Seems like I remember an episode of This Old House recently where the rebuild of the house was on it's original footprint, but they wanted solar and the house was facing the wrong direction. What they did was build an external "shed", useful for other things but could be built to take advantage of solar panels, direction wise. It was incorporated in the design and ended up practically seamless. Looked a little like a detached garage or workshop.

Their front yard is gracious, but, the rear yard not so much. As a result, the neighborhood “Yard of the Month” sign was in our front yard so many times I can’t even remember...again, both folks raised on Texas farms...!!!!! :hilarious:
Also, definitely possible, but, at this point, something to be addressed by future generations...!!! ;)

Just the other day when the temp. spiked up for a day, (but still almost no snow at all around), I was thinking it felt more like late March, than early February.
I know that feeling in the area I live in. It has been strange weather wise since late October. To me though, October and a part of November had snow and also was more cold than usually. Since than though, the weather has unusually mild. At times, there has been no snow. I know there was supposed to snow a couple nights ago, but it never came. At least there is suppose snow tomorrow while I'll be watching Nascar's Exhibition race on tv. Snow will be shoveled once the snow ends and I think the race is suppose to end before the snow does.

Solar panels have yet to enter the rebuild discussion. We definitely have enough sunlight throughout the year to support the solar power option. Moms first priority is to have the house rebuilt as close as is possible to how it was, and that is also our priority. It is her domain, and pop made sure it was so for all these years. They are still incredible together after almost 60 years of marriage...!!!!!
My siblings have given me a wide berth in regard to the rebirth of the design and rebuild of that precious home...since, well...it’s kinda’ what I do to pay the bills...!!! ;)
Also, in that case, effective solar panels would only be able to be installed on the 2 gable roofs to the front of the house, facing mostly to the southwest, with the sun crossing those roof planes east to west as the sun rises, blazes during the day, and sets.
From what I know of even modern solar panels, most are conducive to only more modern architecture. Also, being that mom and pop are 80 and 87 years old, solar power is one of the last things on their minds, based on the time they keep saying they, statistically (and yes, I know ;)) have left on Gods great earth...!!!!! :hilarious:
Plus, solar panels on those roofs would look atrocious, IMO...whoever owns the house in the future may have a different opinion (in that regard, my mother has said more than once that she wants our oldest DD to have the house when they are gone)...!!! ;)

As far as the asbestos remediation goes, it was only in the mud used to float the sheetrock/drywall, and not in the popcorn ceiling, but, apparently, is still enough for raising it to the slab/foundation.

The asbestos remediation was estimated by the insurance adjuster to be about 50K, but, the head of the remediation team said it would be more like 27K. Hmmmmmmm...interesting **** there.

Anyway...
As always, I thank you and all here for your support and input, as it is always welcomed and appreciated...!!!!!

What a great explanation of the solar panel option. It's good that you are in the design/building business and know so much more about various options.

I just wanted to chime in that I've heard various reviews of the panels (up here in my area, that is). There are some installers who don't have a clue what they're doing up on people's roofs, and there have been many complaints. Also, one has to be very careful which company they choose (I wouldn't have a clue which ones are better). Some people have been ripped off. Again, you're in the business and wouldn't have these concerns, but just a heads up for others.

Agree with your parents, especially at their age -- getting the house built as quickly as possible is the priority. They're so lucky to have family members who know various aspects of the business (including insurance, etc.)

I know you said they want it as close to the old house as possible, but once they begin the process, do you think they will change their minds and start saying, "well I've always wanted this" or that? I know if I had to start over, there are so many changes I would make!

This morning I was the vocal soloist in the choir song at the 8:30am Church Service. I showed up at 8:15am...pleased with myself that I made it there plenty early. So I tapped my shirt pocket and realized I left my reading glasses home😒.....oh well, no problem....I'll just grab my spare "readers" that I keep in my car for moments like this...uh....nope...I had used THOSE yesterday....and they are in my winter coat pocket at home. This morning I wore my sport jacket that matches the tie I selected😂

Luckily, the church had a pair of reading glasses in our lost and found box! All went well. I came home to grab the wife 'cause I will sing again at 11am. My glasses are on the left...the lost and found glasses that I will return are on the right.20200209_100721.jpg

Just make sure he’s aware of...

And, although I’m not a young man anymore...
Barton Springs, Zilker Park, Rainey Street (when he’s of age), the Iron Works bbq, Franklin Barbeque, The Oasis on Lake Travis, and the list goes on endlessly...!!!!!!! :joyfull::hilarious:;):)
Oh, he knows. Kid loves NOLA, so I think it is safe to say he is ok with weird. He is of age, but traveling with Dad. BBQ is absolutely on the list.
