I’m debating joining the YMCA. Did a one week free pass to see if we’ll really utilize it.
So, we went tonight before basketball practice. Talked to the front desk about what T can do. Unfortunately, age 9 is the first year where they’re aged out of the daycare, but too young for a bracelet to have free reign. :(

He said he’s ok with that and just wants to work out in the gym with me, and swim, and play basketball. Also unfortunately, the majority of open swim and open basketball court time slots are not conducive to our schedule at all. He says he’s ok with that too.
We worked out for an hour together, elliptical, pull up bar, stretch bars, and ran on a treadmill. While on the elliptical he says “This is awesome, mom. I can feel myself getting stronger. This is going to get me some serious fit bod and I’m going to be such a threat on the pitch.” 😂🤦‍♀️

I don’t know though.., to join a YMCA, when we’ll mostly be using it as a gym, doesn’t sound like a great idea to me. Main reason is because he has to be on whatever equipment I am on, which means I can’t do any of the weight machines.

What would you do? Anyone have a Y membership?

Don't have a Y membership. Thought about it and it would be easier. It's like a two minute walk from me but a total waste of money for me. The money laundering gym (so maybe that's an exaggeration) wanted $50 bucks a month. Granted they had an Olympic size pool but they had an itty bitty gym.

Valentines' Day: half price (shush!) tickets to the Yacht Rock concert at a local theater, plus club level upgrade (hors d'ouvres & unlimited beer/wine/cawfee/tea/soda. Mixed drinks supposedly discounted, I'll stick with the wine.) Seeing Ambrosia, Stephen Bishop, John Ford Coley (of England Dan & John Ford Coley) and the lead singer from Player. It's 70's mellow rock heaven!

Ambrosia ... "How much I feel" :inlove: :inlove:

What a wonderful night you both have planned. ENJOY!!!

The only reason I’m still considering it is because of the following-
pool in the summer (but we can literally be at King’s Island Soak City turnstiles in 10 minutes, so not huge advantage) , and because Tristan really wants to go to a gym, he’s not old enough to go to a Planet Fitness, and I’m not about to join a ANW-type gym. It would be awesome to work out together sometimes, but he wouldn’t go as often as I would anyway.. and that’s an expensive gym membership.

Thanks for weighing in! I think your opinion will also be mine in the end. I’ll see what else we do in the next 6 days and then come up with my final decision.

My initial thought was that it might not be the best use of your money. But then again, you could always try it for a year and see how it goes. And as the summer is coming in a few months, I'm sure that your local Y (as do all of them across the country) will also have more kid-centered activities. So there's that as well.

Those thoughts aside, I also realize you have a number of other options already, so there's really no exact right or wrong decision to make.

Yah, the Y's vary in size depending upon location. The one in my area is large, BUT, it also charges too much money. It was a "no" for me. (More expensive than yours is. In-city location, they always jack up the costs higher.)

Have you considered creating a home gym? I found a bunch of stuff on Facebook Marketplace for a very reasonable price. Then you could do all the exercises you wanted to (including weights), you could fit it into your own schedule, and T could take on more as he ages.

Same here.

I don’t have a sophisticated home gym, but I do have an area in the basement containing a rack with all different hand weights, same with medicine balls, a balance ball, stability ball, resistance bands, a decent beach body video collection, and T’s agility ladder.

I’ve just fallen off the wagon and am not good at consistently working out at home. I thought the Y would force me to do it, and allow for swimming in the winter, while T could also swim or play basketball.

I’m really surprised at the lack of “open gym/open pool” time.

Separately, and more importantly than the Y, here’s my weekly episode of
@21stamps Sports Drama

My kid has decided that he must join the track team.
He loves doing hurdles and is constantly stacking throw pillows, boxes, whatever he can find to run and jump over. He also likes to run.. all good. However, I said “No” to volleyball this year because last Spring was just too hectic with 3 sports, too many conflicts with practice, too many games on weekends. He complained at first but accepted it...

... but he won’t let this track thing go. He’s begging, literally. Again this morning before school. Trying to sell me on all of the reasons why it will be so great and how we won’t be too busy. 🙄

I’m conflicted on this one. I just emailed the coach and asked when meets typically take place, and if other kids are in multiple sports. I’m not signing up for something with constant conflicts again. Why does spring contain almost every one of the sports that my kid wants to play??? 🤦‍♀️
