As of Monday our school district K-8 has had a dramatic impact filing for both retirement and one year leave. We could have more first year teachers then 4 year tenure. Teachers are not buying into the safety of 5 days a week within a small square footage for 25 students everyday plus a teacher and an aide.

So happy I am not on this board any longer and I pray for the board. Last week they let the parents choose in school education or cyber learning. Today if the students are not in building Federal funds would be pulled by administration. Bankrupt a school district or force students, staff and their families into questionable health risks?

I made some questionable decisions I wish I had take backs on. I made some excellent decisions on behalf of students excelling. I cannot imagine the weight of choosing between the health and well being of students, staff and all of their families over the threat of Feds defunding local state schools. Makes me want to cry.
It's scary, for sure. A lot of my friends are opting to homeschool their kids rather than have them forced into an environment that is possibly unsafe. I agree that parents and kids are ready for things to go back to normal, but most don't want to do it if it can't be done safely. I think the whole WORLD wants to get back to some normalcy. I would LOVE to go on vacation this Summer. But only if we could go safely. If I could, I'd grab my daughter and do a mother daughter trip to Disneyworld, but there is no way I'd go to Florida right now with cases spiking and no end in sight, and having to wear masks in the heat of the summer. There's just no way, as much as I WANT it to be possible. I wonder how many parents are going to have issues with this. It's ultimately up to the parents whether they send their kids back to school or homeschool themselves.

Same with my family, but in a metropolitan area of the Northeast, where we grew up. (Although I don't recall hearing the expression you referenced about the heart, though.)

One of my brothers had kids, and they always addressed adults by their first name. I recall the first time I heard that, I was surprised, as that's not how we were raised. I suppose the social rules may have relaxed over time, but it still seemed a little unusual. I think part of my hesitation was due to the fact that addressing someone as Mr. or sir, for example, sets up an (invisible) barrier of respect -- in the sense that a child doesn't need to assume that an adult is one of the kids. Addressing someone by first name (to me) indicates more of a familiar relationship. That said, my brother's kids certainly meant no harm at all in how they addressed adults, and were always good kids.
I think that's a cultural thing, too. I've read a few books set in Africa, and in a lot of those countries, kids apparently call all adults "mother" or "uncle" etc. even if they aren't related. We always addressed adults by their first names if they were friends of the family, but by Mr. or Mrs. if they were aquaintences. If you didn't know their name, it was Sir or ma'am. But then that wasn't just for kids...that was everyone.

@figmentfan423 is having trouble accessing here atm. Hopefully it is just an e-mail issue and she will be back soon.
Please feel free to tag her as much as possible so she knows how much we missed her 😁
It took me a moment to get what "atm" was. I thought you were saying she was having trouble accessing her bank account with the atm. (spent all her money at the farmers market?) Now I get it...."at the moment". But it won't let me tag her. It's like she doesn't exist. I'm sure she would be saying "CAGE!" if she were here, though.

Yah, I can't pull up her forum name here at the moment. Maybe she came to her senses, and ditched this place? :p

C'mon Figgy -- stop messing around and get back here!

More Disney related live streams today. Should prove to be interesting. Before it was cast members, family and friends but now it's AP holders. Though when it opens to everyone, that's were the fun begins.

Chicago is in the middle of a heat wave. This old body doesn't like it much. My grass needs mowing bad, but I can't blame my son for not getting out there. He has become the #1 gardener in our house. He still hasn't had his hip surgery. Last time they delayed him because they discovered more health issues. He is hyperthyroid, and now on medicine for that. Next surgery time set for August the 8th. Please, oh please let it finally get done. The man is so stressed out waiting, and I can't blame him.
