer tournament next weekend. Itā€™s the first soccer event in Ohio. All eyes will be on us and how we act.. we have a long list of rules.

Mask checkers will be walking around.
Players and parents sit on same side of the field, opposing team players and parents on the other. Maximum of 2 spectators per player.
Spectators must be socially distanced.
No awards ceremony.
No trophies. (Iā€™m not telling T about either of these)
No team benches or umbrellas. Players must sit in the ground 6 ft apart, with a mask on, when not on the pitch.
Coaches and refs will wear masks. (Not quite sure how you blow a whistle or team hears you with a mask)
Sanitizing stations all around.
Restrooms with running water for hand washing.

My parents are so sad that they canā€™t attend, as Iā€™m sure many grandparents are. This is going to be a very different type of tourney.. but at least they can play. If it goes well, and everyone obeys the rules, then I think good things will be written and said by the press around Ohio.

I do think itā€™s pretty neat that Cincinnati had the first baseball event when restrictions were lifted, now weā€™re having the first soccer event. Fingers crossed thereā€™s not media looking for that ā€œLook at a rule breaker!ā€ drama shot, trying to show that itā€™s a failure.
